John, this is so spot on. As someone currently interviewing (and with experience on both sides of that process), it’s so easy to get taken for a ride if a person isn’t able to read between the lines of what they hear and see of their prospective employers.

Always remember what John tells you here. IT'S NOT YOUR BUSINESS. It's about time someone with enough experience exposed bosses for what they really are. Toxicity is the reason I opened my own shop and now have no one to answer to but myself. Not all employers fall into this category but those that do will try to steal your self-worth and sanity if you allow it. I grew up in family that preached "hard work", "first to arrive, last to leave". Unfortunately, it was the wrong advice to instill into an impressionable young man and because working for the same company for half your life was common a generation ago, it wasn't the right attitude to have in my life. Too bad it took me years to figure it out but thankfully wasn't too late before I woke up. Whether you are in a management position (salaried) or hourly, they will try to weaken you, tear you down, embarrass you, expose you, lie and deceive you-all in the hope that you will fall into their trap out of fear of losing your job. Do not be a sucker. I will NEVER work for anyone again. Well done, John. If you want to hear some horror stories that span private practices to some of the biggest eyewear companies, I'd be happy to share my experiences and expose them for what they all are. Good luck!

Sounds like you ended up finding your place. Good for you. I do hope people understand I'm not bashing anyone here. Like I say 50% do a good job. Another 30% do a good job at 1 and 2 of them and that isn't necessarily a bad thing. So 80% of your ODs out there are just typical bosses with all the normal strengths and weaknesses of any other human.

Maybe I did. Funny - I was expecting about 100 comments like yours when I posted that video a few hours ago.

    Good Tips
Personally, I had the pleasure and being congratulated by other staff on getting two toxic bosses fired.
So far to have senior HR, have the director write a “personal letter of apology” to me, before they canned his asss

Do only ODs own practices in America? In the uk, optoms and opticians both own practices.

In the US optician means someone who sells glasses, they don't preform refraction/exams. ODs perform refraction & routine medical eye exams. We have some independent optician owned shops but they are pretty rare. The ODs control everything because they can write the "prescriptions." It is a screwed up system but very unlikely to change. AI and subjective auto-refraction may get a leg up someday but doubtful.

@@LaramyKOptical I am a trainee optometrist from the UK. UK is similar to America but as I say many dispensing opticians own practices/ stores. In the uk, many ‘opticians’ become contact lens opticians (CLO). CLOs check health of the anterior (conjunctiva , sclera, lids and lashes, cornea, anterior chamber and lens) eye and fit CLs. Many CLOs also do medical anterior eye exams. Thank you for posting content on opticianry. This is very helpful for the optician aspect of the optometry exams.

What made the doctor who only excelled at business so good at business? Was it through underpaying people?

No, not at all. He did it by understanding how to maximize every transaction, locking his rent in 10 years grandfathered, being in the right place at the right time, a hundred other things but no he was quite good to staff, decent pay, PTO, retirement plan, decent hours, realistic workloads, uniform allowance.
