DIATHERMY: Types, Benefits & Risks - Dr. Gary Sy

DIATHERMY THERAPY is the use of high electrical current to produce heat. The word "diathermy" comes from the Greek "dia" meaning "through" and "thermo" meaning "heat". It refers to a method of delivering core warming to deep body tissue for therapeutic purposes that effectively warm from within rather than from the outside. Heat increases blood flow and makes connective tissue more flexible. It decreases joint stiffness, pain and muscle spasms. And it also helps reduce inflammation and the buildup of fluid in tissues (edema). Heat therapy is used to treat inflammation (including various forms of arthritis), frozen shoulder, muscle spasm and injuries such as sprains and strains.
