    You are on point with this one. If you change the way you look at things. Things begin to change. Fear is a mindset that is developed as well as courage. I was once afraid of trucks for some of the reasons people mention. Now it's my passion to get my own fleet after driving for 3 years. I won't stop until I do so. It all begins with your thoughts. Educate yourself, practice and what is foreign will become common.

    As an OTR trainer, the fear and "what if" factor did play out a lot in my mind when students drove while I was asleep. But a few things helped me through it:
    1. Being a decent judge of character
    2. The extra pay I earned
    3. The company allowed shutdowns in emergency weather.
    4. Had the option to take the winters off if I chose and come back in spring.
    5. And always being able to park someplace decent with amenities.
    ....While I'm not currently a trainer. I did have a set of concerns at my new job due to the fact that I've never hauled doubles. And over the past few months I've asked my supervisor questions from time to time pertaining to dollys and hazmat stuff. And it used to made me feel a bit inadequate. But there's a saying in trucking, and that's no one knows everything and everyday there's something new to learn.

    • @someguy8498
      @someguy8498 2 роки тому

      When I started training as wise old trainer told me that he truly believes that almost every single human has an innate ability to stay alive. Even though students can do some questionable things when learning how to drive a semi, that self preservation will innately kick in under high pressure situations. You are correct. Being a good judge of character is key. Always make the student fully understand that if they are sleepy or unsure of any given situation, just come to a stop as soon a possible and you will help them/take over the driving with no judgment towards them. Make the students completely comfortable about telling you anything they maybe nervous or scared of. If they are nervous or scared, a good trainer will identify the problem and work with the student to become comfortable. Saftey is key. I don’t want to spend my pile of money on hospital bills 🤣

    The biggest fear I had as a rookie was backing around people watching me. I knew from my upbringing I had the talent, but I got in my own head. The first blind side back I had was in a VERY tight lot at a shipper and I just felt everyone's eyes on me. I had to slide the tandems all the way back and midway through the maneuver slide them back forward. Once I got it weaseled in there I saw someone else struggling and I got out and helped the driver. Long story short once I helped him in there and the lumpers were on my trailer I talked to other drivers and I learned that plant is bad notorious for even experienced drivers to have critical incidents. Once again a certain level of confidence in your abilities goes a long way.

    My dear sister I'm confused with your conversation actually. I think what your viewers are conveying is that there are certain risks that people can take that require courage. Let's look at some facts about transportation risks related to driving a large combination vehicle. You are literally risking your freedom because you have a greater risk of doing more damage and causing more injury if you do have an accident. You risk your income potential each time you drive with the possibility of being inspected and missing something. DOT inspections can cost you money and your license/ability to drive. You risk missing out on important things that are happening at home with family and friends if you get stuck in various locations and can't make it home for whatever reason (weight issues, break downs, shipping/receiving). You also risk your health. Some people are prone to blood clotting and don't know it until they have been seated behind a wheel one hour too many on any random day. So honestly you sound like you're trying to convey something but I'm not sure what. A piece of advice, talk with your counselor about "healthy fear" which is fear that is worked through, compartmentalized and dealt with in a healthy productive and beneficial way. You may have "fear" and recognize it as "anxiety". Personally, I'm a little suspicious of anyone who tells me they have no fear of driving an 18 wheeler.

    I think the overuse of a singular word or a couple of words you are not used to hearing, like nouns that apply more to your concerns. Why one has anxiety or unease is usually, as you mentioned is a lack of experience. What was the probability of getting an introductory ride as some O/Os should provide that experience for newbies at a nominal price? It is a moot proposition now though. Drive defensively every time you sit in the cab. If you use engine braking everywhere you are driving too fast. And in normal weather, the worst time to operate a vehicle of any type is 3:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. as you may have been familiarized with Circadian rhythm or sleep cycle disorder. So imagine the challenge when the weather is bad or you have to put on chains and you know it is nap time. Decisions are crucial, so yes chain up first then nap within 10 minutes after doing so.

    I watch every video from the start,I don't make comments. I just want to say ..."This intellectual,intelligent,mindful,sophisticated woman is extremely rare. Not just because of this video,but if you watch her...she does things very well thought out. I can relate,because I do. But this isn't about me,it's about actual You Tube channels that make sense. (SIDUCTIVE,SKIMP DEE,are other examples).and I am a 100% straight male ! It's just these woman speak from the heart & NEVER sugarcoat anything. I don't really watch the dudes as much,only because it's nice to get a different perspective from the opposite sex. But keeping it real,they can be more educational than my brothers. Much Love !

    Fear is to warn us of danger...not make us afraid of it..Some fear is normal...being fearless is not. People fear the unknown what they cannot control....Driving a big truck may not me fearful for you but for others it is...That should not stop you or anyone else from achieving your goals. I am 52 yrs old and starting classes for CDL Class A in late June and I am scarred..but I am going to do it anyway. That's how we see the fruits of courage within us.

    This is a beautiful and thoughtful message to new drivers. I have been driving 25 years and I definitely had some serious doubts and insecurities that challenged my belief in being able to thrive in this business but I told myself that I would not quit until I knew that I could do the job and then If the job just wasn't for that would be okay but not because I couldn't do it. 👍👍👍👍

    take it from a man who started driving at the same age as you, i drove for 25 years otr regional local flatbed reefer dry van to all points in the united states NEVER TAKE TRUCKING FOR GRANTED, the day you think you know it all PARK IT BECAUSE YOU CAN BE KILLED FOR ONE SIMPLE MISTAKE I HAVE SEEN IT WITH MY OWN EYES IM WAS AFRAID WHEN I FIRST STARTED BUT THAT FEAR ERASED AND I STARTED BEING A PROFESSIONAL DRIVER, im 53 now i can still get down behind the when i dont need a gps to navigate so what do you mean being afraid? REAL TRUCKERS ARE NEVER AFRAID WHEN YOU HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL TO NAVIGATE ACROSS RUGGED TERRAIN WITH 40 tons!!!
