- Every year for some reason we listen to the choices of the people, and every year they throw an award show about it called The People's Choice Awards. This year we saw the cast of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills like Kyle Richards, Kathy Hilton, Lisa Rinna, and Erika Jayne make appearances while Kris Jenner and Khloé Kardashian of The Kardashians accepted an award on behalf of the show. Performers like Lizzo welcomed activists to recognize them, and influencers like James Charles made waves on social media for less appealing instances.

After living in LA, I learned that a lot of people in LA think “fashion” means wearing the most expensive and recognizable designer items they can get their hands on, whether it fits well or not, whether it’s cute or not…… and it’s often not.

@@limpcheesestick I’m from Chicago and I lived in New York for years. The street style in Los Angeles is abysmal compared to Chicago and New York. Every city has its own culture, its own style code. Chicago is all about adapting your style and color scheme to the weather patterns and New York style is whatever you make it, just be original and stand out. People have a general awareness of fashion history in both places and of course lots of people wear high end designer items, but that isn’t the focal point of their outfit. I inherited a lot of great pieces (whether they’re designer or not) from my mom and grandma, and I loved shopping for vintage designer pieces from places like James Veloria or Tokyo7, but you would never know those pieces were designer unless I told you so. Most people already have an established personal style and aesthetic and they incorporate these items into their closet, mixing and matching pieces to come up with fun new looks. That is not the culture in LA.
In LA, people conform to whoever the it girl of that time is and they all try to copy her style. You can tell from looking at certain people whether they’re attempting to copy Kylie Jenner or Bella Hadid. I’ve overheard conversations where people will mispronounce Givenchy or Jean Paul Gaultier and admit they only know those names because Kim Kardashian wore it once. Head to toe monochrome sweats, leggings and air jordans, lip fillers and fox eye lifts galore. Of course, if you’re outside of the celebrity and wealthy circles, there’s much cooler style happening and my friends and I never dressed like that, but I’m talking about the people who have money and influence in LA and are destroying the global fashion scene because they’re the ones dominating social media and other forms of media at large. The “nouveau riche” style we’re all familiar with likely began in LA and spread across the globe like a virus. With all that being said, money can’t buy you class or taste and nowhere is that statement more apparent than in Los Angeles.
Shania's dress is a reference to her look in an iconic music video. If you see that, this dress will make a lot more sense even if you don't like it. For a long time, she stopped performing because of severe anxiety. She literally could not sing, so she's having a bit of a comeback now. It makes sense that she's revamping some old iconic Shania looks to let people know she's back.

It makes sense that Shania is referencing her iconic looks because she is unrecognizable without the leopard hood. The newest facelift got rid of her unique features.
It wasn't just due to anxiety, it was Lyme's disease. Still is, sadly. Her voice changed and she had huge issues

The difference between the photographers photos of the Kardashian’s and their own is fascinating. I mean everyone photoshops, but that is like different persons.
As a tailor myself, I love how you emphasize the fit of things! It makes the BIGGEST difference in the look and you feel even better in the garment!
Shania's outfit is reminiscent of her leopard outfit from " That don't impress me much" . I think that's what she was going for, at least.

That’s such a good point about Lizzos arm strap. The designers should’ve given her that same effect in the original dress. It would change the entire silhouette. It took back a second but good looks man!!

I liked the concept for Khloe's look but honestly her hair ruined it for me. Deconstructed outfits are prone to looking messy with messy hair.

Khloes look did not work for people choice awards but maybe a red carpet moment with slicked back hair would have been cute.

Shania Twain's inspo came from Her music video, "That Dont Impress Me Much". She wore a leopard print body suit and matching luggage. I strongly dislike these Designers who create ugly gowns for such icons. They should know better since they can pull from so much inspo. Ryan Reynold - men's pant length is personal. He is more conservative than others and thats okay Luke 😆.

I agree that Laverne Cox (wearing Collina Strada) and Lizzo (in Alexander McQueen) were the standouts. However a phrase that often appeared on my school reports comes to my mind for most of the rest, "...is trying, but needs more work...".

It's in the same vain as sheer mesh for poc, designers dressing us is the minimum, now match our skin tone.

Best for me: Lizzo - Love the print and how the pieces were put together - Heidi's dress should take a clue from this. But totally agreed about the strip across her shoulder. It should have been adjusted for more space for her arm. Ryan Reynolds also looked great. The angle of Khloe's outfit on stage just didn't look right to me. It looked like it fit her better in her posed picture.
