I can only *try* to imagine the frustration you must have felt when it was actually re-released after five long years, years you were waiting to finally review and quite possibly even recommend it, just for the price to be raised ridiculously high in a flat out ironic play on the games theme. I feel you, Quins :(
"If you bet your bum and then loose your bum on a terrible business decision, not only is nobody coming to give you a new bum, your friends will then own your bum." Quality, vintage SU&SD material right there!
Oh my goodness - I did not see that price coming! With that sort of pricing, the art/components are inexcusable. There are such beautiful games at this price range that this is impossible to justify. How can the stunning Lisboa, with its pricy components, be much cheaper than this game? Not to mention Scythe, or Rising Sun, which are both far cheaper despite detailed miniatures. I am sure the game is fantastic, but I am not sure how good it'd have to be to justify that sort of price tag. After all, the poor artwork with the dry theme pretty much guarantees that it'll be near-impossible to get to the table... which does not bode well for making the investment worthwhile.
that price-tag is round the bend insane. It has the pricetag of an overblown complex kickstarter game, but without the rule complexity or miniatures... and when its a game aimed at people interested in getting good deals... ironic.
I'm surprised that with the criticism of the price and the components that there was no mention of the publishers deciding to reduce the number of containers down from the original version.
The original version has resin ships as well, but with a matte, almost dusty surface, which makes them seem weathered. The containers themselves are wooden blocks. The art direction for the original version is pretty solid.
Brilliant. Incredible how the shirts and ties make you look so "official" and make your opinions seem like the last word on this game. It's like magic. I'll try this on my own channel if I learn to talk again. A stroke a few years ago, you know.
I mean I think they really were excited about it. I was excited when I bought a new Iphone charger that has nylon coating and better support for the cord, and it's super long.
I had the older version and, had I realized how much I would miss it, I wouldn't have given it up. At least the person who has my old copy has it available for play at our local game store. Even they point out to new players to keep an eye on the economy.
14:20 : Actually, the old version of Container had resin or ceramic or something boats too. But I do agree this version is way too expensive for what it is. Also, one mini-bag for each container... 85 mini-bags! lol...
Out of my regular playing group of 5, I think Container might be one of the only games we all universally agree is amazing. It is overpriced and it does have bad components but damn, the emergent gameplay is just so good. Definitely one of my favourite games of all time.
Your previous review of Food Chain Magnate convinced me to buy it. I agree that the artwork seemed to fit it very well - I never felt it took me out of the game. Likewise, Container looks amazing for my gaming group, but the size is going to be a pain. Thanks for the always-thoughtful reviews!
Funny enough when you gave the elevator pitch I excitedly said "God this game looks amazing" lol. Then the scenario you gave immediately after reaffirmed my excitement. This economy looks amazing
I'm glad you talked about the artwork for this game because I was looking at it and thinking how ugly it was, that someone just got random assets and used Photoshop to put them together. For a $90 game that's just unacceptable! When I could buy a heavy miniature game for the same price and have nice pieces to look at, I'd chose that any day. Though I would like to play this game once, maybe I can convince my local board game store to get a demo copy. Also I love how "Boring" you guys are :)
Ugh, I know! There's so many games that are fun to play, with well thought out, deep mechanics that lead to incredible play sessions... but their art isn't the Mona Lisa of board gaming! Why can't someone make a boardgame that's just a ball of chrome for gamers like you and me, Lytane, those of us who don't care about fun but rather how pretty a thing is? Woe is us, woe is us! Sarcasm and mockery aside, this has always been one of my big gripes about SUASD; they always give a game shit for having """bad art""". Heck, they did it in their last review too. Apparently a game about trading and acquiring spices has bad art because its cards have pictures of... growing and buying spices. Wut. As long as it's clear what everything is, it shouldn't matter how much some artist pretties it up. These are *games*, not art museum pieces. And I'm not saying a game can't be visually attractive. I'm just saying I don't think a game deserves to get slammed for using dull, muted tones, it deserves to get slammed for having dull, boring gameplay.
Exactly. And there are allowances for price. If the same game was $50 it would hardly be worth a mention, but when you hit a certain price-point you simply have to compare all aspects, including art and components. It absolutely is part of the discussion when the publisher decides to make big chunky plastic bits that cost a lot and then skimp pretty hard on the look of the rest of the game!
I suppose the reason I was so harsh and, well... rude, to be frank, is because to me the game looks fine. The only thing shown in the review that looked awful were the cards showing how much each player's earning for crates of different colors; those look like garbage. But Matt brought up the player board saying how it looks awful, that the theme is lacking, and I just was really confounded. It's a game about manufacturing goods, storing the shipping containers in warehouses, and then shipping them. The player board shows a dockyard, with docks, those biiig loading cranes, warehouses, and further back, the factories. That seems entirely on-theme, and then to see a comment saying how it looks outright ugly... well, I got a little nasty, I'll admit, and probably let my feelings for all the other times that SUASD have (from my perspective) unfairly knocked a game for its art. The points about the price point are well made and I do agree overall. The money being flipped on each side, and overall it could be of better quality since as has been mentioned the big bulk of that newly doubled price probably is coming from those big beefy miniatures, so getting more/better artists probably would have been ideal. But even so, to me the game doesn't seem outright ugly to me, and that just kinda set me off, that initial comment.
R.O. Bot Cmon is starting to annoy me with their business practices...the moment zombicide green horde closed they already announced a new zombicide...the crap thing about it was I hadn't even rcvd all of the components to the game ! Talk about being greedy !
Personally speaking, this is my favorite review you guys have done in a while - so funny and energetic. Shame this game costs as much as it does - guess we'll have to wait for a budget version of this game.
Finally got around to making a print and play of this. Wooden cubes for containers, lego ships and my own clipart. Especially now its again out of print.
I've kind of love how this review sort of descended into that really pained complaining about a game where you still kind of love it, but it has issues and the only way you can really talk about them is in a way that just feels painful.A great video and I was sort intrigued by the idea of it, the sort of hidden economy stuff seemed interesting, but yes, I feel like you're right that you're literally just paying for big boats. Big bucks for big boats.
I'm really sad that I didn't back this game! It looks really nice. The price tag is around GBP 134 in Norway, so that's even more crazy. I am thinking about buying it anyways, but we'll see! Thanks for the review :)
I was thinking of getting container! So I looked for some reviews! You guys have saved me 90 quid and a lot of heartache! Thank you very much youve got yourself a subscriber! I am not sure you take requests but any chance you could review charterstone? :)
It kinda sucked when I played this with 5 people where only 1 actually knew the game because we quickly ran out of money in the economy. I had an early lead because I invested in a lot of containers expecting the value to go up. But as we ran out of money, the value plummeted, so other players got containers wayyy cheaper and I got passed in points. Still got like second though because a couple of the players were completely out of money with full warehouses by the end. Hopefully it'll go better if we play it again since we actually know some of the things not to do now.
0:08 That will be my reaction when Mount and Blade: Bannerlord will finally release in the year 2099. But change the “5 years” with “an eternity”. Awesome reviews as always!
I bought this 10 years ago and sadly have only got to drag it out once. One of my main players essentially did what this game is for work and the game itself was strangling his joy while at the same time he destroyed everyone at the table. Damn fine game though.
I agree that the price makes this game an indulgence. That said, I owned the original Container (a P500 backer for that as I recall) and it is such a good game that I am prepared to swallow the hit for the knowledge that this is actually a great game. Avoiding buyer's regret has value as all hobby board games are becoming increasingly expensive.
same here. As I recently just purchased FOod chain magnate I can happily wait to get this one at a reasonable price if at all. Though I want to say man the artwork could have been done better.
If your game can remade in twenty minutes with $5 dollars in office supplies, then you need to make the effort to dress it up. With an hour, $10 dollars, and a color printer, anyone could make a game that looks better with personal flair on it too. Imagine an Elite, Eve, or Escape Velocity themed version of this game?
Excellent review, loved the t-shirt reveal. My copy of this is scheduled to arrive on Saturday, and if it does I'll be taking it to game group on Sunday.
$90 price tag aside, this game is pure enjoyment (and chaos) between my friends of gamers. Honestly, if the box-art makes you think "I would enjoy this game.", it's worth the value.
The test for if you'll like this game or not is simple. Do you want to play this game after watching this? My answer is no. And i was super excited to try arkwright after your review.
The cover of this looks like one of those really boring Ravensburger puzzles you find at your grandma's house in a cupboard when bored looking around for something to do, but somehow seems more boring than the nothing you're already doing
I played a game that was like this but more card based. Can anyone help me out? You would bid on goods on boats and you'd be able to upgrade your base with abilities. [Edit] - Import/Export was the game I was thinking about. Nice little game with a similar theme to this.
Please review Axis and Allies Global Edition. It’s huge, tiered units (minimizes luck a bit), historical, and I feel its made with quality. Would love to hear your opinions
It was painful pulling the trigger when I backed this on Kickstarter because the price tag, but honestly, I was frothing from the mouth just from the release of the second addition. When you take into account that the old edition was like $200 online, it isn't that bad. Sure, it could of been better, but I'm just glad it was reprinted.
Great list of games! Star wars is a classic between the wife and I. Summoner Wars is a brain burning battle that we love as well if we have the time. But lately the game that has been really been on the table lately is War Chest. From the makers of Undaunted it is an instant classic in our house
I'm watching this review a mere 18 months after it came out and already it's out of stock again in my country and the prices are through the roof! FLIPPIN' HECK!
You'd have to have enough money to be able to spend a ridiculous amount, which if you're taking containers to the island means you've not only spent your own money to get to that point, it's gone to your opponents, so chances of you being able to easily outbid them are slim.
What a great review! I think since this is the only edition you can buy right now it's probably the right move if you like it. Adding to my wishlist now.
My first thought: "Hey, if you buy my containers at an exorbitant price I'll buy yours at an exorbitant price and we'll both get to abuse the government subsidy fund...." Yay capitalism?
From their blog ''I’ve got to admit, since publishing our review I’ve played Container twice, and both times it wasn’t as fun as I was expecting.'' I think they make reviews based on excitement alone and probably after one time play. Makes you sad and makes you wander. I simply LOVE the game. It is a live organism each time depending on the players.
You think one play is good enough to make them wait 5 years and buy 90$ game so they can show off in their review but don't play it again before publishing the review? That just doesn't make any sense. Opinions aren't permanent and no games guarantee that it will be fun 100% of the time.
@@박찬우-q5m I just think SUSD are very enthusiastic. Most reviewers are. Only Tom Vasel plays the games again anad again and THEN makes a review of them to tell his opinion.
So, depending on what StarQuinns meant by "loss," Matt has lost either €10 or €26. It depends on if they're including the loss of market value on the original Klingon eggs, or are just asking about the difference between the sale price and the purchase price of the new eggs.
I had someone recommend I try this out just this past Saturday... but yeah, not at that price and the description doesn't sound that appealing. I'd definitely need to try it out first before I'd even consider owning it and even if I liked it, that price is the death knell for it, even then.
I feel like I could cobble this game together using what I already have: The cargo cubes and money of Galaxy Trucker, the houses and hotels from monopoly for warehouses/factories, draw up some playerboards and make 4 little ships from empty matchboxes and have a great time. I agree with Matt, the art budget was clearly blown on a 3d artist for the ships and containers, leaving the intern with no graphic design experience to finish the rest unsupervised. I won't buy this as I won't be able to get anyone interested with this art and it's 90 frikin' pounds for such a small number of quality components (compared to the cheaper 878 Vikings). It's sad because this game is mechanically awesome but misses the mark in every other aspect.
In the Spirit of Container. You paid $90 for your container and I’ll buy it from you for $40.
^this!
Looked to the comments to see if there was anything good... stopped after spotting this one because nothing else is going to be as good.
You'll have to ship it yourself though.
Will eBay subsidize it?
More like "I'll pay a 3d printing company 50 dollars"
There are "Homebrew" files for the boards, cards and pieces on board game geek.

This looks like the perfect use of 3D printers.
Dammit they've priced it too high. Who's going to sail into their ports to pick up this game now?
Oh my goodness - I did not see that price coming! With that sort of pricing, the art/components are inexcusable. There are such beautiful games at this price range that this is impossible to justify. I was going to also say no wooden boats were in this game. Perhaps, you are speaking of Manila, another of Delonge's (rip) designs.
Seven minutes in I was thinking "this looks like a nice game for 30€"
Two years later I have finally found a sealed Container copy from 2007. Got it for $35 and couldn't be happier!

Anticipating a renewed surge of popularity for this one.

My first thought: "Hey, if you buy my containers at an exorbitant price I'll buy yours at an exorbitant price and we'll both get to abuse the government subsidy fund...." Yay capitalism?
"Captain, our shields are 100% bad."
From their blog
''I’ve got to admit, since publishing our review I’ve played Container twice, and both times it wasn’t as fun as I was expecting.''
I think they make reviews based on excitement alone and probably after one time play.

Wow why is this so exspensive...would love to buy it.
That photo of Quinns and the power strip killed me!
Sounds awesome, maybe they'll make a print and play, and I can print my own boats as well. As of now the cheapest copy I see is $240.
6:50, the moment it indeed became clear that Matt had gone "all in", auctioning his pants.
