Rodion Shchedrin (b. 1932) has been one of the major exponents of the late and post-Soviet musical landscape. His postmodern, neo-tonal style explores forgotten provincial Russian styles. His Concertos for Orchestra are a perfect example of this neo-folk approach; for example, in his Concerto No. 4, Shchedrin resurrects Slavonic musical rounds known as khorovods which are traditional in Southwestern Russia, Belarus and the Ukraine which mingle circle dancing and choral singing.

What a shame, a really dynamic piece...but marred by those shrill, shrieking screeching HORNS. Or is this just a poor arrangement? Maybe other versions have softer horns? I have to keep the volume low or it'll hurt my ears. Very unpleasant to listen to those.
