[CELL SITE IN A SUITCASE: SONIM RDK WITH FIRSTNET HANDS-ON]
Cell towers. Over the last thirty years they’ve become so commonplace that you probably don’t even notice them anymore - but without them, your smartphone would be nothing but a WiFi tablet. In past videos I’ve shown you how cell sites can be hidden in plain sight in places like church steeples, or built to withstand the worst weather in North America at the top of a mountain. Today, I’m gonna show you how a cell tower can be packed into a suitcase … and how doing so can help save lives.
Join me for another MrMobile "hands-on" (that's really more of a trunkload)
as I take the Sonim Rapid Deployment Kit-3 out to the end of Long Island in search of cellular coverage thin enough to justify using a satellite 22,500 miles away. The RDK3 is a cell site in a suitcase, and today's video is all about how it joins forces with a BGAN from Cobham and service from AT&T FirstNet to keep first responders connected in the worst of times.

[ABOUT CELL TOWER IN A SUITCASE]
MrMobile's Cell Tower In A Suitcase / Rapid Deployment Kit Hands-On was produced following several days with a Sonim RDK-3, Cobham Explorer 710 BGAN and Inmarsat service provided by AT&T FirstNet / Sonim / Inmarsat Government. Production devices running production software.

I worked for a wireless provider from 1999 through 2005 (when we got gobbled up by a big player). I was in the room for our company’s first SMS message test, first GSM call, and first blackberry activation. This video is so cool. I miss this type of work. Thanks for making this video! It takes me back.

Been a sonim xp8 user for a little over a year, after I realized it only made sense for a rugged phone in my life (I'm a father, hiker, runner, biker, swimmer, etc) and this phone checks all the boxes for me.

Moreover, I'm a fan of your work, and wish you all of the best.

As a previous citizen journalist who was in Syria one only note i have about this video is that u have a privacy issue with Immarsat, we had some suspicious in Syria that the UAE branch of the company was sabotaging data against Syrian rebels giving information to Syrian authorities that might be life threatening to many ppl, I think this technology shall be under strict privacy protocols to insure the safety of people using it during those uncomfortable times, other than that thank you for ur great videos! this is really gold.

Nice plug for First Net. As a 25 year Vet in the wireless industry here to tell you that aside from 700 MHz spectrum allocated to AT&T to deploy over 25 years you can get the same Wireless Priority services from T-Mobile and Verizon. We all support first responders with preemption and priority services.

This is also why I find an FM radio to be a VERY important feature in smartphones. I never listen to radio for the music in the age of streaming, Flac and MP3, but FM is far more reliable after disasters because the range is much greater and there's no bandwidth issue

Ham radio hobbyist here. These scenarios are exactly when amateur radio becomes so valuable. A handheld radio will get you 1-3 miles of range, depending on your environment (much further if repeaters are still operable). That seems like better coverage for less gear cost than this system. Of course, I'm assuming you don't need a license to utilize the gear demoed in this video.

In the near future, Starlink could be used to backhaul instead of the much slower Inmarsat. Instead of the finicky moving of the satellite module, the phased array antenna would just need to be set down. Predictably, latency and speed will be far better.

What i don't understand, and here come some more geekness, is why emergency services still depend on old circuited switched calling system's for calls and communication.
In a nutshell, volte is simple voip calling, and check your WhatsApp data usage after a long call, you'd count the used data in MBs, ofc volte is nothing without service, but the combination of volte and vowifi could mean life savings communication getting priority and so avoiding the old circuited switched network's
