If you have not been told before. The company store was this, slavery in the 20th century. Some mining companies would open up a huge store that sold not just groceries but clothing, fabrics, coal to heat your house, kerosene for lamps, etc.. They would sell items to their employees by credits, not cash. The company would not pay their employees but just give them so many credits at their stores.
When you work in the mines you can only buy your food and the things that you need to live from the company store it's another way they get you they wanna keep you poor and in the mines

You mentioned you were confused by the term "Company Store" and the reference is very important from a historical perspective. In the early 1900's before labor law reforms, mining companies would often open the only store for miles and pay workers in credits which could be used only in that store, almost always at price-gouging rates...Hope that helps!
The company store also allowed employees to buy on credit, to trap the employees so they couldn't quit. It was viciously predatory.
Oh it's worse then that, they also 'rented' out the mineing equipment so if you didn't push enough coal that day you ended up oweing them money from the rented tools, lets not forget they also owned the housing the workers used and rented that to them as well, int he end they payed these people almost nothing and they coudl never get away from them.
It was company slavery, just what is now planned with "The great Reset", the company being the elite and the government.
To expand they had to buy their mining equipment there. Usually to the point they OWED the company at the end of the day.
It was not unusual for "The Company" to build and own the housing, therefore most of the miners salary was returned to the company through rent and purchasing groceries.

The company store was the only store in the old coal mining communities. It was owned by the mining company. Often, the men's wages were paid to the company store instead of directly to the workers. That way they had no choice but to use the store. If there was any money left in their store account on the next pay day, then and only then were they able to draw it out as cash money.
That's something. My dad's friend Phil was a miner in Pa and he was in an accident in the mines. 94 years old now and still going strong.
The company stores were known for overcharging because they were THE only store allowed in town. They'd allow you to buy on credit, but as long as you owed money to the store, you could not quit--and they charged interest on loans. There were plenty of men who died in the mines leaving their families in debt and in legal trouble as a result--and plenty of young men who went down into the mines to try to pay off their dead daddy's debts. That's what's meant by the line "St. Peter don't you call me, 'cause I can't go: I owe my soul to the company store." The singer is in financial trouble and can't afford to quit his job--possibly because he can't afford to leave his family in debt. So--he "owes his soul" figuratively, and maybe even literally if he can't even die to get free.
It should be pointed out that this was happening in the Appalachian coal mining region of the US. Some farmers were tricked into selling the mineral rights under their land. Then come in and strip mine the whole farm away.

Glad people are still covering this song. I grew up in a coal mining town in the 50's. Tennesse Earnie Ford's version was very popular, of course. In town center there was a company store, the miner's hospital, and the mine company office building. My mother's family were miners, and her experience with company stores was in the 1930s. She didn't have fond memories of the company store.

You could get most of your basic needs for living on credit from the store and it would be taken out of the workers check each month. Many people would end up owing the company that they worked for because of low pay and dept pile up . It was practiced heavily in the late 1800's and early 1900's . Some
companies even charged them rent on top of that because many of these companies were so far from town's that it was near impossible to get to them .

In case you were wondering, the high toned woman mentioned in the song is a women with light pigmentation in relation to her race. Such women were usually of African heritage but were mixed. In this song, the man takes no guff from anyone else, but only listens to his "high toned" woman.
No you don't want into the company store. As he says he has sold his soul to the company store🤪 Geoff is the bass for the group voiceplay. They are amazing. Better that other Acapella groups in my personal opinion. Just my opinion.
Can your opinion make them a "better" group than others? Yes, you like them the most of any group, but that's not better. No offense intended cause I'm not taking issue with your opinion, just the use of better (or best) when discussing a subjective topic like music or art. I think Floor Jansen is the master of her instrument, a true vocalist, but I hardly could say the best when Haley Reinhart is my favorite. Both are very talented but maybe your favorite is Sarah Vaughn. Just saying.

You are adorable. The Company Store was the store that supplied miners or rail road workers with food, tools, clothing. It was generally owned by the mining or railway company and the workers would buys goods on credit. So they would end up owing their soul to the company to pay for the goods.
Company Store refers to coal mining companies they often owned everything in the towns around the mines. They even at one time printed their own company script and payed their workers in it. The whole system was built around indebting their workers to their companies thus forcing them to work in their mines.

Another a Capela group to check out is Home Free. They have an amazing bass singer named Tim Foust, Home Free is more of a country acapella group but also cover R&B songs. Definitely worth checking out. They do a cover of Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire featuring Avi Kaplan from Pentatonics, that would be a good start.
Actually, since I respectfully disagree, the song to start a Home Free journey is Man of Constant Sorrow, and while it's not a base centric performance, it provides a well rounded presentation of the group's talent. Nothing wrong with Ring of Fire, Man has plenty of deep bass, it just not the focal point.

@@carladams5891 yes, well that's exactly why I made my suggestion so that Avi was not a part of the equation. Unadulterated Home Free (no offense to Avi, he's great, but he's not Home Free and they seem talented enough not to be supported by an outsider.) No argument about your preference for a live performance though I just picked my favorite video by them. Certainly I find myself leaning toward live music though maybe not always concert footage. PMJ with their one camera one take videos as an example.
bit of history in the USA, that song is talking about the cole mine industry. They had mining company owned towns, stores etc. instead of money, you got paid in company script which had no actual value and couldn't be used outside the town. since the currency had no real value you were essentially working for free. this also allowed those companies to charge you for everything. you earn 300 script a week you take lunch that's 20 script, pay for your company provided housing 150 script, buy food at the company owned grocery store another 50, need clothes etc you now are in debt, if you don't spend more than you are earning, they raise the costs.
In the early days before unions in the USA if you worked in a coal mine then you lived in mine housing, and you bought goods from a company store because you were not paid in money but credit to the company store. You could never save anything because credit at the store could not be withdrawn as cash. That is why it felt like the company store owned your soul.

When people worked in the mines they had to buy food, clothes, some equipment and such from the company who paid them. That was the company store. They always overcharged, and would extend the workers credit at a high interest rate. So you were always in debt because you always owed your bosses money.

It isn't just you. I also find deep, low voices of men to be very sexy and appealing. I think all or at least most of us women get weak in our bodies over that kind of voice. It is also a bonus when they are also tall as it gives us a great reason to wear our high heels. He does have his own channel but he is also a member of the Acapella group Voiceplay. As the other commenters have already told you, Geoff Castellucci is the bass singer of the acapella group 'Voice Play' but also has his own channel where he frequently harmonizes with himself in his covers. Geoff and 'Voice Play' are different style of acapella than 'Pentatonix' or 'Home Free' as they have more of a musical theater style that includes costumes, makeup, and really getting into character of their presentations--they also do all their own arrangements and production. As already explained, the company store he is referring to is a part of the dangerous, hard life coal miners lived before current labor laws and safety practices were in place (their wages were so low that they stayed in debt to the company store never being able to pay of the loan). Geoff also covers another classic old song about the hard coal miner's life in his solo of "Big Bad John". Your fondness for Geoff was adorable and common (you may want to check out Strong Lady D's reaction that includes a group of women swooning over Geoff in this song) You will definitely enjoy reacting to more Geoff solos and Voice Play and I look foward to your journey!

Bisscute, I am sorry to be the bearer of the bad news (for you) here but Geoff is very happily married. His wife, Kathy, is part of his production team and in some cases has done his makeup (there are certain videos where it will be obvious that he has makeup). They also have a son together. Kathy even appeared in one of his videos. :)

As a follow-on to the other comments about the 'company store', if a miner wanted to leave working for the company, they had to either be completely paid up so they didn't owe anything, or be able to pay off any existing debt. I'm sure that if they didn't have that ability to pay when they left, thugs paid by the boss would attack the departing miner and deliver a savage, possibly crippling beating, making it much harder for them to promptly start any new job. They would also send people around to talk very badly about their reputation as a worker.
The store was usually very willing to extend credit to the worker or their family, because it might make them feel better about the company, but the debt was allowed to build up, and keep building, until a miner felt like they owed even their soul to the store. I'm sure that the priests or pastors of the mining communities were encouraged to speak very highly of the virtues of hard work and making sure debts were either paid, or never built in the first place. The owners and management of the company would have found that to be cheap manipulation of a nearly captive labor force.
I recently saw Geoff's cover of Ain't No Sunshine. It's a creative arrangement that embraces the song's meaning and also showcases Geoff's large range rather nicely. I recommend it to you!
This song is about how the Mining Business ran back in the day. Workers made up the town that the mine was located. The Company Store was where all goods were bought from. So the Owners of the Mines not only owned the Miners contracts but also were responsible for the goods purchased from the Miners and their family. Most miners got in debt from the high prices for goods sold and the owners gave loans to the families so they can work in the mines forever. So that is where that lyric comes from.

In the old days miners were just about enslaved by the mining companies in this way: there was only one store within a short distance, the one run and owned by the company. The company requires the miners to buy their own tools, would pay the wages in company credits that were only good at the company store, which charged the miners exorbitant prices. So the longer the miners worked for the mine, the more they went into debt to the company store. They essentially became slaves until the labor reforms.
While not the original, I would definitely recommend listening to Tennessee Ernie Ford's version of Sixteen Tons, it is the best known version and has been inducted into the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry.

The "I owe my soul to the company store" phrase refers to the small communities basically built around something like a coal mine production plant. The workers received wages, but had to use them at the local store, which was also run by their employer.
There were instances where the thing was set up such that the cost of living was the same as wages, so you were basically working for free for room and board. They could also pay you in "store credits", to prevent you from setting aside money.

The 'company store' referred to in the song was a general store operated by the mining companies to supply their employees with groceries, toiletries and other items, usually at a severe price increase. To 'Owe your soul to the company store' didn't take much.
The interesting thing about Geoff is that he's half-deaf. That's why he took up bass singing. His technique is very similar to Mongolian throat singing, and almost like a Beethoven situation, he actually 'feels' the music more than he actually hears it. That's why he has a technique and sound that he has. Just a little interesting fun fact.

So, the people that owned the coal mines set up little 'towns' for the workers to live in right next to the mine, including a 'company store' which was the only place you could buy food and all your other needs. They 'graciously' also built the homes that the miners would have to rent. Catch was, they didn't pay the miners in real cash, they issued company 'scrip', printed pieces of paper in various denominations that the miners would have to use to pay for the rent and everything they bought at the company store. Not paid enough to cover all those needs, oh, no problem, we'll let you take 'credit', basically saying we'll advance you what you need to pay for what you're buying now, but you'll have to sign a paper to pay it all back before you'll be allowed to leave. So, of course, the miners just found themselves 'deeper in debt' all the time. And since there was no regular money in the system, they couldn't even try and leave because the company scrip was worthless outside of the company town.

Coal mining companies used to own incredible amounts of land. Often the company would own the land where the mine was located along with all of the land around it. The companies would build towns to house their workers. The only businesses and stores were owned by the company. Credit was extended to the workers with difficult terms resulting in the miners never being able to pay off their debt. They were stuck doing dangerous work for low wages and buying all of their supplies from the company that allowed no competition in their towns. If the worker offended, he could be fired and would be kicked out of company housing along with his family to starve so you don't want to make the company mad.

So the whole idea of the company store is that when miner's used to get paid the companies used to pay the workers with tokens or money that was only refundable at the company store. So these people would never get ahead in life and tbe companies would keep the actual money. So it would seem that since the workers were so dependent on the company store becouse the money they were paid couldn't be used anywhere else.

You've now availed yourself to two of the most popular a Capella groups and there is just one more to go that is supported by an outstanding bass - Home Free (and Tim Foust). "Man of Constant Sorrow" is a wonderful cover for an introduction to the group and while it's not bass centric, there is no slouching around by Tim on the song. What I like about this piece as an introduction song are all the different elements the voices mimic instruments it's hard to figure out there were no musical instruments involved beyond their voices.
