Tip: One way to track outages....I freeze the tall 8oz mason jar with water, then a place a quarter on top of the ice, put on a lid. I check the jar each time I open the freezer. If the quarter is not on top of the ice, it means it has melted and refrozen with the quarter further down in the jar. Not an original idea by me but it is good piece of mind after my one freezer mishap.

I clean my fridge out fully every 2 weeks usually the day before I stock up on groceries. I literally spend 5-10 minutes cleaning which is nothing in comparison to hours. I need to get better about our deep freezers, being pregnant makes me want to do it less since all the bending over 😅

So one thing that has helped me was a baby latch like for cabinets or something and it has a magnetic click lock … easy to hold the door shut and it keeps it closed unless in use, and my kids know to relatch the clip before they walk away so it’s never oooops i didn’t know the door didn’t seal or shut well. Super easy fix!

A hammer is a bad idea. You can break the pipes that lays inbetween the wireshelfs and contain freezemedia.
We always use hot water in saucepans on the shelfs, we let the hot steam melt the ice in the freezer. When it's all melted we clean it out.

With how much meat you have in that freezer you may want to think about purchasing a freezer alarm to help protect that investment. They are not that expensive and will alert you if your freezer door ever gets left open again in the future.

I went through a wildfire evacuation in July 2022, and lost everything in the fridge and upright freezer (power was shut off and everything thawed and got too warm). Even though the meat had been put into vacuum-sealed bags, it was better to be cautious than not. And then just recently the upright started acting weird (too much ice accumulation in the back was making it cycle a bit too loudly, and the top shelf was stacked too high with meat), and all it needed was a good defrosting and it was back to normal.
Your freezer needed a good once-over for sure, and maybe another round of "eating through your freezer" too. But you got it done, and my compliments to the kids who spotted the issue before it turned even more nasty.

Yeah, it's... stuck, looks like you need a hammer. We typically get it all out (when it's of course do-able, your situation is clearly so different right now), then use a regular blow dryer, not hot, not cool, just medium temp and move it around a lot, meanwhile you unplug the thing, or put it on de-frost, we unplug. Our freezer has a well in the bottom that the water pools into, we just put a shallow container there and empty it out, plus a lot of floor size rags/EU style mops. It's a chore, but it's so rewarding!!!

I have freezers I’m eating thru so I can do this. Maybe start this weekend. Just so you are aware, those vacuum sealed meats…hitting them with a hammer can put a small hole in them and break your seal. Also, that chicken and other meat you didn’t seal. Do it now. You may not get that “diaper” off the bottom, but seal it with it on. Frozen meat gives you a better seal. Whatever freezer damage it has won’t get worse if you seal it now. Nice job.

Just a query and meant in the nicest possible way.. maybe our country is different. But having that many freezers, I can’t see how it’s saving you money when you have so much in there or multiple freezers and it’s so expensive to have them running for power, it comes across as horderish, and spending more to keep food in the freezers, which you forget about

Utah has some of the cheapest energy prices in the US, roughly 11 cents per KWh now. Also, US grocery stores will sometimes slash prices on specific items to half to bring you into their store versus competitors.
She has a lot of videos on how to cook in bulk and so on to save money.

I didn't watch the whole video. Check gaskets around door for sealing. Sometimes they need reglued if something sticky got on them. Also, if the bottom shelf freezes in the back where water has dripped down the back of the freezer, the seal can come off there too.

Hammer is a no no.. although satisfying can do some damage.
Use either hot water in a pan in one of the shelves ( close the door and let the steam do the magic) or a hair drier ( obviously be careful with the water dripping- but I promise it is super fast)

Using a hammer on the iced-over shelves can damage the little hoses of freezing agents and ruin your whole freezer. As an alternative, you could put bowls with hot water on each shelf and let them sit with the door closed. They can defrost your freezer while you sort through the frozen goods. This method might need even more towels though
