I've had many people try to explain Compression and how to use them and just didn't quite get it. Sort of a high level of understanding but the nitty gritty wasn't getting into my head. Since Makeup Gain is relative (i.e. + or - dB) rather than targeted (like Normalize), the most direct comparison is "Amplify". In terms of "does it matter which one you use?" - the result would be the same. It's just a Gain adjustment. In fact, with the AU Dynamics Processor, it's a little too easy to forget about it, so i tend to just add the step separately in a Twisted Wave Stack.
The mics visible in the booth are the Mojave MA201 FET in the foreground and a Sennheiser MKH416 behind it. The actual recording had the MHK416 active as the input mic.
