Fun 10 minute talk on weatherby freebore an what it does ive heard alot of confusing comments saying a 25-06 rem with freebore like weatherby would equal it but that makes no sense due to case volume alone
Ryan how would you compare it to a .264 Win Mag? I’m pushing the 127 LRX’s out of my .264 at close to the same velocity but with about 85% case capacity. I’m assuming the RPM is more efficient????
So basically it's a .264 win mag, can push a 6.5 as fast as you want, I'm not sure why they keep reinventing what's already available, this cartridge might use less powder could be the only advantage but you'll pay for it in brass cost
I may have this wrong, but what exactly is this new cartridge bring to the table? It appears to fall between the 264 Win Mag and the 26 Nosler. I understand the 6.5 craze that is currently happening but I think this one is going to die a fast death unless it is not solely proprietary to Weatherby. It will surely die if it stays proprietary. The rifle offered is expensive and everyone knows that there is expensive ammo and then there is WEATHERBY expensive ammo. What about barrel wear? The 264 Win Mag was plaqued with that moniker so will this also be true for the 6.5 RPM? I believe there are better options for big game other than this. Would this be a niche cartridge? Just my thoughts. I do love these segments and seeing the comments that everyone shares!
I dont see it lasting either, as the 6.5 prc is the same performance, will be cheaper and more available. I wouldnt worry about barrel life: its a hunting round. For that reason, if i wanted a hotrod 6.5/26 cal id just go whole hog and get the 26 Nosler. Neither the prc nor the rpm excite me, as I can push the same weight bullet (130g) out of my 270 Win at the same velocity 🤷♂️
They spend all that money designing a cartridge that really doesn’t do anything that is not already out there but want $3,500. For the gun and twice as much for the ammo which you can’t find anywhere🤔😳
Revisited this cartridge talk. I think it’s worth mentioning that a benefit of the 6.5 hunting bullet in a given weight when compared to hunting with larger weights is the higher sectional density.
Seems pretty close to the 6.5 PRC. I loaded some 6.5prc up (127gr Barnes LRX. (Hornady new brass, WLRM primers, 58gr. H1000, loaded at 2.910” OAL) ) and am pushing 3119 with an ES of 4fps. Is the brass more expensive than 6.5prc? How many grains of powder is in a typical load?
I've got a buddy that built a custom weatherby chambered in 6.5 rpm. With 156 Bergers he's getting 2950. Apparently he can shoot out to 1,950 yards with it.
I want this cartridge to survive and thrive. In order to do that to compete head to head with the PRC, Weatherby is going to have to do some serious strategy here. Hornady over the years has had some great marketing success, and Weatherby for many years has had their devout cult following.
Out of curiosity, why do you prefer this to the PRC? Consumers generally seem to benefit from a smaller number of cartridges becoming more popular, as economies of scale and competition bring prices down. Conversely, I'm of the belief that market segmentation and the resulting higher profit margins are a major factor driving the introduction of new cartridges. As result, since the WBY RPM and PRC are quite ballistically similar, my preference would be to see only one succeed long term. A priori I don't have much preference which wins out, but given the PRCs substantial lead at this point I'm inclined to hope other manufacturers just stick with it and ignore the WBY RPM. Open to changing my mind though.
@@recurrenTopology It's a step above the PRC, about taking the place of the almost-antiquated 264 win mag (which I adore). It's a great cartridge for hunting. It's almost an apples to oranges comparison between the PRC and RPM, but not quite there.
My question is for Ryan. You May said this before but im wondering what is your favorite pill for hunting. Not cal. But the pill. Hows it's made in other words. Something for say 100 to 500 . Deer size game.
One thing that Ryan may have alluded to in passing, but I think needs to be emphasized.... This cartridge really is mostly for folks who shoot factory rifles and factory ammo. It is severely handicapped by the short action mag length. You have to stuff it with over 100 thousandths of jump to the lands. If you like to tinker and maximize accuracy and such, this cartridge is not for you unless you went completely custom on everything and then you're going to have to compare it to other wildcats and open a whole new box of comparisons.
should do a .458 win mag and the .458 lott. there is some cool history there with the possibly undeserved reputation of one leading to the creation of a legendary chambering.
I am going on 8 years with my AR 10 I've done a Pac Nor super match barrel in 6.5-284 Norma and what a great match for cartridge and AR 10. The Pac Nor barrel is 26 " / 1-8 twist. For game hunting deer or larger I am shooting the Norma Oryx and Vulcan in 156 grain
Blake, "you won't", is the answer to both questions. The 6.5WSM is a wildcat cartridge. I could build one but not sure I would want to shoot any magnum cartridge in a sub 5-lb gun. Most guys, that shoot a lot, (especially long range) reload. I like to spot my own shots, and am willing to pack around a heavier gun. Miami Slice, actually Weatherby claims they have a titanium version that is supposed to weigh 4.9-lbs with a $3600 price tag
They put “rebated” in the name not because that particular design element is important, but rather because it allowed them to create the cool-sounding “RPM” initials, which is catchy and helps the sales of cartridges and rifles.
I think you’re right. When my dad was still able to hunt his favorite mulie and antelope cartridge was the 264 Win Mag. He shot 140 Partitions from his Model 70 Westerner at 3100 FPS and got 5/8” groups using H870. My brother now has the rifle and has killed several nice mulie and pronghorn bucks with it at extended ranges. Awesome cartridge that was “crowded out” by the 7MM Rem Mag. EDIT: My brother now uses RL-22 to get nearly identical performance.
@@nmelkhunter1 You can get the same with Norma MRP, Federal 215, and WW Brass. I have taken a number of animals in NM with a 264 Win Mag. My pet load for deer and antelope is a 120 Nosler Ballastic Tip at 3,375. Never had to shoot any game 2X. I killed a bull above Ruidoso with 140 Grain Partitions and dropped him on the 1st shot. I re-barreled mine with a Wiseman 416 Stainless Steel barrel with a little freebore on a Winchester XTR action. Rifle is sub 1/4 MOA, 5 shot at 100 yards with hunting bullets.
I am a big WBY fan, nothing like a belted magnum, however when reloading it appears the PRC can actually outperform the RPM. In some ways this Talk is confusing. The velocity numbers for the WBY are with a 26 inch barrel, don't see them around very much.WBY talk channel are saying the numbers are off around 200 ft slower for the 127 lrx then on the box.I love shooting WBY however I need more data to convince me the RPM is an upgrade to the PRC right now I just don't see it.
@@rockylavigna5977 Then you'd probably be okay to keep your PRC to be honest. However, if you ever want to decrease weight, you have the option to look into this platform. It's one of those not for everybody cartridges
For hunting I would use the Swift Scirocco 130grs. For long range I load the 153 A Tip. Fantastic performance. Weatherby should chamber it in their Vanguard rifle as well.
Can we argue the hard to lift bolt handles and sticky cases people have been getting with factory ammunition. I’m no stranger to loading hot but factory rounds….geeze! AND you guys need to neck this up to .277 with a 1-7.5 twist. 156 hammer hunters would be awesome in that!
The 284 Winchester was originally chambered in the Winchester model 88 lever action rifle before the 284 was offered in the Winchester model 100 rifle.
This cartridge and rifle was first built by TSE in Brisbane as a one of custom for a customer and Weatherby fan, when it came to getting a chamber reamer in the US the project was leaked to Weatherby and they quickly came up with their own version
It's an objectively good cartridge, but it's just too close to 6.5 PRC for me. It's definitely faster, but you can easily get within 100 fps with the PRC, and I really don't think that's enough to be worth the significant increase in ammo cost and decrease in rifle selection (especially if you're a lefty). If it was consistently over 150 fps faster I might give it more credit, but for only 100 fps you've gotta be a pretty hardcore Weatherby fan to not just get a 6.5 PRC.
The benefit I see (for reloaders) is the long skinny brass lasting longer than short and fat brass, and for all shooters, being less finicky and feeding better. But I can definitely agree that ballistically it may be ahead of a PRC, but not lifetimes ahead.
@Idaho Hunter True that, but if you're not a handloader, I struggle to justify any Weatherby chambering at the best of times, as factory ammo is simply too expensive and scarce. 280 AI suffers from the same problem; on paper, it's arguably the best all-around cartridge I've ever seen, but if you're not a handloader it's a waste of time because factory ammo barely exists.
@@gpearce11 If the gun is of hunting and not target practice, once sighted in, a box of ammo should last a while. Sportsman's Warehouse seems to always have the 127 in stock. The same argument could be made regarding drinking expensive vs cheap whiskey, and I bet most people will spend more regularly on whiskey than ammo. Drink what you like!
Its just more efficient with its case volume and won't have all the leftover airspace in the case, but velocity per bullet weight should be about the same. The 264 Win mag I had was a model 70 (browning made) and all factory would shoot .25" 100 yard groups. 264 win mag is still great.
I'd consider the 6.5 RPM and 6.5 PRC almost equals. About the same difference you see 6.5 Creed and 260 Rem 👍🙏✌ looking forward to the next cartridge pick 😁
I agree, and I think it's the biggest issue for the 6.5 RPM. It's technically better than the 6.5 PRC (especially factory loads), but definitely not by enough to be worth the significantly higher cost of ammo and limited rifle selection.
6.5 PRC looks like it matches or exceeds it. More efficient case design, same velocities. 6.5 PRC 135gr A-TIP at 3200fps vs 6.5 RPM 127gr LRX at 3225fps. I see a lot of 6.5 PRC on the shelves over the past year, lots of rifles chambered in it as well.
I agree. For the cost of Weatherby ammo you can buy custom handloads for the PRC that meet or exceed the RPM velocities. I have an RPM but only because I love the Backcountry TI rifle.@@LRRPFco52
I feel like the 6.5 RPM has as much hype as the 6.5 Creed when it was introduced. I can see this topping the 300 WBY in terms of the most popular Weatherby cartridges.
I would love a 6.5 rpm. I’m about to sell my 6.5 creedmoor and get the rpm😂 I have the 257 wby and I love it. I’ll never buy a 30-06 or a 270 win etc in my life again. I’m suprised the weatherby cartridges aren’t stomping all over Winchester sales wise.
That would be nice. I would say it never gained the popularity it deserved, but I believe bullet selection back then hurt it some. It would be hard to beat as a dedicated elk cartridge in my opinion.
@noahhorinek I'd imagine with a newer rifle 65,000psi is definitely attainable, I'm not saying your wrong, and I'm not saying that the RPM isn't a better case. But when you have a cartridge that's been around since 1958 or so, and then a new cartridge that's almost a twin ballistic wise come out in the last few years, 60+ years later. There's a bit of a stretch on wallets and attention spans at that point. Like why get a 6mm Creedmoor when your .243 win has been doing just fine.
the goal was to maximize performance within the space available in the Mark V 6-lug action ==> success PS - more velocity = less drop and less drift for a given bullet over a given distance

Maybe if you like the AR 10 have one made .
I build AR 10 uppers for sale in all of the WSM magnums the 6.5 PRC - in 6.8 Western - 358 win
Fun 10 minute talk on weatherby freebore an what it does ive heard alot of confusing comments saying a 25-06 rem with freebore like weatherby would equal it but that makes no sense due to case volume alone
This truly makes this the most wonderful time of the year
Stay with the tested old timer the 264 Winchester magnum so if a reloader needs brass use 7 mm Rem brass.
🛑🛑 Guys….what are the comparisons between the 6.5 RPM Weatherby and the 6.5/300 Weatherby?
Ryan how would you compare it to a .264 Win Mag? I’m pushing the 127 LRX’s out of my .264 at close to the same velocity but with about 85% case capacity. I’m assuming the RPM is more efficient????
Nailed it.
Rpm is a very capable cartridge, however I do not see it ever being popular. Most doesn't even know it exists. The hot topic is PRC.
Could you do a quick talk about the 25wssm in a AR platform?
that cartridge had such an earned reputation for jamming rifles it helped tank the whole line.
So basically it's a .264 win mag, can push a 6.5 as fast as you want, I'm not sure why they keep reinventing what's already available, this cartridge might use less powder could be the only advantage but you'll pay for it in brass cost
264 won’t fit in the light weight 6 lug action. It’s a cartridge and rifle combo designed from the ground up for a sub 5 pound sheep rifle
What’s y’all’s favorite caliber for all purpose hunting med to large game
Revisited this cartridge talk. I think it’s worth mentioning that a benefit of the 6.5 hunting bullet in a given weight when compared to hunting with larger weights is the higher sectional density.
A higher sectional density will penetrate better but sometimes has less knock down affect.
I’m getting a little bit more velocity with my carbonmark pro. Either way it’s crazy accurate with that bullet and my powder combo.
You get the same with burgers factory loaded 6.5 prc ammo
I wondered where the Holiday Podcasts were this year....? Ok, next do the 338 RPM....
@@noahhorinek 👍
Another mention of the .284 win. Would love to see it on the show
Agreed!
Y’all still haven’t done 7.62x39
+1
300 Win Mag either
@@masone4589 I’ve been bad scoped by my 300 win so they can skip it.
@@joebob4609 gotta hold on like a grown man
Cuz it's an anemic piece of crap.
The 6.5 Remington magnum was a revolutionary cartridge. Fell the same way of the 284 ...... Chambered in the wrong rifles.
My question is for Ryan. You May said this before but im wondering what is your favorite pill for hunting. Not cal. But the pill. Hows it's made in other words. Something for say 100 to 500 . Deer size game.
Once again gold! Can you do 375 h&h?
1 hour talk on the 12 gauge !
I’m a fan of 6.5 -.284 Norma, 26” barrel 1-8 and pushing a 142gr ABLR @ 2940 fps with no pressure problems.. that’s hard to beat
3531 for the 6.5-300 wby mag
@@nicholasterrell1110😮 That's cookin'. Holy smokes.
I load my swede to 6.5-284 levels with 2 grains less powder. Not sure I want to dump in 20 more grains for 200-250 FPS that you get from the RPM.
I’ve got one and love it.
Great info, I agree with his opinion on Barnes bullets, / 127 grain, excellent in a 6.5-300 wby
Would love to see y’all talk about either 8.6 Creed or 375 Raptor.
Not a Weatherby fan, my 6.5WSM pushes a 153gr ATip at 3250fps
Very unfortunate cartridge when compared to the .300 weatherby, gives much better speeds with similar bullet weights.
I meant the 6.5 weatherby, not the wsm
Where do I buy factory ammo for that at? And sub 5 pound rifles chambered in that?
@@blakebell6720 Where are you going to find a sub 5 lb rifle chambered for 6.5 rpm? Its a .30-06 length action, 6.5 WSM is a .308 length action.
Requesting you review the 8mm Mauser.
It’s old. It’s fast. And it hits hard.
Thank you!
I'd love to hear what you guys think of the Weatherby 338/378
Why this over 7mm prc? Or 300 wsm
I think they shoulda kept the Double Radius.
Really interested in this cartridge and backcountry package.
Happy Huntin’.
They put “rebated” in the name not because that particular design element is important, but rather because it allowed them to create the cool-sounding “RPM” initials, which is catchy and helps the sales of cartridges and rifles.
😂 can’t turn left 👏🏼 awesome
Movie reference lol
Seems like the industry is trying to get back to a 264 Winchester Magnum. I shoot 120’s out of a 264 at 3,350 and 130 @3,200.
I have a 264 win mag. And does almost the same thing for half the price in ammo
@@jefferywilliams7687 It truly is an under appreciated cartridge. Have a happy New Year.
You guys are awesome, thanks again.
I am interested in 6.5 RPM to 6.5 Bitchcat comparison
Love the content. How about tenish minute talks on bullet selection for applications.
When will we get the next 6.5 bc update
I am a big WBY fan, nothing like a belted magnum, however when reloading it appears the PRC can actually outperform the RPM. In some ways this Talk is confusing. The velocity numbers for the WBY are with a 26 inch barrel, don't see them around very much.WBY talk channel are saying the numbers are off around 200 ft slower for the 127 lrx then on the box.I love shooting WBY however I need more data to convince me the RPM is an upgrade to the PRC right now I just don't see it.
You won't see it if you're looking for a better prc. It is not meant to be. It's basically a prc equal, but it comes in a sub 5lb rifle
the main reason is the rpm is in a lighter rifle
I get that totally however l bought several vanguards in PRC very nice guns. Then the RPM was released
@@rockylavigna5977 Then you'd probably be okay to keep your PRC to be honest. However, if you ever want to decrease weight, you have the option to look into this platform. It's one of those not for everybody cartridges
Does actual data reveal the RPM outperforms the PRC the data does not. Support that this is the reason I am reluctant to upgrade
Fellas, don't forget that the 6.5mm was one of Mr Weatherby's first magnum designs 70+ years ago, Ditto the .257 mag.
For hunting I would use the Swift Scirocco 130grs.
For long range I load the 153 A Tip.
Fantastic performance.
Weatherby should chamber it in their Vanguard rifle as well.
Respect on the 6 yr old I phone. Especially understanding the possible conditions of manufacturing.
Now something big and heavy, kinda like 416 rem mag
I know Ryan likes the 6.5 RPM. I’ve been thinking about the 257 but now leaning towards the 6.5x300. When’s the 6.5x300 episode coming out?
Can we argue the hard to lift bolt handles and sticky cases people have been getting with factory ammunition. I’m no stranger to loading hot but factory rounds….geeze!
AND you guys need to neck this up to .277 with a 1-7.5 twist. 156 hammer hunters would be awesome in that!
The 284 Winchester was originally chambered in the Winchester model 88 lever action rifle before the 284 was offered in the Winchester model 100 rifle.
Do 8.6 Blackout please!
Would love to see more on the American metric Nosler cartridges, particularly .27 Nosler.
@@gpearce11 I can understand that sentiment, can't argue there.
Sounds alot like the .264 Win Mag, which nobody seems to talk about anymore.
Its just more efficient with its case volume and won't have all the leftover airspace in the case, but velocity per bullet weight should be about the same. The 264 Win mag I had was a model 70 (browning made) and all factory would shoot .25" 100 yard groups. 264 win mag is still great.
But is it a barrel burner?
I'd consider the 6.5 RPM and 6.5 PRC almost equals. About the same difference you see 6.5 Creed and 260 Rem 👍🙏✌ looking forward to the next cartridge pick 😁
I agree, and I think it's the biggest issue for the 6.5 RPM. It's technically better than the 6.5 PRC (especially factory loads), but definitely not by enough to be worth the significantly higher cost of ammo and limited rifle selection.
I said the same about the 6.5 Rem Mag 35 years ago. The first real Short Mag. Still shottin it and love it.
Never will as long as it's not sold in a vanguard
I am a 30-06 man, but I am thinking of my next rifle. 6.5 Weatherby RPM or 6.5 -300 Weatherby.
It's going to be one of the best 6.5's
Let’s see the 7mm Remington Magnum
According the Sierra manual 6.5 PRC with 130 TMK is a 3100fps round at their optimal accuracy load.
264 win mag sometime?
257 Weatherby Magnum next please. Then 7mm Remington Magnum.
**Let’s have a discussion on the 6mm Creedmoor and why it is a dual purpose for hunting and popular in PRS competition
How about a cartridge talk on the 8mm Remington magnum, and you think it never gained the popularity it deserved?
Mountain man
That would be nice. I would say it never gained the popularity it deserved, but I believe bullet selection back then hurt it some. It would be hard to beat as a dedicated elk cartridge in my opinion.
As much as Ryan likes this cartridge, there's one very similar.. 264 win mag..
Yeah, but the good ol win mag maxes out on pressure before the load densities get high. The RPM doesn't have that problem.
Why is nobody talking about the 6.5 Sherman short magnum?
156 Berger at 3075 with a 26 inch barrel, no pressure issues.
#vortex nation please do a 6.5-284 talk it’s just cool cartridge
The problem with all weatherby cartridges is that if your not a hand
Loader you have limited bullet selection.
the goal was to maximize performance within the space available in the Mark V 6-lug action ==> success
PS - more velocity = less drop and less drift for a given bullet over a given distance
Can we get a cartridge podcast that is all about magnums, where the term comes from and what makes a magnum?
Need to do 7mm stw
Need to see the 6BR
