What bothered me most was Arya. In the book she is a stubborn bad ass elf warrior but was turned into a generic princess for the movie. The fight scene with her was forced. Plus she was really good with magic. This and the lack of dwarfs ruined this movie for me.

"It was rumored that the dwarves would not appear in the Eragon movie and *this is true in a certain sense, as the dwarves in the Eragon movie are human-sized instead of being short people*. This, however, is relatively unnoticed next to the other huge changes like Durza riding a shadow dragon"

+Anthony Nunez I think it's easily possible. A few things that irritated me was the fact the elves and dwarves were completely cut out, arya was human (the worst offense if you ask me because she's one of my personal favorites of the whole series), the ending battle was cool but completely wrong, I could go on for days but if they stick to the book it'd be fantastic to see on screen

Wasn’t Galbatorix driven insane by the death of his Dragon? The whole reason he began to hate the other Dragon Riders was that they refused to give him another dragon egg. That was mentioned in the book, so I’m surprised the exposition didn’t mention that.
Also, Saphira suddenly becoming an adult... no. They literally fast-forwarded their bonding.

    • @Lucy666Fernandez
      @Lucy666Fernandez 4 роки тому +13

They probably meant to add that in the sequel ;D
And yeah, I'm still upset that they didn't bother to spend even 10 minutes on her growing up for such a long time. In that case I would've even been fine with a little bit of exposition to summise some of the time they can't show.

Starting with a history lesson. Galbatorix is just plain evil instead of being driven mad due to losing his dragon. No elves, dwarves and technically no urgals either. The king referring to Saphira's egg as a `stone`. Durza creating Ra'zac with a spell. Ra'zac look like zombies. Eragon doesn't recognize a dragon when he sees one. Everyone somehow knows the dragon has hatched. Saphira's got feathers and evolves like a Pokémon. The deep and beautiful emotional bond between a dragon and its rider reduced to `I protect you to protect myself`. Eragon immediately off to the Varden instead of following Ra'zac to avenge his uncle. Angela is utterly boring and completely forgettable instead of the charming, witty and wild enchantress she's supposed to be. Twins, Solembum and Elva don't exist. Arya is concious during the escape and Brom's death (which she as a skilled sorceress does nothing about) and extremely awkwardly falls for Eragon. Durza has a spell to create a dragon up his sleeve. Eragon has no injury to heal in Ellesméra. CHEESUS CRUST WHAT IS THIS BLASPHEMY?!

You know, call me crazy, but I still have an appreciation for the book. Yes, it's not the greatest fantasy story of our time, but the author's age when he began writing it, and still managed to craft a decent story, made me think that I could do it too. It's what inspired me to start writing.

He didn't just have a stick on his chest! Saphira had to help Eragon remove rubble to even find him!!!...and Snowfire is WHITE!! AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!! and Eragon gets captured and drugged for several days in Gil'ead. And why is Arya awake the whole way to Farthen Dur? Hello?!?!?!? In the book, this adds a great deal of information about mental interaction between two minds. I liked Murtagh here...sort of. He didn't contribute much, but I think with some coaching, he could have grew into the part. They also could have developed the dwarves more, especially ORIK?? WHERE WAS HE??? And Nasuada? Wow...she needs a metric shit ton of character development to grow into the role she plays in the other books. To defend Eragon, (or rather his actor, which I can't remember his name) he could have done the whole series, in my opinion. with help. What in the hell was Durza riding on? Really...? Ugh. WHERE ARE THE TWINS?!?!?!?! HUGE MISSING PIECE!!!! and Shurikuan is about 200 times larger than Saphira, since I am being an ass about this. Yes, many of these things wouldn't matter that much in the movie, if they had done it right, but since they fucked it up so much, I get the right to complain about it ALL!!! HAHAHAH!!!!

I see what you mean about some company "shitting out" a movie for profit when the book was already known and fairly popular. It's kind of like how EA sports "shit out" Madden 06 for Xbox 360 claiming the graphics and the sound would blow you away and they may have but the game-play was just horrendous. That's similar to how this movie excels at having visually impressive computer generated special effects, (especially with Saphira), but the story was cheaply written, was equally disappointing and barely compared to the book's story line if at all.

I think with the gedwëy ignesia, they made it resemble the lowercase letter "e", for Eragon in the movie. And Eragon and Arya never do end up as a couple officially, because she always rebuffs his romantic advances. I was also hugely disappointed about Galbatorix. The whole idea behind him not showing up in the books until the very end of Brisingr, (but mostly Inheritance), is that you have this phantom-like presence of Galbatorix constantly lurking over the characters in the books. The reader of the book also wants to finally catch a glimpse of Galbatorix, and the suspense keeps building and building until he finally appears. That was the whole point of not introducing him until later on, to build that fear and suspense of this powerful ruler that we haven't even heard speak one line in the first two books. But it makes it so much better when he finally does show up, and to introduce him in the movie so soon, right off the bat, is horrendous.

Jeremy Irons was great in his role, Carlyle appropiately creepy in his, Saphira looks awesome and Patrick Doyle's musical Score is awesome. That aside... I watched it before reading the book and thought it was... okay as a stand-alone Movie. But as an adaptation, its a complete miss.
To its credit, there is ONE Scene that is an actual improvement: Saphira carrying Brom as he was dying. That *was* a nice touch.

+Curtis Yue From what I understand, Paolini is a Lord of The Rings fan and he admits being inspired by it when writing Eragon, which I find wonderful and still original enough. And that's exactly what I expected from the movie, maybe that's why I was so disappointed by it

  • @artywolve
    @artywolve 8 років тому +93

There are about three or four locations just completely skipped, and not to mention the half dozen characters. I mean, without Katrina Roran (who barely exists) has no reason to lead the village to the other edge of the continent and become the bearded hammer man. I think because there was such a lot going on in the book due to travelling round NW Alagaesia they would have been better off splitting the book into multiple films. I think we're all just hoping they might remake it. Well, hopefully not the same people though.
I was really sad about the removal of the enormous gem that Arya and Saphira smash at the end to save Eragon, but I think what pisses me off the most is the fact that they thought it would be "interesting" if the elves had human ears, aka, we're so cheap we can't afford the prosthetics to make them pointy..

Murtagh is my favorite character and they completely and utterly destroyed him. There are certain things that bother me (like the fact that he has light eyes in the movie when Paolini referenced them as brown, but that's minor) more than others, but the fact that they completely breezed over his tortured past really burned me up. They need to do a remake, and have it follow the plot/character development of the book practically verbatim. Eragon fans deserve another shot after this abomination.
P.S. Murtagh's scar placement gets me too. DX

To add how Dragon is different, Galbotorix, if you read the book, was driven angry by the death of his dragon. He did not 'sense' the weakness as the movie puts it. There are much greater forces than a farm boy and a dragon and some rebels.

    >saphira was a long-necked bird with feathers rather than a legit dragon with gem scales
    >they killed the ra'zac which don't actually die until the beginning of the third book
    >urgals didn't have horns
i could probably come up with more you didn't mention if i had seen the movie and read the books more recently.
in my opinion, the movie was good in its own right, but only if you change the names of everything and make it have no connection to the books whatsoever. The video game was fairly decent too.
fun fact: paolini said that at some point there was an offer on the table for him to be an urgal in the last battle and that eragon would cut his head off and hold it very dramatically, but that didn't end up happening because of scheduling conflicts as he was on tour for eldest at the time.

God, I hate this movie. The original Eragon is one of my favorite books ever, and outside of the final book's lackluster ending, all of the Inheritance Cycle is amazing. This movie barely followed the plot of the book at all, yet spent none of the time where it wasn't following the book developing the characters. Saphira looks barely anything like how she's described in the book (and how she's depicted on the GODDAMN COVER), and the acting is just plain awful. The film also cut so much out that it is literally impossible to make Eldest a movie without remaking Dragon first.
Honestly, if they DO remake Eragon, it should be as a Games of Thrones-style TV series, with as much time as is needed for adapting the plot and characters of four incredibly long books. The casting needs to be impeccable, and they should get Paolini on as a closely involved creative consultant on the whole thing.

Best part about there not being a sequel: I think it might be finally time for a reboot, I mean it's been ten years and will be longer once someone starts on it. :D
This series deserves better movie adaptations like Harry Potter got where a lot of care and work is put into it and it actually tells the story properly. While my memory of the book is bad (just too many things I have to remember so a lot of book info is leaking out of my head at this point) I remember how much I was thinking during this movie "this isn't right!"
Also, isn't Eragon like 13 or something in the book? I remember him being around 17 in like the third or fourth book and maybe something important happening because of him being that old, maybe not but I know he wasn't 17 in the first book. It was the first thing that told me that I wasn't going to enjoy the movie.

In the book the prophecy actually made sense and foreshadowed the course of the whole story. I loved going "Oh!" after the story passes a point mentioned in the prophecy. The movie? Yeah, telling him things he already knows. Also Brom's dying words... He whispered a few words from the ancient language to Eragon just before his death. Well but it was never touched again even in the books so... And Arya telling him she was a princess in the dream? Even if it was Durza not her... It was revealed only in book two!!! This movie is an insult to the Inheritance cycle and I cringe every time I even remember it... But you're right, Brom was great.

Interestingly those 7 words in the Ancient Language that Brom whispered to Eragon while dying are still a mystery in the series that will be solved in the fifth book of the series. C. Paolini said in an interview that he is gonna write a fifth book about the aftermath of the fall of Galbatorix and on an interview about it he stated that 'everyone in Alagaisia has overlooked something really important'. In the same interview he said that yes we will learn about those words that Brom whispered. Now hopefully we will just have to wait till the book is published to find out more

Also, what on earth is that thing that Durza is riding? Is that supposed to be some poor take on a Lethrblaka? /sighs/ I hope they do a remake sometime that actually FOLLOWS the plot properly so that not only could they impress the fans, but they could follow through with making the rest of the Inheritance Cycle into movies.
If only they could do it to the scale of the Hobbit...

I hope that someone produces a TV series based on Eragon. It could be a success if someone takes their time with it. Something like:
-Season 1 (6 Episodes; ends with Eragon finding the Dragon Egg)
That would open a lot chance of character development for all the citizens of Carvahall
-Season 2 (6 Episodes; ends with Raz'ac killing Garrow and Eragon leaving with Brom)
-Season 3 (~10 Episodes; ends with them leaving Teirm)
-Season 4 (~6 Episodes; ends with Eragon being captured in Gil'ead)
-Season 5 (~6 Episodes; Ends with them arriving in Farthen Dur and Murthag & Eragon being seperated)
-Season 6 (~6 Episodes; ends like the first book + Roran briefly being shown in the ruins of his destroyed home)
...and you have 6 seasons with very well developed characters just after the story of the first book. Yeah, would love a reboot/TV series of Eragon

I know that Shruikan was barely in any of the stories except for Inheritance, and even then he was only in a couple of chapters, and yet his scale and obvious power shown through Christopher's writing made a lasting impact. I just noticed while watching this that you can see Shruikan's wing by the throne in the first scene with Galbatorix. I mean come on. In the book, Galbatorix appeared to have a huge black curtain behind his throne, which at a later date turned out to be only a fraction of Shruikan's actual wing. Now it just looks like some black suit case which had some pretty decorations on it... It would have been so kickass to see Shruikan in all of his huge glory. By far one of my favourite dragons in literature and the first description of him in Inheritance where he first appeared gives me goosebumps every time I read it.

Fun fact about me: I like Inheritance Cycle more than Harry Potter and I love Harry Potter, but Inheritance cycle's world building goes beyond just things that directly have something to do with the main character(s), Eragon grows a lot, it doesn't end up with him ending up with his love interest, instead learning that they can't get together but accepting his duty to watch over the eggs and train future dragon riders, the fact you can't lie in the language of magic, with each word being the true name of the object ect... is more interesting than just learning a phrase that causes a spell, you need to learn an entire language and know the true meaning of the words to use magic best, the fact that it uses your own physical energy to cause it's affects makes it more of a magic you can gauge, and it switches P.O.V. to other characters to see how the things going on effects them and their problems. Sure it might have cliches but it's not like everything always goes right for Eragon and he isn't perfect or boring, he had different flaws he had to work through throughout the books and to accept them to realize his own true name as opposed to others like Luke(since apparently Star Wars is a big comparison, and that series is also a textbook heroes journey story, nothing groundbreaking in terms of story-telling except surprising people with Vader being Luke's father) whom wasn't really a unique character. People may say it's cliche and has too much padding. or Star Wars but with dragons, and they're wrong. The classic heroes journey has been around for ages, even the greeks had stories with it, and Eragon does a good job setting up the world and characters, and follows up on them in the sequels in a way I haven't seen often. The way they defeated Galbatorix is also amazing. Elva is an incredibly tragic and interesting character. There's so many good female characters, and none are written the way modern Hollywood writes them. The male characters are great as well. Sloan is interesting as a minor antagonist. True names for people is an interesting concept. There's just so much good that outweighs any of the bad, and it's better written then most give it credit for.

Saphira is supposed to be shiny blue like a sky of saphires. The lighting was poor. Oh! The creators of Once upon a time would do a MUCH better job with this! And, Eragon did have a crush on Arya but she is way out of his league. I can go on, but I'll stop here because all the fans know exactly what is left to be desired."I expected more!"

I'm also surprised he didnt mention anything about killing the razac since in the book, that again.. didn't even happen, the razac killed brom .. :'( anyway, and Eragon went alone to durza, brom was already dead. Again, just surprised KrimsonRogue didn't say anything. (why change that?)
Because since the razac died it makes it impossible to create a second movie, bc the razac returned to palancar valley and kidnapped Katrina, which caused roran to join the fight. This is a huge part of the book.
The last thing that annoys me is the ending fight with durza and the fact that the twins weren't there and murtagh wasn't captured, again this takes away from the second book as well as "the cripple who is whole" didnt speak with eragon at the end.

They did a complete nasty job on this. If they wanted to do this over, like he said, they would have to start from scratch. I would of suggested them to make a movie for each book. And they should make it longer. I heard that the movie is only like half an hour long. But it they are too lazy to remake the movie, they should of at least followed the plot! The characters don't even look like a quarter of what the books described them as! Arya has long black hair and she was not suppose to wear that golden dress (not the green one). Eragon has brown hair and brown eyes. Brom was fine. Murtagh looked like what I expected but also like he said, he didn't follow the things he was suppose to do. And Saphira in the movie, they put feathers on her NOT SCALES!!!! But baby Saphira was the most cutest thing ever in the movie.

yasemin kop Gotta say, you mention how no one looked how they were meant to but say Brom looked fine, when he was described more different than portrayed than anyone you mentioned. though I agree that Jeremy Irons was one of the best parts of the movie.
Besides that, yeah if they remake it they need longer movies. Hell they could make the 4 books into 8 movies and not add filler with the size and content they all have.

He was much nicer to the movie than I would've been. He mentioned the crappy dealing with Murtagh and Arya's characters and even brings up the waste of Angela the Fortune Teller and touches on the absence of Solemnbum, but he also overlooks the waste of Roran and Nasuada and the absence of Katrina and the Twins. (deleted scenes don't count) and even neglected to mention that the Ra`zac getting killed completely obliterated the story-lines for movies based on books 2 & 3.
I guess you can't really fault the movie for Roran, Katrina, and the Ra`zac since book two wasn't even published when the movie was released, but you could still bring it on the director's shoulders when you consider that he probably should've consulted with Christopher Paolini, the author of the books, to make sure the movie won't be Dead On Arrival.
Despite all these flaws, the movie is still pretty enjoyable depending on how forgiving you are. And I'm saying this, by the way, from a "Guilty Pleasure" stand point. In fact, I even listed this at #4 in my Guilty Pleasure Movies video.

I mean, Eragon has brown hair and eyes, Arya has black hair and elven ears which I'm most angry about, I expected Brom to look older, Angela was a sexy lady which she totally shouldn't be (and missing my one of my favourite characters Solembum) and to add on top: Saphira doesn't have freaking feathers. Well I'm much more forgiving about things like appearances because to me as long as they ACT well then I don't really care.
In DareDevil the movie Kingpin was black even though in the comics he was white.
Also in the Harry Potter books Harry has green eyes but Daniel Radcliffe has brown, and Emma Watson was way too beautiful to be Hermione which backfired on the 4th film.

and the ra'zac being actual badasses, the ra'zac parents being existent, pretty much every single bit of decent backstory, arya's entire fucking character, ajihad's entire fucking character, durza's entire fucking character, the fact that the limits of magic are never explained and the fact that durza could create a life sized living dragon like creature in about two seconds that is larger and seemingly stronger than saphira. if they had actually paid attention, the writers would have known that for durza, even though he is more powerful than the common elf, is actually kind of weak as shades seem to be portrayed, and that the very effort of trying to create that creature would not succeed and most likely kill him unless he stopped the spell. almost everything in this entire movie was screwed up and almost every event and character happened in the wrong way, at the wrong time.

Personally, I am a huge fan of the Inheritance book series, and think that most of the flak it gets is frankly undeserved. For a example: Some of the people who hate the book series call Eragon a psycopath due to his habit of slaughtering many of Galbatorix soldiers that, as far as he knows, just wanted to feed their families and dont even like Galbatorix in the first place. To that, I point out the fact that not only having the hero remorseless slaughtering faceless mooks almost a staple in the genre( I point to Star Wars, on which Luke does the same thing ), but Eragon is one of very few book series to have the characters in-universe discussing the morality of doing that, and it is clear Eragon is very hesitant and remorsefull about it, to the point of having nightmares about it. It is part of the point of his character: He starts off as a idealistic, yet naive, hero wanting to take down a perceived tyrant, but, upon seeing how war actually works, he progressivelly evolves into someone more cynical and pragmatic, someone willing to do acts of cruelty for a greater cause, but never taking joy on it, and never losing sight of his goal to help people. Pretty much half of the things the Inheritance series is accused of pulling( The mages being overpowered, the elves being too perfect, the Urgals being just yet another version of the orcs etc. etc. ), are actually deconstructed within the book series itself.
... Shame that the movie kind of takes away the moments on the series dedicated to deconstructing its own fantasy cliches, and make it every bit as cliche as the haters think the books are.

Instead of seeing a mighty coastal city that was well designed and thought out, we get a single shack in a swamp. We don't get mighty halls or a massive Ruby Rose that was the life's work of a great Dwarven artisan, a rose with is shattered in the final battle of the first book, we get mud huts and rickety bridges.

Instead of being disappointed that the movie didn't get things right, I instead got the books, which were superior to the movie. mostly came here cause the Inheritance Cycle is my FAVORITE book series, and this movie shat on that by not even having the characters PHYSICAL DESCRIPTIONS right. Though it DID have 2 good things. Namely Brom and that fight at the end with the shadow dragon summoned by Durza.
also, Chris has gone on record to say that the Inheritance Cycle was inspired by the likes of Star Wars, which is why there are similarities. And I should note that Eragon doesn't even join the Varden until near the END of the first book. And he spends more time with the elves than the Varden during the rest of the series!

May I remind you that in the book the final battle where Durza is killed was a dramatic duel on top of a giant star sapphire in the Dwarven stronghold? In that fight Eragon received an injury that was vital to the plot of the second book. They messed up with the shadow dragon and made continuity errors.

And I guess I'd already read too much other science fiction, because wow I got distracted by how he ripped off the magic system from Earthsea for example. I honestly think his parents would have helped him more by having him sit on the story at least until he was older.

Angela was so fun in the books. She was mysterious, yes, but she was also quirky, friendly to anyone who wasn't actively against her, a skilled fighter and tactician, an expert with poisons, and often came off as anywhere from eccentric to crazy... kind of like Phoebe from Friends. In fact, when she first meets Eragon, she's trying to prove that toads aren't real, which is kind of hilarious.

I hope sometime in the future there is a remake of this movie because it was a complete mistake in making this movie. There were too many things missing that should have been in the movie.

I'm not gonna say that Eragon as a book is anything more than Lord of the Rings-flavored Star Wars, but the movie is the saddest attempt to cash in on a fanbase I've ever seen.

I sadly have to agree on everything. I remember skipping school to see this movie and it wasn't even worth the day off. it had so much more potential. I don't understand how it got so bad with such a great book for all of their content decisions

While I agree the book is much much better.. I still owe a part of me to the movie.
I was what... eight or nine when it came out with a love of dragons. So my dad took me to see the movie in theaters. I went to see it in theaters three more times before it came out on DVD, at which point I didn't stop watching it for three days. Then, sneakily, my dad got me the book for Christmas. Understand, I was reading at a kindergarten level when he handed me the book. within the month I was reading at a fourth grade second semester. Before hand I hated reading, now, I love it. If it weren't for this movie, flawed as it is, i'd be borderline illiterate... (Although my punctuation could use work. xD)

Fun fact, the author is from Montana, which happens to be the state where I live.
