Story Behind The Song: George Jones "He Stopped Loving Her Today"

- Bobby Braddock came to Nashville almost 50 years ago to be a piano player for Marty Robbin, not knowing he would become one of the most legendary songwriters in Music City. To date he's written about 2500 songs, of which about 1600 are published, including one of the biggest songs in country music history, "He Stopped Loving Her Today'. "I had the concept of a love so strong that only death could terminate it" says Bobby Braddock. With so many songs in his library, you would think it would be hard to remember writing each one, but Braddock did something unique early in his career. "I always make sure at the end of the day, no matter what shape I am in or how I feel, that I write down the events of the day" says Braddock. Journals that hold many details about writing "He Stopped Loving Her Today" with his mentor- Curly Putman. "We started out with dark humor, funeral jokes and that sort and wrote on it a while and set it aside. I always rated the song 1 to 10 and O rated this one a 7. I thought it was okay, not a great song" laughs Braddock. With no clue who they were writing it for, several months later they decided to re-visit the song. They finished it that October day, or so they thought. Legendary producer Billy Sherrill and George Jones took the song, but passed. Then for some reason, they came back to it over 2 years later. "Billy said, hey we wanna cut that song, but it needs an extra verse in which you have the wife or girlfriend coming back to the funeral" remembers Braddock. Bobby and Curly actually wrote such a verse, but discarded it. The guys found it and gave it Billy - who still wasn't happy."We went back and forth from Sony Music Publishing, it was then Tree Publishing, to Billy's office. Finally the last one, he really liked" says Braddock. Braddock went to listen to the finished project a few weeks later, not expecting what he was about to hear. "You hear this violin, cello, this swelling ascending thing. It sounds like the guys soul is ascending to heaven. I knew it was something special" says Braddock. "He Stopped Loving Her Today" was released in the spring of 1980 and soared to the top of the country charts, but there is one thing about the song that Braddock says he will never quite understand. "I've had some people tell me they heard the song for years before they realized he died! I guess you have to get a hammer and beat them on head - he died" laughs Braddock. We asked Braddock if he agrees that "He Stopped Loving Her Today" is the greatest and saddest country song of all time. He says he actually thinks that a song he produced for Blake Shelton, called "The Baby", is a sadder song. He also doesn't think it's the best song he's ever written. He says he does believe it could be the best RECORD of all time, but the song he believes is the best he's ever written, wasn't even a single. It was a song on one of George Strait's albums called "The Nerve". His favorite hit, "Time Marches On" recorded by Tracy Lawrence. We asked Braddock if there are any artists that have not cut his songs that he would like to see cut his songs. He said he would love to have Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean record one of his songs.

This song pulls your heart out of your chest, stomps on it and puts it back in! 💔
This song was on the radio, my husband died just weeks before. Two weeks before he came to talk with me and told me he still loved me, also came to me in a dream and kissed me. Every time I think about that I cried many tears known that he stilled loved after he died.

hhmm... go easy on those magic mushrooms, karen
George Jones voice is a perfect fit for this song. His sound will almost rip your heart out.
have you heard the guy who auditioned on the voice with it. It's really great too. I think George Jones would be proud.

Josh Turner version is pretty good too :)

No one could've sung it better than George Jones. My grandfather loved my grandmother so much this was their song. He turned it down initially because he had recently split from Tammy Wynette and didn't want people to relate the song to their divorce or have it come across as a broken heart song. I'm glad he did end up doing it. I've seen him 3 times in concert and everytime, that song is always the most requested.

Having George Jones sing this song was perfect. A classic country voice singing THE classic country song.
When I heard about George dying this was my 1st thought "He stopped loving her (Tammy) today" That song played so much after his death.
God Bless Bobby for writing songs because the songs help our sorrows display of losing our loved ones to The Grave. To hear George Jones sing it is like listening to the music with great joy because of his amazing voice that makes us cry every time we hear him say He Stopped Loving Her today because he is dead. Wow that’s love to the end until death do we part! Brings new meaning to the word love!
nobody could have sang this song like George Jones.its such a special song

Can you imagine this man hearing George Jones singing this for the first. Only George could have sang this
song.
Listen to Tom Jones sing it and you'll change your mind
@@cathaymcrae2401 Tom Jones's version is not the number one country song of all time. Only George Jones has that title. In the south we don't say, "kept her 'pictuar' on the wall"
Only a Fla boy could have written it!
One of the most moving songs of all times.

I love Bobbys piano outro at 2:56, that is pure country piano.
Still makes me cry every time I hear it. A classic. George Jones was an amazing singer. Miss him.
I am the same way 😢 lord I miss George Jones ❗️

Played this song at my dad's funeral at his request. 💜
I remember the first time I heard this song on the radio , after the first two words my ears lit up and I thought WOW this is going to be something special. I wasn't wrong.
It's amazing how much He stopped loving her today touched so many lives. My daddy always said that he couldn't live with my crazy momma but death would be the only thing that could stop his love for her. In the end he said that he figured he'd probably still love her from where ever he ended up. ❤️
This is know as the best song ever by the greatest singer of all times
I wish my local news had amazing stories like this once in while.
KEEPING GEORGE JONES MUSIC ALIVE
Love George Jones,Country music I was raised on.
I was also shocked to realize it was from 1980...I swore it was a decade earlier, in the 70's...the song perfectly captures that timeless essence of what a country song can (and should!) be...

it is about a man who die's , never letting go of the woman he let get away! HE SAID I'LL LOVE HER TILL I DIE!
sippi smith i don't think he "let" her get away. She left. He had no choice.
Melissa E true, many times we don’t appreciate someone in our life until they step out the door and never return, then we think I should have done this or should have said this, but when love dies it doesn’t come back... she/ he takes that love and shares it with someone who appreciates it.
when I hear this song and think about my daddy when he passed away saying he stopped loving my momma today
HE STOPPED LOVING HER TODAY is l think the best songs ever l think. But we will never forget GEORGE JONES!!!
No one sings it like George Jones. It has been my favorite song since the first time I heard it.
I admit that I didn't get the "He's dead" importance of the song at first, but when that hammer hit me, what a difference. The song became so powerful when I finally (DUH) got it. It still brings tears to my eyes.
Mike E. how could you miss that? It is the whole song. ☹️
Dimwit!
The clue is "They hung a wreath on his door". The way of letting neighbors and passers by that a death had occurred before phones, internet etc.
THE GREATEST SONG EVER WRITTEN AND WAS SUNG BY THE 2nd KING OF COUNTRY MUSIC WHO I DON'T THINK WOULD NEED ANY INTRODUCTION!!!!!!! R.I.P. G.G.J........
The National Anthem of country music and sung by the the man!
ITstill gets me every single time, even after 40 years!

Statue Of A Fool is the greatest country song ever written...thank you very much!!!!
He stopped loving her today was the best song he ever wrote. I said the second was the baby I wish George would sang that one to. Blake Shelton did a good job the baby was mine and moms song she died right when the song came out. He stopped loving her today was my nanas song so they both bring back memories to me. Thank you me Bobby. For your talent In writing
This song is just the greatest and so is George Jones!!
Good songs reach millions over and over. And the musicians and George Jones brought it to fame.
Bobby Braddock, what a great songwriter. And working for Marty Robbins was quite a surprise for me. Right around the time I first got into country, Marty had a song called Matilda. Not too long ago, I looked it up just to hear it again, and guess who wrote it - Bobby Braddock.
But there is this other thing for me - a Bobby Braddock song so stunning, and I can't understand why no one ever recorded it and tried to make it a hit. It's called Rainy Florida Afternoon:
Thought they’d rediscover one another for all time
Silver sands, old memories and the golden Gulf sunshine
Their hopes were high as they passed by the Georgia Florida line
They looked around and saw the pounding raindrops in the pines
It was a rainy Florida afternoon, a rainy Florida afternoon
At 2 PM they checked in to the Surf and Sun Motel
The room was nice and worth the price
Outside it rained like hell
Uneasily he watched TV and drank some Muscatel
While she stared out the window like back home in Philadelphia
A rainy Florida afternoon
A rainy Florida afternoon
At 4 PM two strangers in the place where it began
It was a sort of last resort in more ways than they planned
The sun came out and danced about the wet white sugar sand
But the sun would never shine into their lives again
It was a rainy Florida afternoon
A rainy Florida afternoon
This song tears me apart every time I hear it. A perfect song.
one of the best songs with feeling, lyrics and words that relate to me
I didn't get it immediately but the second time I heard it I did,,and when I did it was really incredible , what a genius song
Tommy Haynes exactly it was KARMA the song LAYED there for years unfinished and at exactly the right time the KING STUMBLED ACROSS THIS GREAT SONG THAT DESCRIBES HIS LIFE AND LOVE FOR TAMMY WYNETTE TO A TEE AND IT WENT STRAIGHT TO THE TOP JUST LIKE IT WAS MEANT TO BE !!!!!!! SOME OF THE PEOPLE ON HERE MISSED THE WHOLE POINT !!!!!!
George outshines any and all of these "new country" groups and does it by a mile!
I went to school with Bobby. He, my brother Richard Woods and I were in Orburndale High School Band together. My mother drove the school bus that took us to the football games to play.
I WAS one of those who heard the song for years, until I actually listened to the words, and went "WOW..."
My FAVORITE song George has ever recorded......
I agree with him on "The Baby" but I don't think anyone could have done this one better than George did.
I agree, The Baby' tears me up everytime !!!
Greatest love song ever !
The saddest song ever is "50,000 Names Carved In The Wall" mainly because it is a true story. Hopefully nothing sadder will ever be written.
+dennis gallagher yes, you are correct sir. to all who gave some, and to some who gave all, thank you.
dennis gallagher i need to look for that. You should put a link with your comment if you can edit it.
The saddest thing is Alan Jackson singing it on GJ'S burial. So relatable with the occasion yet so depressing 😭
Greatest Country song that ever hit the airwaves. Followed closely by Vince Gill's Go Rest High on the Mountain.
RIP George May God Bless You
The Grand Tour is a tear jerker too. Made me cry. The only other one that made me cry like a baby I heard when my nephew was in Iraq and I couldn't even get out of my car. It was
Letters From War by Mark Schultz.
I think of my uncle when I hear this song. He lost his wife three years ago, after 67 years of marriage. Since she died he has never gone back to sleep in their bed. Instead, he sleeps in another room full of her pictures where he now sleeps by himself.
Ole No Show said in an interview Billy brought him the song and he said, "Billy I'll be the laughing stock of country music if I cut this song." Then Billy finally convinced hem to cut record and "the rest is history" folks!👏👏👏👏
Greatest story song ever
Placing a wreath in the door was what opened my eyes.
One of the greatest, no doubt!
The Planets aligned with this song. Damn how such a great great song got kicked around.
No He wrote the best ever song
He Stopped loving her today
We can never say thank you enough.
Great story! Passing along to Facebook.
This just may be the BEST SONG EVER sang by the BEST SINGER EVER
This song never to be forgotten. After having been divorced from my husband 4 years my ex gave my son a copy of the 45 of this house to give to me. Sorry things didn't work out for us. He passed away last November. I did go see him in the hospital on his last days on earth.
Every time I hear this song I cry. Every time......
I figured that out the first time I heard it, The song is so beautiful but so sad,
the greatest song of all time
Only George could pull this one off.
+heidi Holiday That's really true . I have never heard anyone do it nearly as well
This song and Patches by Clarence Carter ....always make cry like a baby...
a song I have always felt was very well written is "Down in Tennessee" the version by John Anderson. It has so many double meanings. Very good tune, if you got 3 minutes, you'll be glad you spent listening to it
Have to laugh because I was one of the guys who didn't realize the man had died! Danced it for months before I figured it out. Great song.
I love trying to figure country songs out...I had this one on my own long long ago...Did you get the Grand Tour yet ,Let me know ....I'll tell you mine if you don't have it
mendon lezine Uhmm think so. The wife left him and took his kid????? WIl listen to it and look again.
Hi again Bill,Like I said,I always did like to try and figure out what a song is saying just as you do....Tell you what, Lets play with this one a minute for fun..I know what I think and I'll let you know after this try for you, I hope you get it. Go to George Jones..T.G.T. With Lyrics and Pictures...I Knew long before this also and get back with me ASAP..Good Fortune!!!
mendon lezine Bill,Again someone died, this time it was her.....She Died doing Child Birth....If you don't get it, then ask and I'll explain!!!
mendon lezine Re: Grand Tour I think you're right. I believe she did die. Although with the exception of one line the song could be about her leaving and taking the baby with her. It's plausible that she just left him and left her stuff behind. I know a lady who did that in real life. The line that points to your interpretation is "Now she's gone forever" On the other hand..... he does seem to be blaming her in most of the song and if she died in childbirth he probably would be blaming fate or god. You're right too about it being fun figuring out lyrics!
We heard Bobby Braddock place this song at the Americana Music Festival in a small listening room with maybe 25 people andand will never forget it.
Thank you Jody Harlan.
Thanks for your comment!
George Glenn Jones (September 12, 1931 - April 26, 2013) was an American country musician, singer and songwriter. He achieved international fame for his long list of hit records, including his best-known song "She Stopped Loving Him Today", as well as his distinctive voice and phrasing. During the last two decades of his life, Jones is often called the greatest country singer alive. Country music scholar Bill Malone wrote, "During the two or three minutes spent by a song, Jones immerses himself so completely in the lyrics, and in the mood they convey, that the listener can scarcely escape the same engagement." The shape of his nose and facial features earned Jones the nickname "The Possum". Jones has been called "The Rolls Royce of Country Music" and had more than 160 chart singles to his name from 1955 until his death in 2013. ☦️
George Jones' pal Alan Jackson also sang it at the Grand Opra.

Bobby is a super nice person, he lives in Polk Co Florida and is just a normal guy (for a genius).
Great story.
I agree it is my #1 all time top country pick. if you want to hear the sadist play Geo. Jones and Gene Pitney "Sweeter Than The Flowers"
People are not realizing someone had died because of George Jones's voice... The best
Top of the line here.!
I respectfully disagree. There is no sadder song than this. It is great. Love it
This is one of my very favorite "sad songs" and no one sings it like George Jones. Strange that some people didn't understand it was about a men who died. "They placed a wreath upon his door" would be the clue for me. I grew up in the 50s in the south and remember that a wreath of white imitation carnations was placed on/by the front door by the funeral home to indicate a death in the family. Maybe other places in the US that was not the custom. Just a guess.
George Jones all the way !!!!
Three cords and the truth, that's all there is to it.
well put cause the truth shall set you free....
Greetings from IRELAND 😉
song came true rip George
Jim DeCamp Harlan Howard's quote
In 1978, I had a brother that passed away with the same story heard in "He stopped Loving Her Today" His wife ran around on him while he lay in his hospital bed in critical condition from an electrical burn he suffered on an electrical line installation.
He survived the accident but lost a leg. She left him several times along the way and was seen running around with other men during that time. He just kept taking her back even though we all told him to dump her sorry behind.
Another, younger brother of mine used to play poker with George Jones. I feel sure that that conversation came up during that time, especially when she did show up at his funeral. AND, we all wondered if she would.
Bobby Braddock said that he had always had an idea for that song. I like to think it was about my brother. He was a heck of a guy, and that song reminds me of him.
Oh, Yeah! Ding Dong the wicked witch IS dead! Wish I had been there!
Carl Savant sadly that happens a lot. I know 3 men who went out on their wives as they lay dying of cancer. And one woman who went out on her husband while he was dying of cancer. She was dating the preacher that was counseling him and preached his funeral. Smh 🤦♂️
@@ME-xy4qh I have a sister-in-law whose 2nd husband did that to her, and there was no illness or injury involved on her part. They divorced last year after 15 years of marriage. Oh, and my sister-in-law was his FIFTH wife, and in fact, he was seeing her while his 4th wife was dying from cancer. So yup, he's on wife #6 now -- a lady who USED to be good friends with my sister-in-law, no less -- and that's just the way he is, just loves 'em and leaves 'em.
Oh, and about that preacher -- if he's gonna be like that, he has NO business being a preacher, according to 1 Timothy chapter 3 and Titus chapter 1. In fact, a pastor should never even inasmuch as even allow himself to be alone with a woman other than his wife!
I really appreciate song back stores but here we're left wondering. which song on "The Nerve" was it?
The best songs are simple and HONEST
I always thought this incredible was song was about George and Tammie Wynette.
Deidre Lee. And you would be exactly right lil lady I know Nancy saved the man but everyone knows that they both loved each other till death departed them but I know alot of couples exactly like them even though they loved each other they just couldn't live together!!!! I hate to admit it but I had the same problem after I let my 2 son's get to an age where they could take care of their selves and I built each 1 of them a home and I had to fix it to where she can't sell either one of them or borrow money against them I had to divorce her or I was afraid I would SNAP 1 day and actually kill her she was 1 of them women that no matter what you do it's never good enough for her and I will never love another woman like the mother of my son's SAD BUT TRUE !!!!!! SORRY IF THAT WAS TO MUCH INFO !!!!!! lol peace lil lady
George Jones and Billy Sherrill made in the best song in country music history.
Even tho the writer does not think it 's not the greatest ,there will never be another SAD love song .I told my kids when I go they can play that .Be cause that's when I will stop loving my wife who has already passed on FOO2
s
Its a song about he loved her til the day he died that when he would only be able to stop loving her and she came to see him on last time before he died
She came to see him after he died when she went to the funeral. That was the last time she seen him......Remember when George said he and his friends wondered if she'll come...That's what they meant.....I'm Not knocking you, I'm glad to help, ,,,I love trying to get into an figure it out on what they mean.....Do you know what happen in the Grand Tour ?..Let me know?
Melanie Adkins NO you missed it. He died, they placed a wreath on his door. She came to see him at the funeral home.
Melanie Adkins you got it right pretty lil lady peace from New York city via North Carolina lol!!!!!
Melanie Adkins he's right sexy lady she came back 1 last time but he was in a casket sweetheart remember when he said ah and we all wondered if she would??? All dressed up to go away meaning heaven I'm pretty sure that he was a born again Christian if not that only leaves 1 other place and I hope nobody reading this ends up there but I got astray lil lady and then he said FIRST TIME I'D SEEN HIM SMILE IN YEARS !!!!! I DON'T KNOW IF THAT SMILE WAS A NATURAL 1 OR THE MORTICIAN PUT IT ON HIS FACE WHAT DO YOU THINK SWEETIE ?? LOL BUT HE'S RIGHT LIL LADY PEACE PRETTY !!!!!!! RTS.......
What people still miss is the dark humor.
lol... 3.00 ... I was the same way with the song "Green green grass of home"
ureckn so i was older before I got the meaning of that one.
3:10 ''He died!'', Too funny.
I get a lot of lyrics wrong, but this one was so
obvious, how could anyone not 'get' what
it was/is about. lol
He Stopped Loving Her Today is a great song. But I personally believe Vern Gosdin's Chiseled In Stone is a better all a round song. Shorter, better hook, and it is extremely memorable.
Mike Richards CHISELED IN STONE IS LEGENDARY BUT THAT SONG DESCRIBES GEORGE JONES AND TAMMY WYNETTE TO THE LETTER COME ON MAN YOU'RE COMPARING APPLE'S TO ORANGES !!!!! PEACE MY FRIEND
my ex husband died the march after this song came out and I traveled 1200 miles to be at his funeral. That one last time..
Does no one notice Bobby is wearing stilettos? Hahaha. To each his own. 👍
I don't think you can say one song is sadder than the other. I mean I love this song and it can bring tears. But could you imagine if your dad passed away early in your life and you heard Conway Twitty's "That's my job"? They might have to build another ark with the amount of tears that'll flow. And if you don't have a father you could cry wishing your dad wasn't such a piece of shit. Music isn't so simple that one song can bring more sadness than another. Music moves individuals in different ways. That's why it is awesome art. Hell if you lost a loved one in the wars, Toby Keith's American soldier can be painful while giving a bitter sense of pride in their sacrifice. It all depends.
Laser Drone YOU ARE right on the money friend I love That's MY job and I also like the song you mentioned by Toby Keith but being a veteran I have to block of the things I had to do I don't wish that on anyone and all of the combat vet's know exactly what I mean friend but yeah I like to see people on here that actually knows what they're talking about because you are going to see some blistered idiots on here that I try to ignore BUT these morons who are crying about how country music isn't the same as it used to be but what is it's called change it don't mean that literally it's going to just magically disappear get a grip do we still listen to Beethoven BACH Mozart. I could go on but if they're that ignorant there's no hope for them lol it's been a pleasure to meet a fellow country music lover that knows what they're talking about!!!!!! Peace
I have to admit in my opinion the saddest country song is either he stopped loving her today or whiskey lullaby
soon the story will also be my story. i trapped in the past and still loving her to this day, been keeping each and every memoirs, i just hope she'll at least come to my funeral later. naah not 'bout suicide or that kinda crazy thing, life is beautiful, it's just that my body couldn't keep up anymore like it used to, organs failing one by one while i'm enjoying both the life and sorrow in it until it finally completes me.
great
