I think people underestimate how great your ears are. You cannot recreate songs with this much accuracy without being able to hear the intricacies of the original performances. As a music teacher, I am often more impressed with being able to hear what makes a performance sound the way it does. On top of that you can actually execute it to boot.. amazing job man, truly. Thanks for giving me so much to listen to.. over and over again.
DeKraut the most accurate description of how truly amazing Masse reproduces the intricacies that very few can master. Thank you. I’ve received tremendous enjoyment out of Masse’s covers- which the original artists could likely not reproduce without technological assistance.
It’s uncanny how you can recreate the original artists’ nuances while also adding your own impression at the same time

My husband & I think you're fantastic! When a person covers an original song, I think for the most part, people want to hear how close you can replicate the original - you do that - so well! You also however, put your own individuality into all your songs too & we always look forward to see what song you're going to do in your next video! You are very talented!

Idol ended up recording it years later as filler on a Greatest Hits compilation or something like that. He did it well, but Jim Kerr and the 80s synth sounds of Simple Minds with Mel Gaynor rocking the drums owned it.
Mike always nails his covers. No Billy Idol implications or parallels intended.

Mike, I know you're tired of the Louis CK jokes but my girlfriend actually thought you were him.
I'm usually cautious to listen to cover songs, mostly because they are done in a less than stellar way and detract from the quality of the original song. Here, however, we have and example of the opposite. Boy does Mike nail these song every time. Keep on, keep on. I love it.

To the 74 jerk-offs who gave a thumbs down: what is your freaking problem? Is it the song you do not like? Personally, I’m not crazy about the song either. I was tired of it in the 80s. But you cannot deny the snazzy of this version. One guy and an acoustic guitar did a whole lot better than all 74 of you put together ever could. Every nuance. Every breath taken. Captured the mood and atmosphere of that song and made it even more spiritual. Somehow.. I have recently been paying close attention to Mike’s videos here on UA-cam. Years ago I was exposed to the Africa cover like everyone else but I put it aside for way too long, and only recently with Weezer’s version being so popular I stumbled back in to this page only to discover all these amazing covers that just leave me speechless every time I hear them. I don’t know how he gets them all so perfect. I don’t know how he remembers all the cords and all the lyrics so well. I like to consider myself a person who pays attention to those types of details, but I can’t even remember all the songs I actually like near as well as he does.

This is my suggestion. We request Mr. Masse for a concert date, and then setup everything through a crowd (fan) funding campaign. We all congregate at the selected venue and feel blessed that we got to hear Mr. Masse in person in our lifetime.

My wife and I traveled from Minneapolis to Evergreen to see Mike at the Little Bear. It was AWESOME. Mike's a gracious guy and hearing a good chunk of the UA-cam video songs in person was beyond a treat. If you can make it to the Little Bear do it. You won't be disappointed. Great cover of a great song here....as always.

I love this song. I LOVE Mike's version (I won't say "cover"). I don't care for Simple Minds' version. Simply put, it sounds like it was performed by five guys who didn't want to be there that day.
"Don't You" needs to be played with PASSION. Angst. Interest. Intensity.

It's a shame Jim Kerr was too young and immature to realize what he had in his hands when he walked into a recording studio in 1985.

Amazing musician here ! Mike can you please let us know the chords when you go down past the fifth fret? Beyond that little riff the E D A G chords are clear. Thanks so much.
Assuming I in fact play the correct chords, it's an E to a D. It's just an E in first inversion (so the G# is on top), leading to a D in root position (at least on keyboards). So the chords are descending when you think in terms of roots, but that G# to A you hear on top, makes it sound like the chords are going "up" in some way. I play the E on the top three strings (in terms of pitch), at the 4th fret, in the same position as a normal "D" chord, but just a whole-step higher. Then I play a D chord on those same top strings, leaving the 4th (and 5th) strings open. I play 5th fret 1st string, 7th fret for 2nd and 3rd strings). Listening back to a little of this recording, I could tell it was right before I got the nut replaced on my guitar--the intonation was at a bit of a low point. It's better now. :)
