Phil Woods and David Sanborn play Horace Silver's Señor Blues: • David Sanborn & Phil W...
David Sanborn was an important jazz musician for several reasons that have significantly influenced the jazz and broader music scenes:
Sanborn had a distinctive alto saxophone sound that blends elements of jazz, pop, and R&B. His style was recognized for its bright, piercing quality and emotive expressiveness, which has made him one of the most recognizable saxophonists.
Throughout his career, Sanborn collaborated with a wide array of artists across various genres, including pop, rock, soul, and blues. This includes work with icons like David Bowie, Eric Clapton, Stevie Wonder, and more. These collaborations helped bridge the gap between jazz and mainstream music audiences.
Sanborn achieved considerable commercial success, rare for many jazz musicians, particularly those who remain true to the genre's experimental and complex nature. His albums often charted well, bringing jazz to broader audiences.
His excellence in music had been recognized with multiple Grammy Awards, which highlight his skill and influence as a musician.
Sanborn also hosted the television show "Night Music," which featured a wide range of musicians and styles. This not only showcased his versatility but also his commitment to exploring and promoting diverse musical landscapes.
He was influential in music education through his participation in workshops and clinics, sharing his knowledge and inspiring new generations of musicians.
Through these contributions, David Sanborn left a lasting impact on the jazz world and beyond, making him an important figure in contemporary music.
A moment of silence for these three great masters who are gone now but will never be forgotten. RIP Burt Bacharach, George Duke, and David Sanborn
George Duke, Burt Bacharach, and David Sanborn are no longer with us. But their contribution in jazz music will live on forever!
Burt Bacharach is one of my heroes, along with Duke and Sanborn who have profoundly impacted my life. Reflecting on your comment about the 3 having left us, helps me put things into perspective. The joys and burdens we experience in this life are temporary; they will all be left behind when we move on from this world.
Не могу поверить 😢😢😢
R.I.P. - You were, still are and always will be a part of my life's soundtrack. Thank you for your music Mr. Sanborn
R.I.P, one of the greatest saxophonists on the Earth.
Bret,I think it should be said that for all the great work you have done over the years, for all of us who truly appreciate the great and important creators of this music, you are a national treasure!
Greatly appreciate your kind words!
All three of these guys are now gone. What a great loss for music and all of us... R.I.P. Duke, Bacharach, & Sanborn. Your music will carry on...
Sanborn is one of those players whose tone and melodic sense made him instantly recognizable... I love his performance on David Bowie's "Young Americans"
People will be listening to him for a long long long time
RIP DS
That’s what I love most about that Bowie song ❤
Burt Bacharach, David Sanborn and George Duke brought much joy to my life and that is priceless. I will always remember them...
Thank you for posting this, Bret.
All 3 of these men were more than just a pretty face. & Mr Sanborn certainly our singer.
God rest all of their souls.
Wowww Amazing 🍺🍺🍺
I am completely heartbroken and unable to speak about this loss. I was born one day before David, July 29, 1945, I will miss his talent, originality, and captivating virtuosity forever.........RIP David
He was a beautiful cat and had such an original voice on the saxophone.
Hello Michael I am Andy one of your avid fan. I truly love your music and I always listen your record aside from the late David Sanborn
@@solecaring1230 Hello Andy, and thank you for being a supporter of mine and of course David's! He was one of a kind!
@@michaelpedicinjr Thanks Michael for your reply. Im so happy to hear from you. You are indeed my inspiration of keeping me to continue playing my saxophone. I always play your saxophone solo hits like your "Deja vu", Magnicent Madness and of course your song entitled "Happiness is You:. Those are your songs very popular and top in the chart im my home country Philippines.
Just to let you know Michael as one of your avid fan, that nothing last forever of being celebrity. The "real deal" is would God consider your wealth and fame to save you from Judgment Day?
One of the great modern saxophone stylists, he will be missed. RIP Mr. Sanborn.
Now that's music! Holy smoke bring this back.
I met David on a plane out of seattle very late at night 1990
I met David Sanborn in 1978 and saw him a couple times at Thornton Winery in Temecula California.
He’s with the the Angels in Heaven
Beautiful tribute to Mr Sanborn.....a great loss for the music, in general, jazz & fusion in particular. I was a teenager when I heard the first tunes played by Him and was hooked instantly by the sound, mood...a great artist! What a loss :(
This is sad news . Back in 1986 I got to hang with him and his girlfriend on the Caribbean island of St Barths for a week. She was a very successful jingles singer who really helped my business out back in NYC. David was a sweetheart. At the time , he refrained from characterizing himself as a jazz player. He thought of himself as an R & B saxman. ( He loved King Curtis ) When we went swimming it became apparent that as a kid, David had suffered from polio . His body was not strong . But from his really great demeanor and energetic playing , this did not hold him back . I’m only sorry that I didn’t go to see him when he appeared at the City Winery here in Manhattan a few months ago . By today’s standards, he was a young man , too young to leave us. But his body of work didn’t. R. I. P.
Another very sad day for us, Jazz lovers... RIP Sr. Sanborn
Perhaps the greatest Alto player ever, if you simply go by the number of Alto players that attempted to emulate him but could not.
As a child he survived polio and had only one functional lung, but still blew more powerfully than anyone! At the same time he could produce the most amazing tone and articulation as on songs like This Masquerade and Lotus Blossom. He also had the greatest Music variety show, Night Music!
Another Great is gone.
I remember his chorus in the last song "sad cafe" from the Eagles (album : The long run) Thank you Mr. Sanborn
Thank you for this tribute.🙏💐
What an incredible musical voice! He will be greatly missed but his sounds will stay! May he be Eternal.
Yes, he will be eternal.
My condolences to David's family and friends. What a monster of a player. He lives on in the tones of many an alto man ❤
Dave had an unmistakable voice!
I am without words. David Sanborn was my favorite musician. R.I.P.
RIP David. Your heart and soul will forever shine on through the love and beauty in your music.
Sad to learn of the passing of David Sanborn. In the modern era of the instrument and the changing face of Jazz he remains amongst the greats and I personally felt the loss of his passing. I recall his apparent shock and subsequent tribute over twenth years ago of the passing of another modern great: Grover Washington Jr. And boy was that a loss! My deepest condolences to his family. Sad news for all of us. RIP
We Will Always Miss Your Fantastic Saxophone !!!
Sir, David William Sanborn
These looses are getting hard to deal with.

Such a beautiful soulful tone he had on alto saxophone. RIP David - you gave countless hours of musical delight to me.
And so many others.
Thank you, DAVID SANBORN for doing your part to help tame mankind with your gift and talent. In the meantime, I'll help keep the music playing.
The short lived tv show Night Music was such a delight because of the chance to hear him play with his guests and band.
I still enjoy watching those episodes. I love when he played with Miles, and with Pharoah Sanders.
Jazz Video Guy I still remember the one where he had Sonny Rollins on as a guest. Great show!
@@rufusjohnson4923 With Leonard Cohen. That is on UA-cam as well.
Oh my goodness..my heart goes out to those close to him. This is indeed the end of an era as we say goodbye to a massive influence on my generation of sax players. There was a time, not that long ago, when it was hard to imagine a more perfect alto sound. So bright, so rich, so unique, so incredibly soulful! RIP Mr Sanborn - you’ll always be in my heart and in my ears
Show 🎷🤩
Thank you so much David Sanborn 🎷🎷🎷🥇🥇🥇 RIJesus ❤️❤️❤️🌹🌹🌹--👨🏽🦽🌴🦅☕️🎼🎹
RIP thank for your music.
Dave was a beautiful cat. I met him in New York. He interviewed me on his radio show. He was very beautiful about his knowledge of things or was not afraid to ask what were the chord changes to the last four bars of the bridge of softly as in the morning sunrise. Like that he was just straight ahead and I know he studied with George Coleman. One of my homeboys Ricky Peterson worked with Dave a lot. When Dave came here to Denmark and played solo with the radio big band here where I was a member at that time, he arranged for a private jam session with me and some of the cats here in Copenhagen we had a ball. He was so humble in a special way. He was aware of his strong points and he was very aware of the things he should work on. Just like all of us that are players. I think his television show was incredibly great for putting the music out in front of a wider audience. His times lot. He was a brother!!!!!
Wonderful man. He will be missed.
Rest well David…
One of my favorite sax players who could play it all and was open to all kinds of music. Very sad indeed.

Very sad to hear the news of sanborn's passing, may he RiP, and I'm glad I had the pleasure of seeing him live in concert here in Michigan back in the 90's and early 2000s.
Une pensée pour son épouse Alice. Quel son, quel impact musical dans ma vie depuis ma découverte de Change of Heart en 1987! Et depuis toutes les traces enregistrées qu'il nous a laissées ! Un grand merci Mr Sanborn!
Sanborn will be sorely missed.
You could cut steel with that tone but what a fantastic tone for a ballad too
So sad. Then I remembered his epic, inspired solo on Hendrix's Little Wing in an Eric Clapton concert, that brought back a smile on my face. We'll miss you, Mr Sanborn.
Am glad I was able to see him in concert in Detroit
RIP 😔☹️🙁😕
