ERNIE ARAMBULA, Penske/Donahue cheated back then with acid dipping the bodies and using fiberglass components wherever possible. If not for that, the Boss 302 Mustang was faster.

Wow! I wish the 'Stang had a rear facing camera after he passed the Camaro. Seemed like the Boss had some hp on the Z but the Camaro guy was more willing to trade paint.
Boss 302s can't be beat on the straights. They're top end monsters. He was toying with the Camaro on the straights until his tires were warm then it was bye.
I felt the spirits of Mr. Gurney, Parnelli Jones, Mark Donoghue, and all the other racers who raced the trans-am. And the early days of IMSA,Trans Am,WRC,WEC. Because they raced because they wanted too.
Driving as hard as Donahue and Penske ever did. Effing awesome. Seemed to me Camaro had slight edge in braking, low end, Boss had slight edge on handling and top end power Slight. Both drivers were aces.
You just described the very essense of their biggest differences. The Chevy 302DZ engine made it's power in the lower rpm range where the Boss302 engine was all about top end speed. I'd give the brakes to the Ford and the handling to the Chevy though.
Great racing! Great video! It would also be great if we could keep national poilitics out of vintage racing and just focus on the great cars, drivers and racing.
That's not true. Z28 302 cam was 455 lift whereas the Boss 302 cam had 540 lift. Both engines had near the same compression ratio. Both rated at 290 hp but in reality, the Boss 302 was 340 hp to the Chevy 310 hp. Boss 302 advantage was the 351 4v cylinder heads. All Boss 302 engines had 4 bolt mains. Only the '69 Camaro Z28 302 had 4 bolt mains. Bottom line, the Boss 302 was the more superior engine.
But the Camero had the superior front suspension. That helped them. The Mustangs were hampered by theirs. It was a mucked up setup. Okay for street driving but weak for anything more spirited. I had a '70 fastback as a daily driver for 17 years. Got a little spirited on the street in my youth. ;-)

I have watched that yellow Camaro several times at various corners. The front wheels are pointing in every direction except where they should be pointed. If that front end was set up better, he would be hard to pass. I do not know why that team has not figured it out yet. The other Camaros do not look that bad. The Mustangs are nice and smooth in the corners. I would rip that front end apart and try something different.
Is that an actual 302 Trans Am Camaro? Or is it just some other late 60s Camaro set up for racing, but with a 327 or 350? That's surprisingly not mentioned anywhere here, despite the fact that it's a pretty big detail. Assuming it is a 302 T/A Camaro, then it's impressive how closely matched those cars were with their Ford, AMC, Mopar rivals.
