I think Biden requested no audience
He didn't decide. Trump could have refused, so it is the two principals who are making the decision. How is watching the president on TV not watching him first-hand? You are watching live. Second-hand or third-hand is when someone tells you what happened because you didn't see it yourself.
When in the White House does the president have a live audience of hundreds? Are these two people auditioning to host late-night TV shows or to be president?
Under a few conditions....
1 - if anyone rambles off the topic to rant about something with nothing to do with the question - their mic gets cut off
2 - if anyone shouts over the opponent and steals their talking time, their mic gets cut off
3 - if anyone leaves their podium to skulk around the stage while the other person is talking, the debate stops until they are returned to their podium and then the other person reclaims their remaining answer time
4 - the debate gets pre-recorded and if the moderator fails to enforce the above rules, it does not get broadcasted
