    2018 Honda Civic Type R Static Review: ua-cam.com/video/aS0KSPOq_VQ/v-deo.html

    I own a Type R and honestly, you have to appreciate both cars if you are a real enthusiast. I was looking at both of em, but here in Germany the Focus RS is significantly more expensive and there was no good reasoning for me to get the RS. I also like the manufacturing quality of the Type R a bit more. The seats feel better, the shifter is probably the best out there and well... it's got VTEC xD
    But really, it does not matter which one you buy, both cars are absolutely great and you won't make a mistake by buying eithr of them.

    Hi guys and girls. A few people have been asking about interior comparisons, of which there isn't one in the video. The original edit of this video did have one but it was cut due to the video being too long. However, we still have that footage so if enough people want it and like this, then I can publish another video with all of the interiors.
    Sorry about it not being there, we just felt it killed the pace a bit and made it too long to justify. Let us know what you want...
    UPDATE: Here it is: ua-cam.com/video/rWDBBr8-4_s/v-deo.html

      Yes! Pls compare interiors too. From what ive seen and heard ford interiors have very plastic/ cheap kinda feel on their dash and door panels. idk bout the new civics, but my dc2 (gen3) has nicer interior than lots of these newer cars that are nothing but plastic.

    I absolutely hate Ford's, but this Focus is a truly amazing car. It is making me take a hard look at Ford today. The choice for me is the Focus due to performance and the fact that a grown man can own it without looking like I am having a mid life crisis. What a car, cheaper and faster than all the competition. I am thinking of getting one.

    I can't get over the busy all over the place styling of the Civic Type R. It's too boy racer and if anything, makes you wish Honda would have at least take cues from their previous RSX - a gorgeous car.

    I like this guys unbiased review. He really puts thought into his commentary, one parallel that i thought was really something is another channel made a review comparing the Subaru WRX and the Ford Focus ST, the difference were nearly exactly the same. I think it really comes down to who you are, in choosing between these two.

      +Romo Maloul I've owned the WRX and ST and am really intrigued with the new Type R because I've owned a few Hondas/Acuras over the years and it's a struggle to come up with negative things to say about Hondas/Acuras (except for the fact that the Fit I owned was way underpowered to the point it could have gotten better MPG's with a bigger motor) from a daily driver perspective. *shrugs*

    I plan on buying the type R when it hits the states. I could have pulled the trigger on the RS but I need a car thats more fun to drive. Going around a track slightly faster does not mean its more fun. The civic type R is lighter and therefore more responsive and nimble. Also, the shifter and the seating position is far superior than in the RS which again, brings me back to the importance of driver engagement. The RS seats make you sit high up and ontop of the car. Lastly and not mentioned in this video, Honda is far superior in reliability and holding its value than Ford. I guarantee that RS will give drivers more headaches than they can afford.. especially when they mod.

    I'm sure the Civic is a wonderful car to drive, but I just can't get away from the fact it looks like it was styled by someone who's weekend job is animating low budget Saturday morning cartoons. The original Type R was a very clean, simple, good looking car. This one is just trying way too hard.

  • @jasonsadler361
    @jasonsadler361 8 років тому +5

    I traded in my 2011 WRX hatch for a 2014 Focus ST. In some ways I regret it, but in some ways I do not. With that FWD vs AWD bit I do miss the AWD in the wet and snow, but the ST feels much more poised and fun and maybe even just a bit quicker on the highways. With the RS I'd imagine it would combine the best of both worlds with regards to traction and handling, BUT I will say my ST feels chintzy -- not that my WRX didn't feel chintzy with its A/C going out at like 60k miles and annoying rattles, but the Focus I have feels neglected in other aspects of build quality such as the dash, floor mats and generally fit-and-finish inside and out. I'm on the fence with trying to find an older STi hatch or a new RS. Perhaps I'm one of those guys that looks at the Civic Type R as the car that might actually suit my preferences the best -- I've been a Honda owner for a decade or so and have never been disappointed, at least not quite like I've been disappointed with the Subaru or Ford.

    My first encounter with the Focus was mid 2000. Did not care for how it look. They had the recalls for the wheels falling off, the stereo would turn itself back on after turning the car off (it was an actual feature to be used, but not by itself. It was meant for the driver to turn on) and then the turn signal switch started going bonkers. Left and right would come on at random, sometimes both at the same time.
    That said, seeing the RS and what the Focus has become, particularly in the hatchback area is astounding. I never would have thought Ford would do an all-wheel drive setup, let alone make it into some kind of all weather, and even a track car.
    I've been in some kind of Honda since 2010. I grew up as someone who loved American cars, particularly muscle cars. Almost bought a Camaro in 2011. In some regards, I wish I had. I now have a 92 Civic and love it, though it's hard parked. With the right mods and drive train, it'll be a killer car. Seeing and hearing about the Type-R, on top of it coming to the US, has really peaked my interest in it. Unfortunately, I won't have the money to buy it.
    Love the comparison between the two. Just got introduced to this channel the other day. Will be watching more as the days go by. :)

    I'm not sure why anyone is impressed with a 300hp FWD car since we've had that or similar in basic sedans for over 10 years. The Maxima, Impala, Azera, Cadenza, Lacrosse all have or have had between 270 and 300+ hp and put the power down fine without being high performance cars. Back on topic, I agree that AWD RS would be more useful in most situations, the Type R will be a very niche market car that can't use its power most of the time.

    • @Toastmaster_5000
      @Toastmaster_5000 8 років тому +2

      +iSOBigD ...do you seriously not understand why 300HP for a Type R is good? Every one of those cars you mentioned is at least 500lbs heavier and is geared completely differently. They aren't considered high performance because they're clumsy at high speeds. All of this should be pretty obvious, and that being said, 300HP for a 3000lbs car is not bad.

    • @iSOBigD
      @iSOBigD 8 років тому

      Peter Schmidt 1000hp for a 3000lb car would be not bad either, my point is that you can put tons of HP on a FWD car without any issue, there's nothing amazing about it and it's a common thing. Also, something like a 6th gen maxima was 3500lb while being a giant full size car, so 3000lb is only light by today's standards because cars got way heavier. The issue is people seem to think only RWD and AWD cars can have over 200hp.

    • @raulespinoza8668
      @raulespinoza8668 8 років тому

      +Peter Schmidt A FWD drive car will never fully put it's power down properly, theres a reason it's 0-60 times is a Second slower

    • @iSOBigD
      @iSOBigD 8 років тому

      +Raul Espinoza that's not true at all. there are modified fwd civics which beat a veyron in a straight line. it's just a matter of power, weight and grip (they use much wider front wheels). The limitation for fwd cars is that the wheels also need to turn so you can't use 15 inch wide wheels in the front for example. Rwd cars with high hp simply use wider wheels and tires to put the power down. With 7" wheels and no traction control any rwd car with 200hp+ will spin in place if you floor it as well. Nissan also had a track only racecar btw which was fwd and it had no problem keeping up.

      Inside Lane the R looks better, sounds better, has more theater... if you're going out too buy the track focused cars you're going to want something that excites you more.
      its the NSX / GTR problem, people who want to go out and buy super cars want to be thrilled and excited like no other super car / sports car can do... but yet they are so numb, un-engaging, and boring for the sake of being easier to drive and to live with... most people already own a 2nd car for that duty of the DD. and if you're looking at these rather expensive hit hatches im sure either 1 you own a DD or 2 you would go with something more DD friendly.

      +Mcufre Likely for the same reason we haven't. RS is so new at the moment, Ford are only just starting to give them to journalists to take home, it means there is a restriction with what you can do with them. For example, Ford organised the use of Silverstone for the RS but we couldn't take the Type R on track because it was a Ford event.

  • @ianjames3078

    Good effort and a thumbs up from me. When I see a comparison I'd really expect them to be driven together over the same roads though. I know you've driven them within a few days of each other but they really need to be driven together in my opinion. Also feel the interior comparison is a key part of a head to head and shouldn't be cut out.
    Having ordered an RS I can see how the Type R could give better feedback to a good driver in perfect conditions. I'm probably not good enough to get the best out of the Honda though and I feel the torque vectoring of the RS is a better benefit to me on normal roads. Pretty much what you say! Well done.

    • @insidelane
      @insidelane  8 років тому +1

      +Ian James Both cars were driven on the same day back to back, but logistically it was impossible on that day to get them together at the exact same time. I have driven both is similar conditions and so the summary is my ultimate judgement of the pair. I am writing an article to accompany this which will have a few more details.
      Sorry about the interiors being cut out. The video was over 13 minutes with them in and we like to keep our lengths down to around 8 mins. If enough people want interior comparisons we still have the footage and could do a video on it.

    More value for the money is the RS? lol Just own both a few years later then the truth of value shows up. The Honda is much more reliable, more economical to own and able to keep its resale value higher and less down times due to car problems. As for the Ford owners you will be sending your favorite mechanic's kids to University at your expense.

    • @monkeynutz6575
      @monkeynutz6575 8 років тому +4

      +Lok Tom Not sure if you was looking to buy an RS or Type R that reliability would be your biggest concern. Have you seen the price of an Escort/Sierra Cosworth these days? Or even a 7 year old RS would set you back £20k. Normal depreciation rules don't apply to these cars, if you bought a second hand 2016 RS now it would cost more than a new one!. Additionally a new car would have a warranty so no worries about any major repairs etc, apart from the cost of new rubber, but that is an expense I can live with :)

    • @loktom4068
      @loktom4068 8 років тому

      +Thomas Brown Well, when a 2016 used RS is back on the market so soon, it only means the previous owner experience is not a pleasant one. But he has done the right decision. Sell it quick & high $$$$$ while the market demands is hot and trade for something nicer. It's not a keeper.

    • @Vlican
      @Vlican 8 років тому +3

      +Lok Tom how do you know it's more reliable? it's a new car with new engine. there's no history to back up your claims other than typical John Doe thinking "honduhs are moar reliable".

      +Vlican Between the 2 Honda is more reliable. Just check out the history of their products from the past 5 years or older. Ford can't even built a regular no thrill and no performance grocery getter reliable. We can argue all day about it. Finally is still your decision to feel the experience. I have experienced with both companies before the comment.

    • @loktom4068
      @loktom4068 8 років тому

      +Thomas Brown Most people sees top performance is in their top ownership priority. Bragging Right. Unless you trade in very frequently. But as for a "keeper" it is a complete different situation. It means how much down times during repairs ( even wt warranty claims ) and does it hurt you financially in the long run ? Not to mention the embarrassing of waiting for the bus during repairs. Better get some nice dark sun glasses to wait for the bus if you gonna own a Ford., cause you don't want your friends and neighbors sees you there.

    Meh id take the type R for the fact of If you drive a car every day you know how it will act and the fact that you get more response from it that makes it more of a drivers car. Focus rs is nice but still Type R proves its king with Times and the fact that they made race cars from them. alternatively ford is planing on rallying the rs so a better comparison would be a wrx sti and a rs they are in the same group of people

      You are saying type r is a better track car, in your opinion of course. Did you time them or try to get an idea about which might have been fastest? I'm more interested in which one is fastest. Type r has such a slow zero to 60 time that I can't imagine it being faster than the RS.

      @insidelane  8 років тому

      +gentlemonsterkennels What you have to remember is that AWD help greatly with launch, hence the RS' amazing 0-62 time, but it does come with a weight penalty. Whilst the RS is faster off of the line, and on slow corner exit, Type R is better on turn-in breaking, and body control through fast corners. On a wet track I think the RS can really take an advantage, but in the dry on a technical circuit I think the Type R has a chance.

      +Caleb Youngs The type r WILL be coming to the US, but it will not be this design. The US design will be based off of the current gen civic model.

      Activ8Music So then, it will be the same motor, same turbo and all that? Just different chassis?

      Presumably, yes. But nothing has been officially announced, so we don't really know what the specs will be. The only thing that is confirmed is that the US is in fact getting the type r.

    Perfect characterization of these two cars' souls.

    front wheel drive vs all wheel drive...the civic never had a chance stock vs stock! Both are sweet rides. I'd own either.

    Wouldn't the better comparison be Focus ST vs Civic Type R?

      @insidelane  8 років тому +1

      +Gimmi J They don't compete directly. If you were to compare lap times and what technology each car employs, the Type R in akin to RS, the Cupra. Being FWD is just a formality in this case. Different means to the same ends.

    the fact a factory car under 3 liter making 300 hp is just stunning when you consider these are daily drivers

    I'd take the Type R. I'm not incredibly knowledgable on them, but my heart was stolen by the 2010 R, so I'd probably go for that instead.

    great video but I think Ford aimed the RS more at the WRX than they did at the type R just my opinion but keep up the outstanding videos thank you

    video put it nicely, both are awesome cars and really depends on your taste. id personally go with the civic due to the fact there are so many focus Rs bombing around my area and would prefer something a bit different

    The Civic that lapped the ring was fitted with a roll cage, i challenge them to push the stock car as hard without that extra protection :) Without specialist safety gear you have to drive a track as dangerous as the Nurburgring with some factor of safety unless you want to die.
    Aside from that pretty good video, cheers

    I would love too see dyno numbers for both cars.....that 340hp sounds great but awd also has the biggest lose of wheel hp, upwards of 35% in some awd systems. we're as fwd does not lose so much hp threw the transmission.... yes there would be a difference but that 36hp difference would be smaller.

    • @timmietz
      @timmietz 8 років тому

      35% loss? I don't think so. My escalade AWD ESV with 24s has 25% loss. Focus RS has 20% loss maximum

    Thanks for the review, but please next time include one of the most important factors that ALL (and I do mean ALL) reviewers neglect ... what is the HP to weight ratio? It's a sports car, this is the most important number you can provide viewers who are into sports cars. After some research the Honda is 9.9 lbs per HP (3050 lbs / 306 HP), the Ford is 9.8 lbs per HP (3459 lbs / 350 HP).

    A great comparison video that hits all of the bullet points. However, for the purposes of the US market, it would appear that the Type R would come out on top. Thanks!

    Love the RS, the engineering behind both is pretty impressive and for the type R to make it in a video with an AWD car capable of more in about any situation is impressive.. unfortunately the type R is one of the ugliest cars I have ever seen (my opinion) If the RS wasn't an option id probably buy a cheaper used car and mod it for the track and out do the type R for less money in the long run anyway
