This song reaches deep for me. I feel like I understand exactly what this song is talking about, the place inside ourselves that this song is referencing, that tiny little spark that you have left that you hold on to like a candle in the darkness. I feel like Rufus has been there too or he wouldn't be able to sing it like this. And I feel like Dylan has been there too or he wouldn't have been able to write it. Thank you Rufus for turning the Dylan version into something even more magnificent, two greats are often better than one! You are a Wonder. When you sing it, somehow, it lifts, it provides a floor, puts my feet on it. I can land here if Rufus is singing it! It feels better to be honest that this is what life feels like, many times, rather than to pretend that it doesn't. Life can get hard, it can get mean, often to the people who deserve it least. This song is like armor. Beautiful melancholy. The fact that Dylan left "dark" for each of us to use as we see fit, it makes room for everybody. What a beautiful gesture in a very judgemental world. ❤❤ Two hearts, one for each of you! So glad to be alive with your music in my life.
I think it's pretty magical when a song or an Artist can do that for you. I had a dozen 12hr surgeries in the course of a decade. Seven of those surgeries were to rebuild my spine. When I had nothing, my music kept me alive. It was my only saving Grace to help me with the pain.
So beautiful. I appreciate every choice made with this version. Like, if you were going to elevate this song, because it is so important after all, every choice is perfect. To me it is talking about the darkest place we get to in our psyche, short of the worst. It is not talking about what happens before suicide, drug addiction, violence . . . It's not dark yet, and it stays there. Hoping all of you out there are able to stay there too. It's not dark yet, and it doesn't need to get dark. ❤️
The best version of this song since I first heard it sung by Dylan, who's version touches me like no one else has done, but this one comes the closest.
@@Natalie-ox7xm dear Natalie thanks for suggesting me to listen to this cover. It's one of the best I've ever heard. Aoife O'Donovan sings another wonderful cover. Thanks dear friend!
Rufus with your sensual and amazing voice and your marvelous style you filled with spell and poetry this masterpiece of Dylan.I never get tired of listening to you
Amazing cover! Rufus entered my life about 19 years ago. Just as I started high school and all the awkward growing pains. Every time he is in town, I go to his shows. Since I was very young when I was introduced, my mother took me to all his early shows. Many wonderful memories in Chicago... my mother and I bonded over his music and his beautiful voice. He is simply one of the few performers with natural talent, where his live version are better over studio. Its weird to say someone you never met, but his work has been part of all my life experiences. The journey of life. This one hits the spot this week. ❤
I've been on the Rufus trail for almost 20 years. This is one of the best of his recordings, please do more like this. All the best from Colorado, via Quebec.
It is very clear that in Rufus merged his musically ut-most gifted father Loudon and mum Kate McGarrigle - and do I hear his sis Martha back vocalling.. yeah !! And yeah... this one goes fine with my Hohner harmonica in a straight A - just breatin 'in & out..
Quelle magnifique voix. Elle est incroyable. Elle transmet tellement d'émotions qu'on ne peut pas être insensible. En plus il est très beau. Tout va ensemble 😄 j'espère qu'un de ses 4 je pourrais aller le voir en "vrai" 😄🥰
Love this. I question his change in the lyrics "I've still got the scars that the sun didn't let me heal". Prefer the original by far. But Rufus is always great by definition.
@@parkyourdogwithchrissie1596 He's certainly an excellent singer, but I felt he tried to wring too much angst out of a song already packed with it. I think my original comment was too dismissive though. It's a brave try at a tough song.

agree... this song is a masterpiece, and he brings his own to it without imitating Dylan.
the version by robyn hitchcock is much better
Astonishing. This is my favourite of Bob's songs. Rufus covers it with all the melancholy of the song. Thanks Rufus.
Lucinda Williams does a great job on this song as well
