I actually liked the puzzle from the book cause it blew my mind. Also, if anyone tried to climb the vines on the maze, the implanted chips in their brains would have given the gladers illusions that the walls looked bigger and were not making any progress. Newt even tried to commit suicide by climbing the vines :'(
Also, the maze was in an underground dome. Therefore the weather and time was controlled by WICKED,but they never made it rain or snow.
I always thought the maze was one floor above the WICKED building and they had created some sort of optical illusion to make the elevator ride seem much longer than it actually was.
I think the best improvement the movie offered was with Teresa, which comes in 3 phases. 1) She arrives much later in the movie than in the book. In the book she arrives the day after Thomas and it's clear this was planned all along. But the movie has her show up later after Thomas' night in the maze, which introduces a mystery as to whether B was a reaction to A. 2) By introducing her later, she spends less of the movie hanging around asleep waiting to become relevant. 3) They dropped the telepathy. Totally pointless in the book so I was glad to see it gone.

I think you have good points but I don't agree with the telepathy being worthless.
I think what James Dashner was going for with the telepathy was something to offer Thomas comfort, especially when he's alone and has no one to talk to.
Did you or did you not read the books I never really liked Teresa’s until I read the Prequels (WHICH THE MOVIES DONT HAVE) and she is seen as a cute little girl
I'd say you're partly right that the movie tries to make Gally more complex, but they dropped the ball on a couple key parts, such as the trial scene after Thomas' night in the maze, where he babbles on about some truce with the Grievers that makes no sense at all. They don't "coexist" with those things, they hide from them constantly to avoid getting murdered. Book Gally doesn't say anything that stupid.

Jordacar i think he might mean more implied. Similar to a “we leave them alone in their territory and they leave us alone in ours” sorta deal.
He probably meant that while the Grievers hunt them they don't go after the gladers during the day because the gladers don't go after them during the night. Basically, both have their place in the maze but they stay out of each others ways until they actually meet up
In the book, Gally mysteriously disappeared after an intense fight during the meeting after Thomas and Minho survive the maze. In the end, Gally appears in the chamber and shoots Chuck, this explains that W.I.C.K.E.D had taken Gally. He never tried to become a leader.

I liked the end book puzzle, it forced people to think outside the box and not escape until Thomas arrived. If they found out how to kill a Griever before, then they could've escaped too soon, leading Thomas and Teresa to not have to enter the maze. The movie one felt too obvious to me.
Also the movie puzzle didnt seem like a puzzle at all, in the book it really felt like a planned experiment from start to end

Based on Krimson's description, it seemed like the puzzles were basically the same? Like, when criticizing the book's puzzle, it seems like a lot of what he was criticizing was the process for learning the code, which is largely the same between the book and the movie. The main difference seems to be that the book had letters where the movie had numbers. *Shrug*
My friend, lets call her Lizzie, reread the books then watched the movies she wrote down on the difference from the movie to the book
The Maze Runner: She was able to write 2-3 pages on the difference
The Scorch Trails: She wrote 4-6 pages
The Death Cure: She wrote 7-8 pages
We can all tell how far off the last movie was to the books

"crushing hallway" scenes always bother me. They add dramatic suspense and all, but they're always shot wrong. Usually it will be shot inside the hallway and we see the character almost being crushed, but still isn't out, and then he jumps out with just enough clearance, despite we clearly having seen his odds, and escaping being literally impossible
You should watch the Saw series. Has a crushing hallway that ACTUALLY crushes someone.
After the first one its not as dramatic cause you know that even if it looks like its close and he might not make it the shot is gonna change and he'll have enough space

(spoilers) The plot is actually a lot better with the sequels and prequels in mind, they explain a lot about the things that otherwise seem silly or nonsensical (Like the whole murdering children thing? That was because they used implants to study the gladers' brainwaves while they were immune but still had the Flare, just as an example)
Yeah, that's why series and trilogies should be reviewed as a unit, not as individual books. They are together for a reason

The movie sucks and creates lots of plot holes. The first movie is still less worse than the 2 other dumpster fires.

in the book Gally had already been stung and remembered something about Thomas which was in part why he disliked him also there are times when he is being "controlled" . The telepathy thing from the first book point of view is used to help Thomas trust Teresa and for her to convey information (as a deus ex machina of sorts) to him before the amnesia kicks in, also it means they are passing information in the book at times when it would be geographically inconvenient ie when Thomas is in the Maze. admittedly there are a number of ways the book could have done these things but the author but aimed for a layer of complexity which couldnt have worked with the changes the film made (including the location and setup of the maze). The maze puzzle was meant to be overly complicated as part of the trial and not complete-able until Teresa arrives to trigger the end of the trial, in the film it seemed the main thing stopping the gladers succeeding in the maze was not having killed a Griever it works well in a film though as its easy to follow ( A to B to C).

The whole reason why WCKD (or WICKED) had so much money was because after the sun flares all of the remaining governments combined together to create it.

There was a wold ending apocalypse happening where almost everyone was getting a zombie like disease called the Flair. As a result all the worlds governments came together to form WICKED. This have them almost unlimited money. This is the explanation from the book. If you want I could explain more.

I love the way Alby dies in the book. He is severely traumatized by the Changing, and in the movie it seemed to me like it didn’t affect him, or barely did. His death was boring and cliche in the movie, in my opinion.
The second movie was horrendous. I saw it with a friend and I laughed the last 10 min because it was so bad.

Why did you criticize everything in the book that differed from the movie? While you were right in some areas, I think that the code in the movie was a big disappointment. The code in the book was a genius puzzle that made it much more complex and interesting, rather than being just some stupid obvious code like in the movie. In the book, it actually makes sense why it took them three years to escape.
They apparently had to also kill a griever to escape. Not that far a reach.
A lot of people who only watched the movie ask why they didn't just make a ladder. In the book, it explained that there were spikes on top of the walls, and because the real escape was through the Griever hole, getting to the top of the maze wouldn't have helped anyway.
Also. Krimson says one thing he didn't like about the book was that the characters were brats. But if your family is taken away from you, your friends, your house, and you have been teleported to a maize, with no sense of purpose, while all your memories (except the name) have been wiped out, isn't it probable that you would turn into a brat out of sheer frustration?
Also. I think the reason they were provided with regular supplies, electricity etc. is because WICKED (it pisses me off that they, for some reason, made it WCKD in the movie) wanted to map the neural design of those guys. They were provided with a few comforts to check how they reacted to their predicament. I mean, some of them could (and did) just decide to stay there, cause why not. But the kids that WCKD was looking for were the ones who would fight their way out, not just sit back.

This movie actually made me so angry. I can't see it without feeling angry. In the book the maze was under ground for one, and they didnt go straight to the city in the book like they did in the movie. I actually enjoyed the book and the amount of problems the movie had, i hated it

In my opinion the movie and the book are very similar atleast the first one but if you move on in the story parts of the book that seem irrelevant become very important ther for i think it is reasonaible to criticise this points. And i do have some more critic wich is, to the creator of the video wher he talks about Informationen from the second Film but not the second book wich clearly puts a disadvantage for the book becaus the maze runner is not a in itself finished story.

I tell people, that if you have read the books, great. Dont watch the film. And if you like the film and haven't read the books, don't read them.
As much as you're trying to paint the movie as better than the book, almost every point you make makes me want to read the book, not watch the movie. Different tastes I guess.

Just my opinion but I would only reccomend the first book as a light read in one day. It's really short and fast-paced and would give you a decent rush of adrenaline for one evening.
The ones after I didn't even bother because it's obviously just taking after the fame of the first one :P they lost the sense of curiousity, the mysterious vibe slowly became yet another Hunger games inspired series.
Tbh this is probably one of the most difficult book to movie adaptions for me to rank on which is better. Personally I do like the movie more simply because they did a wonderful job portraying stuff in a new light, Yea not everything is perfect (it’s been ages since I’ve read the books or watched one of the movies) but they’re both pretty great
This was SUCH a good movie. I was severely disappointed when i read the book. My main irritation was with the writing style. This is why i can't read D.H. Lawrence either. Dashner is so repetitive. It's like he fears that the reader will not understand what he "showed", so immediately after he "tells"-several times. Like: His voice boomed with fury as he yelled, "Don't do that!" He was so angry that she had done that. His anger took over him. He was furious."
As a reader, I just started screaming in my head: "I GET IT! HE IS MAD! MOVE ON!"
Dashner is my favourite author and The Maze Runner is my favourite book.
As much as I understand that there is alot of differences from the book to the movie, considering the fact they only had only 42 days to film this movie and a limited budget. I honestly think the film turned out amazingly. Sure I do agree, the book was better, I still love the movie.
Be thankful it wasn't like the Percy Jackson movies

Aaaah, I've been waiting for this and am so glad you made this review! I will say, that while I hate the trilogy (having gotten so angry that I refuse to read the other two prequel books) over all I do still enjoy the first book. I agree that it is definitely better for younger audiences though. Also, interesting side note, I called Alby's death as soon as he was introduced. Black, angry, and in charge? His name might as well have been R.I.P. Also agree with Gally (and mostly everyone) being better portrayed in the movie as opposed to the book.
I think the movies, as they go on, will have a mich harder time with fitting things together and making sense since there is such a big departure from the book (like the maze being outside) which could lead to even more questions but this movie was still enjoyable on its own.
Can't wait to see your review of the second book/movie and wonder if you'll have similar feelings to mine.

Speaking of which, with the release of the Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard series and the Trials of Apollo series by Rick Riordan, have you noticed the flaws in the timeline of the shared world of Percy Jackson, The Kane Chronicles, Heroes of Olympus, Trials of Apollo, and Magnus Chase? It's been one of the few things that would really want to make me rant.

I remember now why I never finished this series. Reading the first book showed me just how claustrophobic I am (also grievers despite poor design were freaking terrorfying), and by the end of it I couldn't bring myself to start the next book. Maybe I'll give it another try.

After reading through some of the comments it feels like I am the only one who really likes the book. In fact. When I read the book ten years ago I must have been about 13-14 at the time. I thought the book was so good I didn’t think a greater book would be written in my life time.
As you say, Gally's actions were much more understandable in the movie than in the book. I also watched the movie before reading the novel and thus found it confusing when Gally suddenly appeared out of nowhere in the end. However, the book provides an explanation in that Gally was brought through the Maze by WICKED (or WCKD), which also made him kill Chuck. Like you, I found the grievers much scarier in the movie than in the book.

Your review is making me actually consider watching the movie because of how good it sounds. I thought it was going to be another just-okay dystopian. Apparently not? Though I do remember hearing Scorch Trials was just okay... I think I liked the book when I initially read it, but as I read through/watched other reviews, I realized that it wasn't that great and the characters were pretty meh. Maybe I'll give the series another shot...
When I watched Maze Runner for the first time I couldn't call it a griever but a Scrael. Only because that's how I imagined Scrael from The KingKiller trilogy looking like.

I agree. This is one of those adaptations that I prefer more than the book. Not that the book was bad or anything, but the movie was a tad more exciting. Also (just know this is just a gripe _I_ have), while James Dashner is a decent author, he either seems to have a hard time describing certain elements in his writing or what he describes feels underwhelming. Like, when he describes the Grievers and those creatures at the end of the _Scorch Trials_ book, I'm legitimately having trouble visualizing from what's being written. I'm like "Wait a minute... _what?"_
I really hope to see live action adaptations of Charlie Higson's the enemy series. I love those books. Plus the possibilities are incredible for a series of movies or even a tv show based off of it.

I read the book and watched the movie. I prefer the movie, though not perfect, because it kept most of the good elements from the book and improved or left out most of the weaker material (which there was quite a bit of). A lot of the movie flaws are carryover from the material it adapted.

I remember loving the Maze Runner book and movie. But I honestly for the life of me can't remember the plots of the other two books in the original trilogy. I didn't read the Kill Order or Fever Code.
Edit: Also something that fucking hilarious to me is the guy who plays Gally also played Kenny in "We're The Millers."
The franchise had such promise. But if you set up interesting questions, then authors need to be prepared to give satisfying answers. Not just make us care then tell us "that wasn't what was really important; this next level is what's more important" and onward to "none of it matters because i just want to create chaos in this very interesting world with characters who never finish a meaningful arc." The maze that started off as a reader's puzzle became quicksand that readers could never hope to surface from unless the author threw us a rope once in a while.
Any plans to do The Constantine movie? It is an adaption of a specific story arc The Dangerous Habits.

edit: 27:29. Yeah, that was something I didn't like about the books either. They were trying to make a cure, when better quarantine options would've been a more viable solution, and cost less. This makes EVEN LESS SENSE in the movies because you find out 1: helicopters still exist. 2: the maze was on the surface the whole time. and 3: There are people fighting back against the wicked witches (with a B).
at least the book jumped over that massive plot hole the size of Georgia.... don't worry, they created even bigger plot holes latter, but at least they avoided this one.

It's been years since I read the books, and this video is several years old obviously, but I just watched all 3 movies and I have this at least to say: The telepathy between Taresa and Thomas was important because it gave a concrete reason as to why they were so important to each other. In the movies, they're only connected because they have memories of being coworkers. But in the books, they were linked intrinsically which made the betrayal later on more biting and such.
I'll note I was most definitely the target audience of the books

Any promise tge mpvie series had was ruined with the Scorch Trials. It saddens me. I loved this movie, thought it was a great adaptation and expanded on the concept and fixed a lot of issues I had with the book. Then they threw the good-writing ball in a lake. And set that lake on fire.
Love the CSI Miami reference :) .
The part about Gali and why he showed up at the end is explained later on the the books and actually makes some sens. I think the movies later on are not as good as the first one and i don't even remember if his plot is brought up later on

The biggest plothole and the thing that I hated about the movie the most, was how Gally fucking returns after having a spear thrown into his heart. In the Book, Thomas just punches the shit out of him and leaves him unconscious, it makes sense that he isn’t dead, but a god damn spear right in the chest is something else.

I had read all of the Maze Runner books before the first movie came out. I remember liking the first movie, but the Scorch Trials movie pissed me off so much that I've never seen the rest of them (actually I don't even know if they made another movie after that)
I'm not a huge fan of the series anymore, but nowadays my favorite series from this author is the Mortality Doctrine. I don't think it has any movies but if you do just book reviews it'd be cool if you looked into it.

spectro 88 please do it! I read the book, and I had a few issues with the characters. I want to know if we think alike.
Honestly, I dislike how several bits are done in the movie (Chuck, certain bits with Gally, the Griever’s poison (and how the Grievers look, cause even though the movie one is scary, I was TERRIFIED of the idea of the grievers rolling towards someone), the way they handle the elevator because the point was that it gave them precious supplies so the last glader coming up also was the last of those supplies, Ben’s initial appearance (though his banishment is better), Lang’s death (I always thought part of the point was that it was basically his suicide), even the fact that the Gladers aren’t bigger jerks), but the first movie definitely a decent adaption, even though I don’t love it. However, compared to the other adaptions, this is one is MUCH better. I haven’t seen Death Cure yet, I can’t bring myself to watch it yet, but Scorch Trials is TERRIBLE. I’m so late but I think the books are superior. However, I think that Teresa’s death was handled a LOT better in the books.
In the books, her character was built up over 3 books and 2 prequels. Thomas’s and Teresa’s friendship was built up and she was obviously an important part of his life, even when she betrayed him. Then her death kind of just… happened? It spanned 2 paragraphs and then the book just ended.
In the films, she completed her character arc and came full circle by saving Thomas. Then she got an aesthetic-main-character-falling-into-green-screen death. And Thomas reflects on her death by writing her name on the wall.
Like Teresa or not, she definitely deserved a death that spanned more than 2 paragraphs.
My big problem with the movie was how the protagonist was punished for going into the maze without permission. If he hadn't, one of the main characters would have been killed. I don't like it when main characters follow their intuition rather law and get crap for it. Granted he got promoted to maze runner, but I still don't like that. Maybe it was different in the book...

As someone who didn't read the book..yet, i very much enjoyed the first movie, however the sequel on the other hand didn't love it as much as the first one.
