I have a friend, he's government officer. This is what he told me. Even if the doesn't want to take bribe, he's forced to take it by the senior officers and even by auditors. Auditors say if you won't take bribe, how would you give it to us. It's hard to be dirt free in the government services, believe it or not. ****Edit**** One more thing - He always refuses to take bribe or 'cut'. But he has to at some point, knows it well. And we always suggest him to take it from companies that take tender etc.. and use that amount for the betterment of the village area where he works. Nothing is white or black today, it's all shades of grey.

Reading the comments made me even more proud of my grandfather. An honest man who lived his life with dignity and happiness. He could have decided to give his children a better luxurious future like his friends but chose not to. The result is that even after almost 15 years of his death, people around me still talk about how much of a good man he was. Some may think that not doing "a crime" is a bare minimum and I agree it is but being in position where u can easily climb the ladder of richness and yet chose not to is hard specially when knowing that most of the people (colleagues) don't even think it as something bad. You are overreacting....most of them are honest, some are curropt...But let me tell you one thing before you come to any conclusion... Let me tell you it is not an easy going job, they work a lot harder than you would have even imagined. Not just the official work, they have to literally handle even the smallest issue in district. It is not easy at all... sometimes they don't come to home for like approx. 3 days due to the workload. It's not just the district they have to handle, but the ministers, finances, schemes, panchayat, courts and the list doesn't ends... And before you say - come on, it's their job and they all are getting free money, it's not. They work hard than most of you to earn every single penny. When you pay so little to someone with such a responsibility job, dealing with unimaginable amount of resources. You can’t expect them to get corrupt along the way. In fact in China & many asian countries, governments intentionally pay less to their workforce because they know employees will resort to corruption & governments can get away with paying next to nothing.
House in posh areas, house maintainence, house helps, car fuel costs ariund 1.5 lakh to 2 lakh in metro cities so actually an ias officer is earning around 3 4 lakhs depending on the location. As that 1 or 1.5 lakh salary is their savings basic expenses are done vy the government
In my city there is posh road with big and beautiful bunglows on both sides. All bunglows are owned by IAS/IPS officers. Big celebrities are unable to afford bunglows there

Particular to real estate,BDO(Block Development officer)is the first stage from where it all starts.
Almost all the officers acts as a broker between real estate mafias and land owners.
Officers tip real estate mafias to purchase land where development is proposed.(metros,ring roads).And they purchase the land before the news gets out in public.in return they earn commissions from both parties and later a hefty percentage from real estate mafias when they sell this same land to government.
This is just about real estate.there are many more such areas where they have lot of scope.

Ek IAS,say a collector when posted in a district,he gets a fixed commission of 10% without asking the contractor who is undergoing various govt project.Even a small district gets funds of crores in a year under various schemes so one can imagine how much these collectors are earning.Salary is just an icing on cake .And if a collectors ask for commission for more than 10% then he may get an enormous amount.

@@priyadarshinithewriter Academics alone doesn't make a person better and you can't just generalize all politicians to be 12th fail. Even the court can’t suspend an IAS officer, President has to view the case and take action.
