That performance of Tin Pan Alley was a master class in blues. Every musician on that stage was present and in the moment, with Stevie and Johnny just flying with that tight rhythm section as their wings. Kudos forever to Chris Whipper Layton on drums, Tommy Shannon on bass, and Reese Wynans on keyboards.

Hi from Canada. I stumbled onto SRV by chance 6 months ago on UA-cam and have listened to him every day since. I am 70 yrs old and have loved most types of music throughout my life and unbelievably I missed this great artist, don’t ask me how. Thank goodness for UA-cam . Really like your reaction especially when giving your technical knowledge on Stevie ‘s playing.

I'm lucky enough to have seen him about 5 or six times.
I had tickets for his last performance at Alpine Valley, but gave them to my brother in law because my wife and I went to Buddy Guy's Legend's club.
Buddy, Clapton, SRV, and his brother Jimmy, were All going back to the club after the show for a big jam session.
Lots of big players were already there: Dave Mason, Willie Dixon, Carlos Santana, Junior Wells.
They were jamming all evening waiting for around midnight.
Then we got word that they won't be coming.
Wasn't till about an hour later we were told that Clapton's helicopter crashed.
Didn't find out details about Stevie till morning.
I was in shock.
I was a Clapton nut since my teens and I thought SRV was from another Galaxy.
He was the sweetest guy.
Biggest loss to music in my opinion.
He saw Copeland in the crowd and pulled him up on stage for 3 songs. And Copeland mad up those lyrics off the cuff. Master musicians having fun doing what they love to do

Love how Stevie stands back and lets Johnny Copeland have his solo's and runs. Stevie dose the same thing when he plays with BB King and again with Albert King.
I know this is a pretty long post but please read the following quote by Eric Clapton on SRV’s greatness. This tells us everything we need to hear....

I don't think anyone has commanded my respect more, to this day. The first time I heard Stevie Ray, I thought, "Whoever this is, he is going to shake the world." I was in my car and I remember thinking, I have to find out, before the day is over, who that guitar player is. That doesn't happen to me very often, that I get that way about listening to music. I mean, about three or four times in my life I've felt that way, in a car, listening to the radio, where I've stopped the car, pulled over, listened, and thought, I've got to find out before the end of the day, not, you know, sooner or later, but I have to know NOW who that is.
...and I remember being fascinated by the fact that he never, ever seemed to be...lost in any way...It was as though he never took a breather...or took a pause to think where he was gonna go next, it just flowed out of him. It's going to be a long time before anyone that brilliant will come along again.
I didn't get to see or hear Stevie play near often enough, but every time I did I got chills and knew I was in the presence of greatness.He seemed to be an open channel and music just flowed through him. It never seemed to dry up.
I have to tell this story: We played on the same bill on his last two gigs. On the first night, I watched his set for about half an hour and then I had to leave because I couldn't handle it!. I knew enough to know that his playing was just going to get better and better. His set had started, he was like two or three songs in, and I suddenly got this flash that I'd experienced before so many times whenever I'd seen him play, which was that he was like a channel. One of the purest channels I've ever seen, where everything he sang and played flowed straight down from heaven. Almost like one of those mystic Sufi guys with one finger pointing up and one finger down. That's what it was like to listen to. And I had to leave just to preserve some kind of sanity or confidence in myself.

Another quote by Clapton from his interview in Rolling Stone magazine October 17, 1991 regarding Stevie's death and last performance: "The worst thing for me was that Stevie Ray had been sober for three years and was at his peak. When he played that night, he had all of us standing mere with our jaws dropped. I mean, Robert Cray and Jimmie Vaughan and Buddy Guy were just watching in awe. There was no one better than him on this planet. Really unbelievable."

Stevie is playing a Strat-style Danelectro built for him by his good friend Charley Wirz in 1984. It was forever known as "Charley" in his line-up of guitars.
I understand Charley made an identical Strat for Jimmie and they both played those guitars at Charley's funeral.
Of all the reaction videos seen to this collaberation...you, good sir, are the first to nail it completely down. Stevie was good as a soloist yet he seemed to climb to an even higher plain when playing with one of his inspirations, as Copeland was.

Stevie was the “Lord High Exalted Mystic Master of the Stratocaster”. Jimmy opened the door. Stevie kicked it wide open.
Stevie was a guitar savant. He had an intimate relationship with his ax like no other.
That is the old guard passing the torch you will never see this again
To get the true measure of SRV you have to watch his live videos. While his studio recorded releases are good, his live audio/video recordings are what convey and preserve his greatness for all time.
His absolute mastery of the blues guitar coupled with his unpolished yet spot on and sincere vocals make SRV the epitome of a bluesman.
He's been my favorite for a long time.

SRV paid homage to the blues greats and loved to share the stage with them. BB, Albert King and Johnny. That performance was at the Montreux Jazz festival, the year before he performed there to boos but met guys that helped advance his career.

Not forgetting the other band members, they were all amazing, keyboard man was perfecto 'low key fire' complemented it perfectly. Drums and bass man were brilliant too, kept it all flowing beautiful tempo while keeping the 2 main men in the highlight. Just an amazing set, I soooo wish I could have been there. Some lucky people that night.

I happened across your channel and your were doing a reaction to SRV / Johnny Copeland and was curious to see what you thought. I liked when you commented 'let it not be said etc., etc. I thought hmm wonder if he's familiar? If not this might turn out to be for his personal enjoyment. SRV was a musical genius with a guitar that was an extension of him. BTW I loved your reaction, it is always so great watching first timers. I still get goose bumps upon goose bumps every time.

Saw SRV live and he was always top shelf on stage. Now if you really want to see a lick laid down on a strat? SRV and his brother did Pipeline on the doubleneck live together....just melts your mind! get a chance to catch his inauguration lineup or his soundcheck they are incredible as well. SRV live is the only way to watch any of his stuff......And I'm on a shortbus to hell if I don't mention Lenny...true artistry there.
SRV's the G.O.A.T., and Johnny, when he opens his mouth and works that fretboard, it brings out the stank on everybody's face...including yours, LOL! Great reaction.

Of all his Texas Flood videos, the one I love most is at the blues festival and kills from the first note. He owned that show, but didn't strut or show off. He always had relationships with his guitars, music and songs. You can see it in how he plays and his face and body moves. I'm a singer, songwriter, guitar player and don't make those faces, because I don't play that good! It's great to see a master at his craft, gently coaxing jazz riffs with Riviera Paradise, or beating and bending it into submission like he does with so many songs. There are few artists that I enjoy watching as much as I do Stevie. I tell everyone who comes to me for advice, DON'T play or sing a song. Let the song play, breathe and sing THROUGH you and take you wherever it wants you to go. And that's exactly what he does. He was better than an incredibly talented musician. He was a truly amazing, gifted Artist... Thanks for the memories Stevie, I pray you play where Angels sing...
Montreux is where Stevie made his bones. Johnny Copeland was a legendary Texas
bluesman, but with this song, you can witness the passing of the torch.

one of the best things about this is he kept it restrained, it was about him and Copeland not just him. self restraint and a lot of respect were shown by stevie.

I tell you what, the fact that this performance was not the number one choice in the polls proves that people haven't heard enough music! I was a fan of Johnny Copeland before anyone knew who Stevie Ray Vaughan was! Then, in 1987, I was fortunate enough to see him in Daytona Beach! This is my number one favorite UA-cam video and I have watched it hundreds of times! You don't get to see greatness together on stage like this often!
( UA-cam will not allow me to share the link but, look for Stevie Ray Vaughan and Albert King special. It's an hour and a half long so, I'm not suggesting you react to it but, it shows you the relationship he had with some of the greatest blues artists of all time!

There are some really good Johnny Copeland playlist on UA-cam. He does some really gritty Texas Blues.
Both SRV and Johnny Copeland are from Texas and have a very similar approach to their art. Texas Blues has also been called Dirty Blues because it's hard and gritty.
SRV Guitar Hero. He really is incredibly versatile and mind blowing. Can be really sweet folksy on a 12 string “Life by the Drop”, to R&R like “Love Struck Baby”; Hendrix like “Little Wing/Voodoo; my favorite blues “Aint Gone N Give Up on Love” (Daytona Beach); to pure rocket fuel “Couldn’t Stand the Weather” (Capitol Theater 1985 version esp): 😎🎸
This was a master class on how to play blues with soul.
Saw him live three times always left me in shell shock. 1st time he went and set on the edge of the stage and jammed for along time. Just melted the place. 3rd and last drove 7 1/2 hours see him play in TN.

Being from Texas I've seen Stevie Ray Vaughn in concert several times. After every show I was totally blown away by the skill Stevie Ray displayed. I have all of his CD'S and still listen to him regularly. Stevie Ray is gone but his music will live on forever. RIP Stevie!

Now that's a beautiful thing right there. SRV is the best.
SRV had some chops, but his guitar grabs your soul and has a conversation. Johnny Copeland had serious vocals, but his playing was very minimal by comparison. Complimented each other exceptionally well. Gotta see the Al King/SRV Texas Flood full session. Stevie plays down and just lets Al have at it. Simply incredible.

Crying at the fantasticness! Saw him in concert once. Unbelievably crappy. Till he came out after and plugged in and sat cross legged in the middle of the the stage and played for 2 hrs. GAWD!!
Best I've ever seen!!! I saw him twice the summer before he passed. He set his guitar on fire during both shows. I have seen NO clips of this on youtube, so that might be something worth looking for. Nice job with your videos. Also look for ACID BATH and GOATWHORE. Cannibal Corpse is on the top of my list also. Good luck.

August 25th 1990 music changed forever this dude Is a legend 1985 had better sound then today by far. SRV was so dedicated he would practice until the calluses came off his fingertips and he would glue them back on. No one will ever replicate him

Johnny Copeland is among the greats that white blues players like Stevie fucking REVERED!!! Just like Eric with BB King. Fucking idolized them. The younger black players didn't pay much attention to all that..... doing Motown etc they didn't really care about Robert Johnson but the white players (like the English players) also just fucking loved these older black players that started to all. BUT Stevie.....Stevie was on a plane by himself. No one like Stevie NO ONE and as Stevie would say FOR REAL!
