Got a 19 XR650L used to run premium, aswell as in my 2020 HD2500 and my 2006 Harley Softail...
Now run cheap gas in all of them.
My previous truck was a 2016 Silverado and would knock when I floored it untill I ran high test.(Was a 5.3 RCSB) Now with the 2500 I drive like an old man and dont care about every ounce of performance. Both bikes dont seem to care about the octane.Harley has V&H fuel pack, XR has jet kit and seem to run same. All three suck down fuel...lets go brandon!!!

I never check the reading on the display for fuel economy, but I calculate the mpg at every fill. It's been constantly increasing. At the moment I'm getting 94 mpg imperial which is 78 - 79 mpg US measure on mixed riding. I use 87 octane regular shell gas in the 300L.

I got sick and tired of paying for “unleaded” gas. I’ve seen tests run on the gasoline from the pumps of stations with multiple-octane from one hose and they said that the unleaded gets contaminated with regular gas because it’s stored in the hose before you select it. If you only buy a couple of gallons you’re likely buying mostly regular gas.
    So…
    I make my own unleaded.
All you need is a gas can full of regular gas. It doesn’t matter if it has alcohol or not, but you will need a higher octane than regular, as you will see in a moment.
Pour the gas into a clear glass container as you will need to see the gas level(s). Allow for the gas to settle a few minutes for the gas and alcohol/water to separate (they will). Here is where having a cover for the glass tank matters.
Get a gas syphon (nothing fancy just a half inch or larger of gas resistant plastic will do).
Syphon the gas which is now on the bottom back into your gas can. You will be able to see the gas/alcohol & water line from the side. Stop siphoning just before you get all the gas.
Now you have pure gasoline, and a mix of alcohol/water as a residue.
I syphon that off into a different can to be disposed of (check your local recycling)
As you have probably noticed, removing the alcohol lowers the octane slightly, which is why you don’t want regular 87 octane. 89-91 will do to start.
This gas works great for bikes, cars, small gas engines and especially generators that are used as backups.

I bought a brand new Honda CT125 last February. I actually checked the mileage on it with 89 octane non ethanol gas, it got 119.9 mpg. I loved that little bike. I put 3090 miles on it this past year. I weigh usually about 215 on the bathroom scales. So the mileage was pretty good. I wanted just a little more power and speed for the times I do have to get on the highway. Probably 90-95% of my riding was back roads. I sold it a few weeks back to the very first guy I told I was for sale. He bought it on the spot. Wish I could have afforded to keep it. I bought a 2022 CRF300 Rally that had 610 miles on it. I've only put 20 miles on it since I got it. Looking forward to warmer weather so I can take a good spin on it. I like it a lot so far. Thanks for your videos.

I need to do this test. I didn't think it would go that far. I'm used to using the odometer as my fuel gauge. Two rides on the 300 and I already miss the 3.2 gallon tank on my old XR250L. I also hate the IRC tires as I knew I would. I have the 250 set up sweet and this is one of the reasons I was reluctant to get a new bike. No one makes a bigger tank for the 300 and it looks to me like there is no room to put a bigger tank. You have the logical solution although I didn't want to add a luggage rack to my bike.
Just back from ride two. 74.2 miles from full tank to only two bars left on fuel gauge. I'm thinking 80 miles before it's time to start hunting down a gas station. It said I was getting 71.7 average mpg. I was taking it really easy too. Some first and second gear trail riding, but mostly street. 5th and 6th gear.

Farther than I thought on reserve. I need to get more comfortable running my tank lower. I think I fear running out of gas too much. Carrying gas in tank only adds weight when you don't ever use it and limits your range if you are afraid to run low. Thanks for the demo! 👍

Good video on my KTM 390 Adventure I can get as good as 2.9 liters per hundred Km. ( 81.16 miles per gallon,) that is taking it easy and going around 80 Km per hour ( 50 miles per hour ) but average riding and I like to take off fast, to get up to speed as fast as I can most of the time, I will average 3.3 liters per hundred Km. ( 71 miles per gallon ) that is checked on the bike as well as when I fill up, bike seams to be wright on. Hear on the Island our roads are 80 Km and 90 Km per hour so that is mostly what I ride. Do slow down on dirt roads when the get rough and hear they can get pretty bad, large pot holes, deep ruts, mud and sand.
On my DR650 with a 20 liter gas tank around 4.1to 4.8 liters per 100 km ( 57 to 49 miles per gallon ) checked at the pumps, but I do as many gravel and dirt roads as I can find on the DR650 and some are more like tractor trails with 2' of grass growing up the center. and some with deep sand and mud. If you want a good tire for paved, gravel and dirt roads try the Dunlop TrailMax Mission have them on bough my bikes and they last a long time, 9,200 Km on my KTM and have to use a gage to see the ware, checked at 8,500 and only down 1mm ( 1/32" )

With my 250L I used to check it every time, I don't really care anymore. It seemed to always be between 65-75 mpg. I kind of attribute that to never really filling the tank to the exact point every time. I usually try to fill up to the tubes, but variations on how the bike maybe sitting can vary how much fuel it might actually get. I have never used 87, always 91. Since we got a QT in Joplin I now have an option for actual non ethanol, has it's own hose so it doesn't get mixed, hopefully.

I had a Harley 883, and got better millage using regular 87 octane. than I did running high test if it calls for 86 or higher you will most likely get best gas millage using 87 octane. You should give it a test and see. I have also got better millage in some of my cars using 87 octane. Unless your bike or car calls for high octane, there should be no difference on performance, and some times you will get better with 87.over 91. I did in my 883 it made a big difference in performance and millage, using 87.

I'm sure Itchy loves this bike. Great range/MPG and lite weight. She rode a CFR250 all over Africa. She loved it. The 250 needed more power for sand dune climbing but how often does anyone do that? My DR650 is air/oil cooled, weighs about the same as the CFR300 and has much more power than CFR 300, however the 650's MPG is not near as good as the 300. Surprise. I think mostly the MPG makes the CFR300 more desirable to the sweet girl.

It's ridiculous, imo, that the tank on this doesn't hold closer to 3 gallons, and the rally version between 4-5. In the south west, it would be really easy to run out of gas if your doing some remote area riding where there aren't many gas stations.

I don't own one (yet) but if/when I do, I will use regular 87 octane. The owner's manual says to use 86 or higher. The octane is strictly a measure of how much the gas resists detonation. I trust the Honda engineers to know what level of octane is good for their engine. Don't be fooled by gas company marketing departments who call it "premium". There is nothing premium about it.
