Interesting breakdown of the ranks. My understanding is, that the costume/representation of rank was re-jigged for Motion Picture and then again for Wrath of Khan by Robert Fletcher - that pretty much stuck until TNG when the Pip system was brought in.
But I would love to see with future Star Trek, and I think I speak with many fans on this point, is an episodic show, where a ship with a bold crew aboard explore space, and a different episode with a different plot each week. That is what TOS and TNG gave us. Gene Roddenberry always said. (and the person might argue that he was only a product of his time) that he did not want episodes linked up together, which has been the style since Lost aired over 20 years ago. Star Trek was not supposed to be a different miniseries every season, nor was it supposed to be a war show. And occasional episode with a battle in it is one thing, but that is different than having an entire season long arc focusing on war. I hope the new shows that we get under Sky Dance can return back to the basic formula. I know that is what many fans would really love to see.
My answer to the pon farr comment. In the mid 23rd century - the USS Intrepid is completely crewed by Vulcans, so Im getting the idea that Vulcans serving on human ships is RARE, and Vulcans keep to themselves.
15:05 you are in error. the original pilot already happened before Star Trek Discovery and before SNW started . there was a flashback episode in Discovery that established that. so the doctor you mentioned already retired. at some point M'Banga will be demoted after some violation he commits and Mccoy will replace him as chief medical officer
@NitpickingNerd Nope, Larry's talking about the OTHER doctor (Piper) - NOT the one in the original pilot (Boyce) - who served with Kirk at the beginning of Kirk's 5-year mission in 2265. Watch WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE. McCoy did not immediately replace M'Benga. Piper was between them.
head canon - MBenga left to be part of the Federation Medical Exchange and came back for a short rotation supervising a new intern who is named but not shown with a temporary and grave reduction in rank.
@@LarryNemecekTrekland I have a sneaking suspicion that Strange New Worlds will be more interested in introducing McCoy than Piper, but if that happens I'll just assume Piper was on temporary assignment while McCoy was away in WNMHGB. Similar logic can already be applied to Alden, who was originally the communications officer before Uhura.
The thing with Star Trek and Time Travel: Up until the Star Trek 'Reboot' movie by Abrams, it was 'canon' that any time anyone went into the past, they changed the future, and only in their 'native time line'. Thus, no Alternate Universe was created. Then we had the TNG episode "Parallels', which seemed to say that every decision spawns a new 'universe', then the Abrams movie. Going by this 'New Normal', it should be that, with the Romulans changing the details of Khan (and the Eugenics Wars, maybe) they only made another Alternate Universe. Truth is, like it or not: if Paramount says that Strange New Worlds exists in the same 'canon' that The Original Series is set in, than that's the simple fact.....until someone comes along and changes it, again 😏
We need to appreciate the gift Mike McMahan gave us in that last episode of Lower Decks, by giving us an in-universe opening to allow for what many of us have been saying for nearly a decade, and it is the simplest explanation for this entire mess that Kurtzman has given us. DSC, and everything spun off from it, is in al alternate timeline. It's still canon in the sense that the Mirror Universe and the Kelvin Timeline are canon, but not a part of the mainline canon timeline that includes TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, or the first ten movies. There is no need to reconcile SNW with TOS, because they're not in the same timeline. We no longer need to ignore our lying eyes. The only new Trek show that's part of the main canon timeline is Lower Decks (i was going to include Prodigy, but they apparently mentioned the synth uprising on Mars, which is a DSC universe event, so sorry, it's off to the alternate timeline with DSC and its progeny).
Except that was a joke. McMahon specifically stated: "Was I being a little stinker with that moment and knowing what I was doing? Yeah. I’m not dumb. It’s also not firmly established. Another multiversal shift we saw is it turned into a Klingon sail barge. You can take that moment however you want, and talk to me about it in ten years." Don't get me wrong - you are free to have whatever headcanon you like, and we respect your right to do so. But Larry and I went into this exercise with the intent of rectifying these things. We decided from the get-go that saying "DSC and SNW are an alternate timeline" was too easy, so we avoided falling back on that. Again, if you don't like our explanations, totally cool. Ultimately it's totally irrelevant either way. To quote Shatner: "It's just a TV show!" lol
@ The card has been played, jokingly or not, and shoving the whole kit and kaboodle into an alternate timeline resolves EVERYTHING in one fell swoop. There is no upside to tying up the canonical timeline into a Gordian knot just to keep SNW there, despite the bloody obvious, it doesn’t fit in any way whatsoever. Alternate timeline, done and dusted. Take the win, let’s move on.
@@CaptRobertApril The upside is that it's an interesting logistical exercise. Again, dismiss it if you will; nobody's asking you to watch. We did this for fun. Move on, indeed.
@@CaptRobertApril All the "options": shown when spinning the "transformational wheel" of the S-field are "alternates," INCLUDING PRIME. Showing up there is not an indication of being "not-Prime." Otherwise, they'd never get back to "pure" Prime in the end.
Also, if I can "continue", TOS and TNG had show Bibles that specified the characters. What is the point of making a prequel and having characters be different - even if somehow you could say that it doesn't violate canon because of some technicality or passage of time? Again, this all seems to be an insult to all the people that created the original Star Trek. It says that the decisions that they have made to create those characters is somehow inferior or wrong and that we could do better.
No, Cannon is saying that Spock is not like a teenager on snw, and it's fine for nurse chapital slap him in the face. Canon is saying that you need a necessary science fiction and not a war story like Star Trek Discovery seasons 1 and 2. Canon is saying don't make Klingons in masks so they can't act. Canon is saying that the gorn were used to tell us that mankind will evolve based on his empathy and understanding of his enemy. It's not a silly one-dimensional villain that you can rip off alien. Canon is saying don't tell Pike what his future is because it destroys the dramatic value of his character if he believes his future is fixed. Canon is saying don't make silly musicals with K-pop Klingons. Canon is saying don't have Spock's sister, and don't make Spock have ADHT. Canon is saying don't put flame throwers on the bridge. Why bother anymore? It's all just a mess.
