It has been really fun to hear what your 2021 goals are. I've got some ambitious followers and I LOVE IT!! Let me know what your goal is / how it's going on Instagram. DM me here: instagram.com/nicksymmonds
Hey Nick, I have been running for a year and a half and I am about to turn 12. My goal is to run a 5k in under 20 minutes.Right now I can do a 5k in 21:30. do you think this is a good goal? love your videos!!!
Nice! That's a really good goal! My goal is to run a 10K in under 40 minutes in around two months. Just remember not to rush getting faster. Make sure you have some easy jogging days in your training so that your body can recover after your more difficult runs. Good luck!!!
I discovered your channel back in 2019 and began my running journey at the start of 2020. I kid you not I was only able to run .32 of a mile a little over a quarter of a mile and by then My chest would be hurting that I’d have to stop. Cut to present time I now can run 53 miles a week. I weighed 208 the start of 2020 and I now weight 161 and I have also done weight training. It all starts with baby steps 💪🏽.
My New Years resolution was to run LESS!! Ran 10 miles every day the last couple months and it was just a little too much. Back at 8-9 miles a day and feeling much better already!
How did your diet influence your performance and endurance?? Did you eat more greens (plant-based) or meats?? Id love a youtube video explaining this. Thanks Nick. Btw, that’s super awesome that you give away shoes every week! I really wanna be blessed with some new shoes:)
Hey Nick, I was a competitive swimmer and I switched into casual running in college. I have the endurance to run longer distances, but maybe you could make a video about how to listen to your body better as a runner. I struggle to understand when I need to stop working out because I have a stress fracture, or if I’m just sore. I had a stress fracture and fully recovered a couple months ago.
Thanks Nick! I unfortunately learned this the hard way. 2020 was my first XC season, I started out by running 40 miles a week as a freshman in high school at the beginning of the summer. I was able to maintain this for about a month until I developed bad shin splints. I was out of practice for weeks and when I finally got back I was only able to do about 2 miles a day. I feel like my season would have been a lot more successful if I would have known these things in advance. Anyway I plan to use this advice in my upcoming track season and future XC season. Thanks for everything you do nick, you truly inspire the younger generations to work harder and smarter. 👍🙂
The importance of consistency is what I learned from my failures last year. I started running to improve my swimming and turned out to be pretty good at it last year but wasn’t consistent enough when I finished the year. My goal this year is to run 5 minutes everyday and to run a total of 1200 miles this year to achieve my goal of sub 11 2 mile.
Don't run sub 5 every day that is not good, you need to have days with high mileage, and shorter faster days, like running a progression 7-mile run, and working down on that workout to a sub-five mile
@@runforrestrun7112 you misunderstood. I said 5 minutes everyday minimum not sub 5 normally. Some days will be long runs, some hill repeats, some interval workouts, some fartleks.
I ran a 19:32 in the last meet of fall XC as a freshman in high school. Never ran that fast again! Now I am 30! Got to appreciate and take advantage of your youth while you have it! I am slowly working back at it though.
Also something I learned... Run slow to run fast. When I first started running last year, I felt like I had to push it to the limit every time. I learned quickly that this was the wrong mentality lol
I'm coming back from a bad case of plantar fasciitis. It was so painful that I saw an orthopedist to make sure it wasn't a stress fracture. In additional to doing the exercises, I've implemented a better strategy for increasing mileage / duration. It's all based on how long after a run it takes for the foot to feel good again. If it feels good within a few hours of the run, I'm OK to add 5 minutes to the same run the following week. I'm around 7 miles for my long run and feeling great. For now, my goal is to run a half marathon this November. I'd like to work back up to another marathon (I've done 2), but that will take longer. Great video!
I completely agree. I always thought that consistency is the most important thing in running. Thank you for explaining this so well! Also my goal is to make it to 70 miles a week but I just want to slowly increase my mileage. Hopefully I'll get there in March but I don't want to rush it. Your running videos are super helpful!
I just want to be able to compete. Had a jump meet scheduled but we went back into lockdown 2 days before. My training runs for track have been great, but need the real deal, not this virtual stuff we have had to try to get our competitive fix with.
This was a very educational video. My track and field coaches should really watch this. I’m in 10th grade and I had an injury to my hip from running XC and I took off three months before track. The first day of track/field the coach made us run about five miles straight off the bat. Now everyone is very sore.
This is such great advice which I new this in the summer when I was training for xc but oh well, I used to train so inconsistently but now I know how to train and create that base to then build up more mileage and add speed or tempos as well
My body is like a machine, I don’t get painfully sore just numbing sore and I still have enough energy to go out running the next day. I’ve been running 5 miles once every Sunday and then on the weekdays I do workouts during cross country or track
I'm a freshman in hs and I run the 1600 and the 800. I'm new to training this hard, and just new to a serious team in general. my PR for the 800 is 3:41 and 7:33 for the 1600 (definitely pretty BAD lmao, but I'm still a freshman so I'm still working). I'm trying to get to 3:10 and 7:00, but my form kinda sucks and I need more muscle. any tips?
Hey nick I'm 13 and in the swiss championships I am aiming to run a sub 16:30 min 5k in March but I am a little afraid of to injur myself before so I'm not quite sure what to do
I listened to Nick and tried out the Brooks ELMN8. *You need to give them a shot* trust me. My first and only race last year was wearing them. And I actually tied my PR.. at the first race of the season. Hell of a shoe in my opinion
To all the runners who put a lot of tension on their arms by clinching their fist while running: put the tip of your thumb on the first bump of your index finger and you can put all the pressure in the world and never mess up your form from arm tension.
Disclaimer, I’m no coach. But around 25-30 would probably be good if your body can handle it, certainly no more than around 35. But of course, ask your coach and ultimately do what they tell you too. And don’t do more than what you can comfortably do on a weekly basis.
I'm not new to running, but I'm new to the style of training I've started to do for the past few weeks. I'm doing quality over quantity. So it's not the highest mileage. Only 20-30 miles/week. I'm doing mostly Aerobic workouts. Is this a good way to train?
You definitely can! A few months of smart consistent training while listening to your body if you need to back off, and you’ll be able to break that mark!
At 14 I started training daily and after about 6 months I did my first mile tt since before I started and I pr-ed by a minute, went from 6:25 to 5:35. You can do it with consistency!
at the beginning of quarantine I was running 5 to 7 miles a day and I was in tip top shape, then I lost the motivation and I also hurt my knee and I just started running again and I'm running a mile and a half a day right now to get in shape, I had my track season, xc season and possibly even this upcoming track season canceled and I'm trying sooo hard to get my motivation back
This is great advice of course. But, also ironic, because you did a fitness challenge where you did max reps every day for 30 days for Gymshark haha. You need to apply this advice to your workouts too, not just running. Don't do max reps every day.
haven't watched the video yet but I bet I'm doing some of these mistakes (been running for almost 3/4 of a year) edit: yup, I do... kinda. hopefully with track season starting i can get more consistent
