- "Recording Bach’s complete Six Sonatas and Partitas has long been a dream of mine ... All his music is suffused with emotion and exudes a life-affirming joy." Discover Augustin Hadelich's recordings of these landmark violin works: w.lnk.to/ahbLY
On how he adopted certain historically informed approaches for this recording, Augustin explains, "It was a revelation for me to play these works with a baroque bow ... It becomes easier to produce buoyant, light articulation, and harder to produce a loud, sustained sound. It felt liberating to play Bach with a baroque bow: I found I could strike the strings with more energy, but without having to worry that the sound might become too rough or expressionistic. Passages of three- and four-note chords felt more fluid. The dance movements danced more and the slow movements sang more."

Lieber Augustin

This is great. Although I still wish I knew the whole story behind the fact that Bach’s lute suite No 4 has the exact same gavotte for the 3rd movement, as his Violin Partita No 3-the exact same melody, just different instruments. One is a lute and one is a violin but it’s the same piece. I know Bach is a well known recycler, but which one was it actually written for? My guess is the violin, but that’s not based on any theory (because I know very little), I’m just basing it off of the fact that the violin sounds much more natural during certain parts (specifically this part of the piece, as where the lute/guitar has this “transcribed for guitar” feel. But that’s not exactly a scientific way to look at it.
