  • In this video the history of printing is described, from the early cave paintings to the Laserwriter. We will look at the first pictographic writing on the Limestone Kish tablets. We'll see how Papyrus replaced parchment, or, animal skin, and how the book replaced the scroll. We'll discover how metal type, invented by Johannes Gutenberg, replaced block printing and the profession of scribes. We'll see how 'flat' printing was replaced by 'rotary' printing, making written information accessible to the public, by allowing newspapers to become more widespread. Discover how the 'Linotype' gave the production of books, magazines, and newspapers a big boost. Learn what happened during the 'photographic' revolution, called: 'Phototypesetting'. Learn how 'printing plates' are made, and how page layout was done by 'paste-up artists'. Learn about the first digital storage of written text on paper tape, and the first communication of punched paper cards with the first computers. Learn how magnetic tape, that originally had to be used to store data, was replaced by the hard-disk in 1962. See how the first computer-driven digital typesetters in 1966 made it possible, for the first time, to read and correct the text on a screen, before it went to output. Discover how the complicated chemical process, needed to print text, in the nineteen eighties could now be replaced by the emergence of the personal computer and laser-printer. And we'll see that the first desktop publishing program 'PageMaker', in 1985, would replace the profession of the paste-up artist.

Phototypesetting: Back in 1988 I worked at a small newspaper. They had a PC connected to a refrigerator-sized device that held the photo paper and the photo strip of type. The type was on a negative strip about 3" x 15" that wrapped around a holder like a cylinder.
