This was really helpful! Much easier to digest than the 1-2 hour videos that B&H usually posts. Maybe it's psychological, but I'd rather watch six 10 minute videos than one 1 hour video.

You bouncing a little bit behind tip was great. I had issues with changing the direction of the flash head as soon as the subject turned to the sides but now I understand what I can do to overcome it. Many thanks.
Great video!!! May i ask, at what power do you typically shoot your flash at when its mounted and you're bouncing it? Is there sort of a standard that you hold to, or do you adjust up and down as needed?

Your use of the flash is art, you can argue the merits of natural verses artificial light all day, but art is art. You wouldn't look at a painting of a peacock and say it's not very good because they chose to use a peacock quill instead of a brush....... Stunning photos, I learnt a lot.

Is it worth buying a wireless trigger system for my speedlight? That why I can hold it with my free hand and angle it how I want? Or would it be a better idea to just keep the speedlight on top of the camera and rotate the head?
Yes, buying a wireless trigger for your flash would be worth it, since you can have TTL or manual control off camera. What many people do is have one flash on the camera with a trigger while another flash is set off camera as a fill light. arun siddharth No, I am sorry. High Speed Sync [HSS] is not possible in manual flash operation. Chuck
arun siddharth if you're using a NIKON Speedlight, the Auto FP setting can be used in manual power mode. Just have a look at Dave Black's Workshop At The Ranch tutorials.
Great video. I have a couple of questions. Which video or continuous light do you recommend based on budget for portraits and weddings? How do you avoid your backlight setup from showing up in the shot?
James Williams If you notice in the video, for several photos, Ryan Brenizer is posing his subjects directly in front of the light source, so the subjects themselves hide the light source. There are other instances where the back light is blowing out the background, in which case it cannot be viewed. As he says, ?back light can be effective? if you have the flash placed carefully.? As for a budget friendly video/continuous light, it?s difficult to make the best recommendation not knowing which camera you have and roughly what your budget is. That being said, for off camera use, you might look at the Genaray SpectroLED Essential 240 Bi-Color LED Light with Stand and Accessories. ...nobody teaches this and it's soooo frustrating to me. I know my way around a camera pretty well, but some of these more technical types of tricks and effects are things I still have yet to conquer and really figure out. THANK YOU soooo much for doing this for us!! I would sure give the world for you to also do a couple of videos teaching us how to photograph sparkler exits, light trails with wedding reception dance photos, how to photograph those cigar smoke photos of the guys on wedding day, and how to get that hair spray shot when the bride is getting ready. I'd also love to learn how to do some of those trick photos that so many of you do on wedding days - the reflection, shooting through things, bokeh lights, ring shots with an extra fun flair, etc. A super fun photographer that does a lot of this stuff is Jason Martin with Concept Photography. This guy has some super cool photography tricks and effects and I still have yet to figure out how he does a lot of them.

7:22, by moving a light closer you make it softer?
Absolutely. The size of the light relative to the subject is increased and is therefore softer - like going from a small softbox to a large softbox..
Yes. Most people think that the closer the light the harsher it is because it's stronger. Well it is stronger but as Nick says, softness of your light depends on the size of the light source relative to the subject. The bigger the light source, the softer it is. The closer the light source is to your subject, the bigger the light source is :). While you probably need to lower the power of the light source, it is softer.
Hi any suggestion how I can improve battery life on my flashes. I have Yongnuo flashes and I'm using them a the lowest setting only getting 20-30 shoots also using the highest mah rechareables

fus iontherapy use panasonic eneloops. There the best rechargeables there are.
What type of Speedlights should I get for my Nikon D3100?

Daphne Long It's called Parallax. It's basically separate layers moving at varying speeds to give this kind of effect. I'm sure you can find out how to do this with After Effects with a quick search.

Thanks for the tip! AGH I'm learning how to shoot with flash and I'm still like... wha?
When I was trying to shoot again the sun to overpower it with my 600EX-RT, the photo came out so dark. Almost as if the flash didn't work. Even at full power. I wanted to capture the blue skies with dramatic clouds and light up my subjects. Was it my settings or the fact that my flash was about 6 ft away from them? And yes it was in high speed sync.
+frankiecoldmedina Ideally you would not want your flash set to high speed sync as this will diminish the light reaching your subject. Rather you would have your shutter speed set to the maximum sync speed with the camera manual mode. The max sync speed will vary by camera, but is usually 1/200th or 1/250th of a second. Once you have that variable set, you would set your exposure for your background/sky, with the sun behind your subject, adjusting the aperture and ISO as needed. Once your background exposure has been set, you would then manually adjust the power of your flash to achieve the desired results. I would recommend starting about 1/4th power and moving up or down from there. *Andrea

I have shot over 20 wedding and never used a speed light ! Natural light is always best if you ask me.

Jason Sturgess I always find it odd how many people say that using strobes of any kind or artificial light period is a big no no for weddings, yet at night even my fastest $3k lens cant take the best pics without some type of lighting being used to properly light the subjects unless I want a dark picture
+Jason Sturgess I do so agree with you!! when I shoot weddings I don`t want all the people look at me when they see the flashes go on and off.. So funny to see the uncles who photograph as a hobby to come over and tell me that probably all my pics will be ruined because it`s too dark inside, and then the couple sees the pics and say: it`s pure art :)
Outdoor Pat Spot on Pat - loads of people seem to think that , if you don't have flash then the images will be dark , you can't use flash in a church anyway , well I've never been aloud to - I have always just bumped up the ISO to 1600 +
+Jason Sturgess or even more, on my last shoot the party was in a cave, very nice location but only lit by candles (loads of them) bumped up the ISO even to 4000 and converted the pics in an nice grainy black and white, couple and family loved the pics! Can`t image me tossing around several flash guns on a wedding pulling all the attention to me instead of the couple.

If you knew how to use off camera flash in manual mode you would get high quality, lower iso and accurate colour.

Oh, you know nothing..
That way the light gets reflected off whatever surface it hits, which diffuses the light, making it seem much more natural. It's not possible everywhere though. If the surface you're bouncing the light off is too dark (e.g. dark wood, stone or paint), it may not reflect enough light onto the subject, or if the surface is too far away (e.g. in a large hall or a church).
