    I tried to explain this to somebody (a black woman) and not only did she debate this fact but when I showed her pictures of black women with long natural hair, she proceeded to tell me they were mixed. Some p people are just ignorant.

Sadly I don't really like talking to black women anymore because the conversation almost always turns to how did i get my hair so long, or is it all mine...i don't even like to wear it out anymore.

    The trick to growing my natural hair from neck length to armpit length was keeping my hair in protective styles at all times, except when it was "wash day". It took 6 years to grow that long, but that's because I didn't start wearing protective styles until only a couple years ago... The less u touch your hair, the more it will grow. So leave your hair alone!

      Gena Gilder. Not true, tangle hair is not soft, that is why your race straighten their hair. Most men prefer soft long hair.

    • @GenaGilder
      @GenaGilder 7 років тому +39

      If afro textured hair is well managed, it is soft. I don't know where you got that idea from. We straighten our hair because we like to see how long it is. We used to chemically, and some still do, straighten our hair to fit in with mainstream society or because we don't like to deal with our hair when it tangles. But I'm 100% sure you only replied to me to be a pendejo and put black women with afro hair down.

      Gena Gilder I don’t have good hair at all . I was natural for 3 years and my hair grew up it wasn’t long you almost have to be naturally for 5 to 6 years to get your hair long . Are hair always grew slower than other races . I never had good hair i wish I did I wish had looser curls because they’re easy to take care then tight curls because it neeeds more moisture and easy to break . I disagree all hair ain’t good hair .

    My hair fell out completely twice within two years, I was diagnosed with lupus. My hair is now to the top of my back, my ponytail is long and what I do is very old school, scalp your hair ladies with grease and use moisturizing oil to keep it moisturized. All the women who grease their hair in my family has hair to their back, we're not mixed either. My hair grew back longer within 2 years now its past my neck about 1/2 inch past the top of my back and its still growing. Black women don't let your hair get dry! We need oil!

    Black women can grow long hair. My mother (RIP) was a dark skinned full black woman. She grew her hair to the middle of her back. I have full black cousins with waist length hair. When I was younger, people thought that my hair was weave or fake because I'm dark skinned and it was below my shoulders. Each person has to find a hair regimen that works for them. All Black people have beautiful hair regardless of length or texture.

    yes some black women can grow long hair as well...but it's all about genetics and as much as we don't want to hear about the word genetics...it has a huge role to play in regards to hair growth rate, length and thickness....there's something called terminal length as well...in which your hair reaches a certain length and then stops.....so yes some black women hair can grow really long but it's all in the persons genes as well.

      ALA LA What do YOU think genetics are? They are NOTHING more than traits passed down from one generation to another.
      What are traits? Habits practiced over such a long period of time that they become inculcated onto genes.
      In other words..do something long enough and your body will start doing it or exhibiting it on its own. AND impressing the commmand sequence for that action on yiur genes..to be passed down.
      So "genetics" is a cop out. If you take care of your hair and your family members do it, your hair WILL grow long and strong..in a few generations, even with neglect, your kids will have long, strong hair, because their hair will respond to the commsnds you instilled. This is how genetics work
      My sister's hair never grew past her neck.
      When it was neck length she thought her hair was long.
      My hair fluctuates between bra strap and hip bone length.
      My sister thought her hair could never, ever grow. I started helping her with her hair.
      She fell off, then really listened. Now her hair is almost to her brs band. After almost 55 years of very short hair.
      Did her genetics change?
      No sis, her hair care and knowledge did.

    I'm a black man who was raised by black women so I don't need to watch this video to know why black women's hair grows slow or not at all...... All you have to do to get your hair to grow is not put relaxer or texturizer in it... once you put those chemicals in your hair it dries your scalp and damages your hair follicles so your hair grows slower than it normally would.
    most black women don't know that because they start using relaxer so early in life that they never got to see how fast their natural hair would've grown if they had never put relaxer in it.
    just look at black men who grow long hair: their hair always grows way longer than black women's hair because most black men who grow out their hair don't put relaxer in it because they are not embarressed to be seen with their natural hair in public.

    Breanna, I appreciate the time you take in presenting your information concerning hair care and various hair styles so professionally. God bless you in your endeavors. I believe it does not matter if you wear your natural hair, braids, or a weave, it is important to remember to take care of your natural hair as well as the extensions. Black people are not the only ones that wear weave. If you take a look at a lot of old movies with White actresses even to date they too where weaves and extension in their hair. Even on UA-cam you can find tutorial with Whites and other ethnic groups adding weave and extension to their hair. I will rock my natural, braids, or a weave it doesn't mean I hate my race or I am trying to be like another race or that I don't take care of my natural hair. It is actually fun wearing different styles, colors, or length without having to put all the stress on my own hair. It is no different than rocking your own sense of clothing style...as long as you are happy with who you are that is what is most important...we should embrace, encourage, and respect one another as oppose to attempting to degrade or belittle one another...If your hair is long, short, straight, coily, kinky, or you have no hair at all be confident in what you do and don't let anyone steal your joy or your shine...Peace and Blessings to all!!!

Yet all the women on her side of the family mostly have huge afros, or middle back length, waist length, or long dreadlocks.. it all depends on genetics, health, and what fits or works out for you. I'd use the wild growth oil. It speeds and helps out with hair growth. I have 3a/b type hair that used to be to my knees until I kept using heat to look more... Well... *WHITE* But now I'm embracing my curls and it's to my middle back now. The wile growth oil works out a lot 👍😊

    Wow I found out that I have 4c hair, very kinky and curly dry looking and it grows faster when I have it in braids or protective hair styles. Right now I'm rocking the big chop and it's growing now since I did the big chop and waited until I got all the chemicals out now it's time for braids. Every since doing the LOC method my hair grew better. Thank you

    OK this is what I think. I agree with everything u said. And basically black hair can grow just as fast and as long as any other race of ppl(duh right!?) But its just harder and requires more work to grow the length and actually keep the length

    • @TheQueenPsChannel
      @TheQueenPsChannel 6 років тому

      Meow Gatita I don’t agree that it requires more work. There are black people with 3c/4a hair textures that don’t have the same hair regimen that I have as a 4c. It’s not more work at all, you have to know your own hair. For example, since I am a 4b/4c I know my hair thrives with moisture and being stretched which lessens the opportunity of single strand knots. I also know my hair is low porosity which means I have to make sure I use steam or some sort of heat to open my cuticles so that my products penetrate my hair strands. That’s information I know off the bat, so since I know this information I can now design a regimen. To flip this, if I am a 3c gal with high porosity hair I know that one my curl pattern is looser and that my cuticles need to be closed with a cool water rinse or cold products to seal in my moisture. Because I know my hair I can now develop a regimen. So don’t say it requires more work because even those looser textures require learning about your hair so that you’re not doing a 4c regimen on a 3a type of hair, it wouldn’t work and the 3a would have major product build up or have to wash much more frequently. Also, regular trimming is required for all hair textures to thrive, because it’s no use in having long hair with 4 inches of heat damaged hair right? When people say type 4 hair is “hard” it means they don’t know how to take care of that type of hair and are still in a learning phase. Don’t forget there is a different between fine, normal, and coarse hair textures, this also plays a part in how the hair grows. Fun fact and then I’m finished, most black people have a type 4 kinkier hair texture than the looser traces ellis Ross type. I emplore you to get educated on your hair and I promise once you have been educated on your hair you can develop a regimen and see results with a regimen designed to fit your hair. Good luck.

    I’m a retired hairstylist and I’m so glad you are explaining our hair growth. Knowing how to care for your own hair is important. Our hair grows out and straight hairs grown down. There’s to many African American who relax and burn out their hair and wearing braids and weaves too tight has destroyed so many WOC’s hair. I’m not a weave or braid wearer and never have been. The last time I wore a wig was 1970! And my last chemical treatment was over 25 years ago. I really hated hearing Black clients talk about their nappy, not growing, burned out in the back hair as not being good hair. I tried being very frank without being rude or blunt but so many women would say ‘oh Kay I won’t, and yes I’m hearing you and I’ll be back in ex amount of weeks. Next time they come in, same thing with an excuse. I got so I would just hold up my hand and proceed with whatever she was paying me to do. Again, thank you for your information and I’m sincerely hoping that women take this info and digest it B4 they buy that boxed relaxer from Walmart. Take care,

    People have hair that is conducive to their environment. Most black people are from Africa and not only their hair, but their bodies are built for hunting. It's purely genetic. White people come from Europe where the sun doesn't shine too much hence the fair skin. Brazilians are in warmer weather hence their skin color. We are all the same, but our bodies just adjust to the environment we're living in.

    I am so glad to see you make this video because there is so much ignorance about black hair......i am bi racial and my hair grows relatively slow. I didn't really see much growth until I started sealing my hair with coconut oil and trimming my ends. I got so tired of telling folks that when the media portrays that straight hair or curly hair is better it causes hatred between light skin and dark skin girls instead of teaching them all hair is good hair if it's healthy hair.

    Everyone can grow their hair long! :D
    I've met an Australian who was half Chinese and half Russian
    Her hair was long, I think down to her chest, but she said it took her five years to get that length after having chopped off most of it. My hair is barely two years natural, and I'm already close to her length (when straightened). So I feel like no matter if your hair is the straightest or the kinkiest, it doesn't really affect your hair growth. That depends on genetics and length retention.
    I really like your vids. You make very good points, and I love your fro. It just shapes your face so well!

    This was very informative. I've always been sort of interested in the nature of black hair. And because I don't have any close friends that are A.A., I don't really have the opportunity to be exposed to that education.
    And asking always seems to be such a sensitive thing for people like me who have the only best of intentions of just learning about something about other people that I don't have experience with, and not coming from a negative place with my curiosities without mistakingly being accused of something that is the farthest from my mind.
    Looking forward to checking out more of your videos.

    Black women can have long hair. The problem is acclimating the hair to look European and not knowing our true texture. We have been brainwashed to assume our hair is bad. Stop messing with the hair. Ditch the perms, weaves, and excessive traction on the roots and the hair will grow. Some of us are blessed to have a long anogen phase (growing) but cant appreciate it due to poor maintenance and using products not meant for their hair texture. Notice other women in other cultures how long their hair is! They do not obsess over it. Even our ancestors that designed beautiful hairstyles, their hair grew long because it was consistent with their texture. No outlier regimen that stresses the hair to baldness.

    Did you know ??. Instead of using harsh shampoos on your hair you can also use aloe vera gell for that very same purpose. Dilute jell from plant leaf into a few cups of warm water, massage vigorously into hair and scalp, once hair is covered it feels soapy, lèave in for as long as you're comfortable, cover using your shower cap because it can be a bit messy, rinse and towel dry..(done).. lol enjoy your beautiful, shiney, luscious hair also if you add 1 tsp of jell or less into a glass of ice cold water you can have a nourishing drink while waiting 😄👋👋. Bye Bye to pimples hello to beautiful, skin, Hair and nails as well.

      Lots of women have iron deficiencies due to having periods, and low iron levels stops hair from growing. They go to a medical doctor who says their iron levels are OK but what the doctor can't tell them is that for optimal hair growth you need to be at the top part of the range for iron measures particularly ferritin. The reason for this is some people have diseases where too much iron is dangerous but this ignores the majority of the population that doesn't have this problem.

    I want to know do u agree with the term Nappy to describe our hair? This is a subgect that bugs me. I had a long debate on it just yesterday.

    • @jsfavours
      @jsfavours 10 років тому +12

      I believe it is the connotation in which "nappy" is used. When I hear/use the word my first thought is coily. However, if I hear someone else who doesn't have this texture of hair or may be referring to "nappy" hair I think of it as condescending. Some women LOVE their NAPPY HAIR, some hate to even be considered as having "nappy hair." So, I would say it's a very subjective view. I say if you like it, own it. If not, don't be upset with it just own your own description.

    • @jsfavours
      @jsfavours 10 років тому +19

      Nappy does not mean dry. If you don't know the definition please educate yourself on the term. Nappy is a term that was socially developed to described "tightly coiled or unaltered hair."
      However, if you believe that "nappy" is synonymous with "dry" then this proves my point that the meaning is subjective. Subjective means that your definition is based on your personal opinion.

    • @jsfavours
      @jsfavours 10 років тому +8

      In regards to agreeing with the term, I'm indifferent. The only issue I have is when people use it to demean women who have "naturally nappy" hair.

    • @1JewelOfTheNile
      @1JewelOfTheNile 10 років тому +21

      Nappy truly means uncombed, unkempt hair. Therefore, really any ethnic group can have nappy hair. I've seen this first hand. However, the term originated as a slur to describe slave hair (blacks) because we obviously weren't allowed to bring our styling methods when we were forced here to the Americas. So no, I don't agree with the term, it really should be extinguished.

    • @imadiva4evers
      @imadiva4evers 10 років тому +3

      GratefulJewel GJ It really depends how use you use the term, to me, nappy means Afro hair in it's natural coily state. Also, when people make fun of my hair by call it nappy, they're kinda using the word in a different meaning. Ain't nothing wrong with nappy hair, since I was a child, my hair has always been nappy even when it wasn't tangled. Even now, when my hair is relaxed, people still refer to my hair as nappy, even though it's untangled. When people use the term 'nappy' in a negative way, their usually referring to the texture of your hair. Your hair can still be kept and combed, and still be called nappy by people.

    I believe in evolution and the reason why black people hair cant really grow long is becaue black people used to live in Africa and they had short hair so they weren’t hot meanwhile people with long hair needed it for cold environments

      I lived in Los Angeles for many years. My next door neighbor used potatoes to straighten her hair. Peeled and sliced and some how used the juices to get it straighten. She and her daughters had long hair.

    Breanna the reason or the cause why Black people's hair doesn't go as long or as fast as the other nations is because the black woman who is the real Jew or Israelite woman of the bible has been cursed by God along with our brothers for not keeping the Laws And Commandments of Our Heavenly Father. If you read Isaiah 3:16 "Moreover The Lord saith, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they as they go and making a tinkling with their feet 17, Therefore The Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion......"

      Oh please, the reason black people especially Bantus from the equator have short hair is due to genetics from climate to help survive in humid, hot weather, the natural reaction is for cuticles to curl up top, to prevent overheating. Same thing with Melanin for better vitamin D absorption. Got it?

      Paula Baird no black people have long hair if they take care of it and some of them cut it because it is to hot!! So what did you just come up with???

      When we blame God for what we consider a problem, we disrespect the magnificent design of our Creator. God said that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. Women of African decent, please Stop comparing your Beauty to other Races. We who Believe are God’s chosen. Sisters, Love yourself without feeling like there is something wrong with you or your unique Beauty. Sisters, Love you! God is not punishing you. The Devil is a Liar and Self Hater’s are even worse.

      I am Religious, but I personally Love God far too much to blame Him for the texture of my Hair. He chose my Patents, I can chose my style. This is the type of thinking that holds us back as African American Women trying to achieve success. You cannot be sitting at the Head Table in a Board Room of a Fortune 500 Company worried about your Nappy Hair. You Better Be so Fierce, you better know how to work it. You better set the trend so that they will want to copy you. Be above and not beneath. Be The Head and not the Tail. People who have backward type, Plantations thinking will always be facing the rear.

    It grows at the same pace as most in each race.
    Black or type 4 hair has the least amount of keratin layers (aka enamel layers) so it is easier to damage and break.
    What affects growth? Improper care, improper nutrition, keeping hands in the hair, using destructive chemicals or hair accoutrements like fake braids, wigs and weave which can cause or contribute to friction, pressure, traction alopecia.
    #1 cause of slow hair growth is breakage from overuse if heat, products, chemicals, weave and too much manipulation.
    Hair grows best when it is left alone.

      Bad haircuts suck, but don't stress over it! It eventually grows to a length that you can use to cover up the bad cut

    • @TRUTHTEACHER2007
      @TRUTHTEACHER2007 8 років тому +2

      It itches because your scalp gets dry. You need to keep your hair moisturized. A water and glycerine mix with a bit of oil is good, creamy leave in conditioners with some oil like castor oil on damp hair will help.
      For itchy scalp I make a mixture of black Jamaican Castor Oil, peppermint and a bit of tea tree oil. I put it in an applicator bottle and put it on my scalp and massage it in after I wash my hair. I follow up maybe once more in the middle of the week.

    +breanna rutter What is your view on hair grease? I've heard contradictory things about using it to keep your scalp moisturized but it also breaks off your hair. I recently stopped using it to see if it makes a difference but I haven't noticed any changes other than dry hair, and even the oils (coconut and olive) I've been using don't keep my hair moisturized like actual grease. What's your opinion?

    • @Ashanti_flower24
      @Ashanti_flower24 8 років тому +9

      Because oils don't moisturise hair, it seals moisture, water and leave in's moisturise hair but personally I don't think there's anything wrong with grease if it works for you

    god made us including our hair the way he intended for us to be, we are not to question it, other races are extremely jealous of black woman especially. we have been given a gift as well as black men and that is, multiple hair textures that we have to just be patient and figure out how to manage the beauty of it, as well as our multiple completions. love what god gave you and the answers will come.
