Members of a virtuoso orchestra give of their best in a stunning demonstration of virtuoso playing. Nowhere else (to my knowledge) does the brilliance of Schedrin's composition shine so brightly. These string players really show the virtually full range of the sound and emotion their instruments can give with playing that is tightly controlled yet very expressive. And the percussionists must have been truly delighted at this opportunity to fully display their skills and musicianship (particularly the marimba and similar tuned percussions). The ensemble so ably reflect the brilliance of the conductor they were losing, with Orozco-Estrada obviously breathing every note being played. Coupled with great sound engineering and camera work skilfully directed to bring the online audience in touch with every significant moment of this wondrous score.
I'm surprised by how these performances are working - the separation combined with fewer instruments is providing a sound with great clarity. The performances are superb. I believe you've discovered something rich, wonderful and strange. Thanks for these performances at a time when we need them.
Russian, Rodion Shchedrin, composed this music for his wife, the legendary ballerina, Maya Plisetskaya ("She always came back!" Khrushchev.). It was then choreographed by Cuban Alberto Alonso. Plisetskaya's life story is now a legend all by itself - more so because her career occurred on the cusp of what was to become the fall of the Eastern Bloc and huge technological changes including the rise of the Internet and also exposure of the West to Russian culture. It's the most beautiful music. I don't know if Plisetskaya ever danced Alberto Alonso's choreography but make the presumption Plisetskaya did - She was not one to let great opportunities slip away. So much of our musical history is slipping away with the rise of the digital world. I surmise that there's much to be found yet and transferred to digital storage from that interim technology, photo micro-graphs. These have an advantage in that everything in a document was captured, not just what a historian or musicologist thought was important. (Scanners - yes!) It's a terrible time to be a historian and a great time for those of ingenuity - a combination of geekiness and deep artistic and musical sensitivity makes for challenging work. I also approve of the Frizzo's (hr-Sinfonieorchester - Frankfurt Radio Symphony) now ever-growing archive of music. Maybe they have a way to go to catch Berliner Philharmoniker but Frizzo's archive is accessible while Berliner Philharmoniker is behind a paywall.
Exquisitely beautiful! Superb performance. Rodion Shchedrin's arrangement of Carmen is brilliant and so gripping and moving. Crystalline sound, you can hear every single note! Thank you! I have truly enjoyed every second of it. 👍👏💚👍🙏
Thank you, again and again, for the wonderful performances during this strange time in our life! Obligated to stay at home and still in the concerthall!
Carmen, sempre linda.
Bravo! That tam-tam and bell combination at the end is so perfect and so Russian. I hope Maestro Andrés brings Rodion Shchredin’s music to the Houston Symphony.
I don't have many words to express how touched I am of seeing them playing in these moments! Art and culture bringing warmth to our souls. ¡Bravo Andrés!
An interesting replay of this famous Bizet opera, romantic and very lyrical, as a more contemporary musical work, strong in percussion instruments and without the voices of the opera singers. It is a variation (or a series of variations) that the hr sinfonieorchester present in an impeccable "coronavirus setup". The conduction of Orozco-Estrada results in a contained, tense, dancing, rhythmic representation of the splendid, sentimental, dramatic, rather heavy Bizet' masterwork. I am thankful for this quarantine consolation and for a novel musical experience.
What more can I say about this orchestra and Estrada! They are both fantastic and the quality of the camera work also! Thank you all for the joy you give us! The first time I heard Shchedrin' Carmen was more then 50 years ago (I was in my early 20s), and was driving. I was so surprised that I parked to be able to hear it attentively and I never quite understood if it was just a joke on Bizet or something ekse. I still don't! So sorry I can't applaud!
not a joke, i actually just ran a search and he and his wife were making a ballet out of the Bizet opera. They got in trouble with the russian ministry of culture because they said Carmen was showcased as a whore when she was a heroin for the Spanish or something like that, and that they were basically shitting on Bizet's opera (yikes) anyway old drama from the 60s or whatever en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carmen_Suite_(ballet)
it's really good now that you look upon it and compare both. however you can tell why it was such a scandal back then with the conservative bureaucrats from the Russian ministry. Like, some of the arrangements are soo modern in comparison to the original. For example this marimba part at 38:49 must have been outrageous for some people because the original one is super iconic.
We have all heard, seen or experienced what the investments of people around the world have given to all of us... in this time in our generation. And I want to say this is truly at the top of my list. Thank you! Covid vaccine is expected to be allocated in the USA this coming week,... so perhaps the moments like these will soon be be in our live experiential grasp. Merry Christmas to everyone. Also, excellent and innovative moments found in the camera work here.
Tschechisch: Tak ta Ščedrinova úprava... No, zní to trochu jako Carmen v podání nějakého lázeňského orchestru. :-) Nejvíc mě ale zaujaly PROFESIONÁLNÍ KASTANĚTY !! :-) :-) Ty jsou neuvěřitelné!
could someone confirm me which one is the instrument used in the march of the toreros? 38:51. Is it marimba right? The one from mexico. Anyway, there are many instruments in this performance alike the xylophone, so it wouldnt surprise me if one of them is a marimba, is just that i cannot recognize exactly which one is
I don't know if you still want to know, but that is definitely a marimba, and you can tell because the keys are made of wood, but it's much bigger than a xylophone. The instrument at 09:40 is a vibraphone and the keys are metal - you can also see that is bounces up and down because it has a pedal that sustains the notes (it moves up when you put your foot on the pedal). At 7:11, that is a glockenspiel which is by far the smallest and has metal keys. Because it's so small, it has a very high pitch. It's also the only one of these instruments where the mallets are hard.
I've been watching up until 16:45 only so far and not even once found a spot out of sychronicity. I do hope the synchronizing stays that perfect as it is till the finale.

Estrada is one of my favorite conductors! He is able to convey the feeling of the music very well. Thank you for the performance!

Magnifique.
And this is why you are my favorite symphony orchestra. Thanks, heartfelt thanks.
What a wonderful performance! Thank you. Shchedrin's homage to Bizet. (What great music would Bizet have given us if he had not died so young.)
Beim Anhören konnte ich nur durchgehend lächeln... Was für ein Werk und was für eine Interpretation.
