A Close Look At Mid EQ Bands For Voice Over Processing

- I take a closer look at the mid-range EQ adjustments while walking through a custom voice-over processing chain. I received a voice-over submission from a voice-over talent using a Sennheiser MKH 416 microphone. It was recorded on a Focusrite 2i2 and captured with Apple’s Logic Pro software. The custom channel strip I created is comprised of Softube’s Saturation Knob, Logic Pro’s Channel EQ, Waves’ Scheps Omni Channel, and Logic Pro’s (DBX Modeled) Compressor. In this video, I describe the specific things that I’m listening for in the mid-range section while applying EQ. One of the two EQs is used for correcting overabundant frequencies, and another EQ is used to sweeten the pleasing parts of the voice.

Wow, no joke, all your videos have the cleanest vocals coming out! Is there a video on what vocal chain you use to record your vocals for this channel? I know you said every voice is different and will require different EQ and Compression but Im very curious to know what you're doing because this is by far the cleanest sound. I guess its also important to ask what Mic, Pre-Amp and Interface you're using too? lol... Im excited!
Hey Morsy, I appreciate the compliment. Currently, I use a Neumann TLM 103 with my Apollo interface by Universal Audio. In some of my earlier videos, I used my TLM 103 with a Focusrite Clarett 8PreX. However, most of the "sound" that you hear is due to processing. Normally, I'm processing my voice with the Fabfilter ProQ-3 parametric EQ and the Scheps Omni Channel plugin by Waves. Sometimes I use other configurations depending on what I'm feeling that day. The truth is that a good sound is possible with a lot of different EQ and Compression plugins. It's more about "know-how" than it is the equipment. Also, your sound BEGINS in the room. Meaning that if your room isn't acoustically treated, you're behind before you begin. Room treatment is the single most important thing that will help you get a good sound. Hope that helps!
I would love to EQ my voice like this, unfortunately I have tinnitus and partial hearing loss so I can’t “hear” some of the frequencies
Hi Lenny, I mainly use the Sennheiser MKH 416 (and also a TLM 103, TLM 170 and Shure SM 7 without B) with a dbx 286s. From there it goes into a Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 3rd Gen. My DAW is Reaper.
If I send you a demo of my voice via your website: how should I record it? Leave the preamp on the dbx 286 and bypass the rest? All on? Nothing on?

I do need a completely naked audio file, meaning no processing at all. I would ask that you completely remove the DBX286s from your chain. I need to hear the naked file so I can diagnose any deficiencies. Then we'll take it from there. Cool?

I do have a question (or two): Do you ever use iZotope products/plugins? If you do, can you get similar results compared to your chain of Softube, your channel eq, Omni Channel, etc.?
Hi Johnny. Thanks for the kind words and for watching. I've been tempted many times to purchase iZotope plugins. I've found that to me, iZotope is designed for the person who doesn't want to get too deep in to the mechanics of the processing. iZotope tends to deliver a quick fix with automated processes that do the detailed work for you... in my opinion. The truth is, if you know what you're doing behind the scenes and understand EQ and compression, you can get a great sound with the stock plugins that come with your DAW. What software are you using to record? What iZotope plugins do you have? Thanks
@@HeyLennyB Hello. I have several iZotope plugins/products: RX8 Standard (which I love), Ozone 9 Advanced, Neuron 3 Advanced, and Nectar 3 Plus (among some other odds and ends from iZotope). I admit that I purchased them with the automated processes in mind, but I'm never satisfied with any of the results (even as a starting point). That said, I've found that RX8 is awesome for editing, and it can incorporate all the other iZotope plugins within it's processes. So, in a nutshell, I've been trying to get a good sound for my voice using iZotope because... well... I bought it. Haha
I should mention that I also have some Waves plugins, like the Scheps Omni channel, some SSL channel strips, CLA compressors, etc.. Also, I use Reaper with an Audient iD22 as the interface.
I'm a musician/singer/entertainer, and have had a fairly awesome career doing it for the past 30 years (crap, I'm getting old). COVID put everything on hold, though, so I decided to dabble a bit with voice over since home was about the only place I could be. Hence, while I understand how it all works (sort of), I've found that recording is completely different than live sound. So, I just may submit a voice clip for you to do your magic with. Again, your videos are great!

Hey @D.bunker, I suggest a retake. There are some plugins that offer removal of these types of sound like clicks and mouth smacks, but it they all degrade the overall quality when applied. I always prefer re-recording footage with those types of unwanted sounds.

Hi V Mtz, Unfortunately, Audacity doesn't support plugins. I wish it did because so many people use Audacity for voice-overs. The software has some effects that can improve a voice sound, but they are quite limited.
