I remember pinchos (shish kabob) used to be sold at one dollar back when I was a kid in Puerto Rico. Good ol' memories. We would eat them at the beach and were part of a traditional Puerto Rican bbq. The ketchup and mayo sauce, also has garlic and vinegar if made the traditional way, and we call it mayoketchup.
I’m puertorican and I’ve lived in the states and the island and I can assure you a lot of the times I don’t like puertorican food from the states doesn’t taste the same why I either cook or wait to go back to the island. And God bless your father he’s adorable. 🙏🏽❤️

When I worked in New York City, I would go to a Puerto Rican luncheonette that had very similar food. My favorite was the rice like you have with a Chicken Fricassee Stew that was so delicious. I would get it multiple times a week. Thanks for reviewing this delicious looking food form Puerto Rican's Dream Food Truck. Excellent video.
I am Puerto Rican from San Juan, PR with roots from all around the island and I have to say some Puerto Ricans do not like the traditional food. So; no apologies needed!! Most of us do love many of our traditional food and I am very honored you got to try "at least one way" of the many delicious ways that all the things you tried are made daily at Puerto Rico. 🎉🎉🎉 Thank you and as we say in Spanish: ¡Buen provecho! (It's a bless: 'May your body enjoys the food!' 😉😌🙏🏼) 💞💞💞
Puertorican here I would recommend for appetizers alcapurrias they are green banana fritters with meat in them sometimes beef sometimes pork filled. Relleno de papa is also very good it is a potato and beef fritter. Bacalaitos if they have them as well are amazing they are cod batter fritters. As for mains mofongo is always good it consists of mashed plaints, garlic and chicharron it tends to be dense a lot of the times most of the time they offer it with some sort of stock or sauce and that helps cut through the density. Pasteles are also a big puertorican staple especially around the holidays the batter consists of cassava, green bananas and or green plantains with a pork filling with peppers and green olives it is a softer texture and very much loved. For dessert we are very known for our flans, our tres leches, tembleque and several others. Hope this helps in some way!
My favorite time of day!!!!!of all these….id get the empanadas…i love empanadas…there my fav to eat!!!!and they looked delicious❤ Another awesome review❤❤
THE RICE IS CALLED ARROZ CON GANDULES, ITS YELLOW RICE WITH PIGEON PEAS. AND WE DO LIKE IT WITH GREEN OLIVES. THE SAUSE IS CALLED MAYO KETCHUP, IT MAYO AND KETCHUP TOGETHER WE PUT THIS ON THE EMPANADAS
In PR they like balance spices such as garlic, different types of peppers, onions, chorizo, ham, oregano, olives, azafrán, tomatoes, salt, olive virgen olive oil and pork skin. It's combined for seasoning or marinate according to the recipe. Some recipes require a fruit sauce such as tamarind sauce, pineapple sauce, guava sauce, etc... We don't enjoy much hot spicy food. If we have hot spicy food is with a hot spicy sauce on the side. Pork is the favorite red protein but seafood is the number one primary protein. Try bacalaito, seafood empanadas, fry fish in"escabeche", any kind of mofongo, and plenty of different recipes made with local roots. Better off... Just go to PR and enjoy everything directly from the island and under the sun by the beach.
Hi Penny & Dad- YUM! Everything looked tasty. Once in a blue moon I’ll make homemade empanadas. I make mine with ground beef, golden raisins, onions, and spices in a red tomato sauce. Sooo good, but A Lot of work. I definitely am VERY particular about potato salad. I’m a potato salad snob & usually will only eat mine. Garlic bread looked very good. Great review. Sending love to you both. ❤️🤍💙
Hi Penny and George! Those dishes looked really good. Good review! I've always wanted to try the alcapurrias, but not sure if the food trucks serve them. Looking forward to tomorrows video. Hope you've had a good night ☺❤🙏
I appreciate your honesty in trying our food. Yes I can see how our potato salad may seem bland because we only use mayonnaise has the base with some shredded onion unlike US potato salad that has mustard too. I personally like both styles of potato salad but I’m more used to it with mayonnaise on its own. The white sauce I think it’s aioli and the pink one is mayo ketchup usually it’s made with a hint of garlic and served with tostones (plantain fritters) and/or sorullitos (cornmeal fritters). I agree with your dad on the empanadillas tasting better on their own. I enjoyed watching him chow down on our food without hesitation jaja thank you for keeping it real.
Hi Penny! Puerto Rican food is usually not spicy, just very savory and a lot if flavor. Glad you both enjoyed it, me and my daughter like watching your videos.
Youll be surprised, it is the same cut of pork on both dishes , its shoulder , what changes is the cooking method, one is grilled on the pinchos , and the other is roasted slow and low thats why is so tender,
We serve mayoketchup. We put garlic and sometimes just a drop or two of hot sauce. 😉 The other mayo is probably just a classic french/italian influence of a mayonnaise/aioli.
I thank you both for sharing this amazing genuine UA-cam video. I would like to see your expressions if you try one of our deserts called "FLAN" I fwd this video to friends and family. GOD BLESS 🇵🇷😁👍🇺🇲 🙏🏼❤🙏🏼
Glad thar you tried Puerto Rican food 🇵🇷 . Puerto Rican food is not spicy, but but well seasoned. Potato salad is not traditional, it was incorporated into Puerto Rican cuisine because of the American influence to Puerto Rico. Not everybody knows how to make Potato salad, I believe. I eat only my own. The rice con gandules (pigeon peas), and peril (roast pork) is traditional Puerto Rican food. You can get it at any Puertorriqueño (Puerto Rican restaurant, food truck, dinner, or home. The Pincho is usually grilled with barbecue sauce. Pork and seafood is very common in Puerto Rican food. The patelillos (enpanadas) are traditionally with beef or shrimp. However, you can make it out of anything you want. The beef is called picadillo. The sauce is called mayokeshup. It used as a sauce for everything in Puerto Rican and other Latino countries fried finger foods. It made to cut off the oiliness of fried foods. I prefer it without the sauce. There were other traditional foods you didn't try. Mofongo, pasteles, pastelon, alcapurrias, rellenos de papa, piononos, and bacalaitos are traditionally Puerto Rican food. Tostones or (find green plantains) or amarillos (find sweet plantains) are traditional and is eaten with most every protein, as a side dish. Stewed proteins with white rice is popular. Chicken or seafood soup is popular. Salads may be accompanied with some dishes. We make tacos and pasta currently in modern Puerto Rican cuisine. Our proteins are either fried, boiled, broiled, grilled, steamed, roasted, or stewed. We eat root vegetables as side dishes. We also eat a lot of rice🍚. Piña Cola was invented in Puerto Rico so it's a very traditional cocktail. Coquito (Our version of eggnog) is a Christmas drink made out of coconut 🥥, is very traditional. Our breads are good. Flan (custard) is a very popular desert ( and there are others)😋 ❤. Glad you have enjoyed our food. You need to try more of our delicious cuisine. Great video! 😊
I love to see people trying our food and get surprised by the flavors , because people usually think spanish food is all spicy , we do use a lot of spices but not hot spicy. Your dad likes to eat, and I love how adventurous, you guys are!!! Congrats on a great video!!!!
$15.00 for a plate of rice and some pork is rather steep. Over here where I am we can get a hefty plate for around 9.00 . There's nothing like that's made and sold on the island of Puerto Rico. There's this area that's called the "pork highway" yup, that's what the locals refer to it as. The pork is so tender, juicy, and ridiculously delicious it's great. It's one of those places you have to visit if you want the true Puerto Rican experience instead of holding up in some resort.
Penny you got the Arroz con Gandules is yellow rice with pigeon peas not chick peas and pinchos they supposed to be grilled but this food trucks what they do is boiled the meat and then grilled it and that’s why the meat is kind of tuft but you should take a trip to the island remember Puerto Rico is part of the United States you don’t need a passport and I love you guys
I suggest come to Puerto rico so that you don’t have to go to one reataurant and order the whole menu, you can eat each dish from the best restaurant that makes them 😉
,@@pennystwocents, I wouldn't recommend mofongo for George. It's too dense. If you enjoyed the empanadas you should try the pastelon de carne. It's like the Puerto Rican lasagña but using ripe plantain instead of pasta.
Puertorican food is sweet and savory not spicy. Its carribean food very different from Mexican food. You have to go to the island to eat the real thing or a an authentic puertorican restaurant and it has to be in Florida or New York where theres a huge concentration of puertoricans and puertorican ingredients. In other states its not the same at all they don’t have the same ingredients to cook it with. The food is 10/10 its literally one of the most delicious savory foods out there. Piña colada was created in Puerto Rico so you can get an idea. Also the sauce its called ‘mayoketchup’ it has mayo, ketchup and garlic in it , it can also be made without the garlic. Loved your video and God bless your father hes so cute🩷
first off i think it's great that you are sharing your culinary experiences with your father. i think the price of the first plate was a bit too high.....but not a scam. pernil is almost always good. the yellow rice is just plain normal rice cooked with something that colours it. most people use annato. it's the seeds of a plant that when heated, release a red dye. people heat it with oil and then use that oil for colouring their food. i make my yellow rice with paprika and turmeric. i'm not a fan of annato. the yellow rice also usually includes some spices and is more stewed than just boiled. and just like that restaurant i usually ad olives when i make it with pigeon peas....i just love olives. pinchos are very common here. it's just that, meat on a stick broiled over a flame. there's one place within walking distance of my house....and if i'm willing to drive a few minutes there are several others. i heard someone describe our food as "spicy but not hot". we use a lot of spices. but the level of heat is low. in many places they have hot sauce available, for those who like the heat. ah that sauce is mayoketchup. mayo and ketchup ar ethe main ingredients, in most places they also add a bit of black pepper, garlic and olive oil. and maybe a pinch of paprika. it goes well with fried foods. some people even use it as salad dressing.
Pernil with yellow rice. Puerto Ricans do not cook with spicy food. It's mainly with garlic and cilantro and other ingredients. You can add the liquid spice to it on your own.
That's your daddy, you should share plates!!! You're getting closer to me neighbor, literally right down the street! Go try the birria tacos at Las Tapias Birria on Norton if you haven't, you won't be sorry my friend ;)
Oh I LIKE this video! I've never been to a food truck! All in all a fun video :) I doctor up everybody's potato salad. I'm super finicky about it and it has to have dill and onion. No mustard or whatever is fine as long as those two things are in it so it wouldn't bother me that it was bland. I would love to try the rice and pulled pork!!! I would pass on that meat on a stick and steal all the garlic bread :) I've only had a chicken and cheese empanada from Taco Bell but I loved it. Wish we knew what that white sauce was, I would like to try to make it. The only thing I would worry about is eating spices your body isn't used to ;) just sayin ;) LOL
Mami you need a Malta with that food, you ruined your experience with the roots beer…😂😂😂 still love this video, is the closest thing to breaking the spaghetti in front of an Italian or each sushi with fork… please repeat this video…
Very difficult to get the real Puerto Rican flavor from any business outside the island. There are less than 500 hundred places in the US where you can eat real puertorican flavor typical food. And the variations of flavor on the island are just huge! But anyway we appreciate your interest in try it!

,@@pennystwocents, I wouldn't recommend mofongo for George. It's too dense. If you enjoyed the empanadas you should try the pastelon de carne. It's like the Puerto Rican lasagña but using ripe plantain instead of pasta.
@@lzdelgado9247 omg that sounds yummy.
Awww Thank you so much Amelia.
Try alcapurrias, flan, mofongog, pastelon, sea food, bacalaitos, rellenos de papá, bariguitas de vieja.
@@2sabiduria Thank you 2sabiduria. We will have to try those.
Wepa, wepa wepa where is the avocado yummy and the pasteles sauce is mayo and ketchup mixed Puerto Rico in the house
Tip for anyone who's trying puertorican food since some of it it's fried it is best eaten right after cooked.
@@felipesantiago8041 Thank you Felipesantiago. 😊

Coco Rico, etc , it will give a full effect.
@@Margie717 Thank you Margie. We will have to try the sodas too next time.
first off i think it's great that you are sharing your culinary experiences with your father.
i think the price of the first plate was a bit too high.....but not a scam.
pernil is almost always good.
the yellow rice is just plain normal rice cooked with something that colours it.
most people use annato.
it's the seeds of a plant that when heated, release a red dye. people heat it with oil and then use that oil for colouring their food.
i make my yellow rice with paprika and turmeric. i'm not a fan of annato. the yellow rice also usually includes some spices and is more stewed than just boiled. and just like that restaurant i usually ad olives when i make it with pigeon peas....i just love olives.
pinchos are very common here. it's just that, meat on a stick broiled over a flame. there's one place within walking distance of my house....and if i'm willing to drive a few minutes there are several others.
i heard someone describe our food as "spicy but not hot". we use a lot of spices. but the level of heat is low. in many places they have hot sauce available, for those who like the heat.
ah that sauce is mayoketchup.
mayo and ketchup ar ethe main ingredients, in most places they also add a bit of black pepper, garlic and olive oil. and maybe a pinch of paprika.
it goes well with fried foods. some people even use it as salad dressing.
Pernil with yellow rice. Puerto Ricans do not cook with spicy food. It's mainly with garlic and cilantro and other ingredients. You can add the liquid spice to it on your own.
❤
Seeing the food the prices are acording to the cost of life in USA
Come to PR and try all delicious dishes we have here
Oh yes the Authentic Puerto Rican Cuisine would be the best.
That's your daddy, you should share plates!!! You're getting closer to me neighbor, literally right down the street! Go try the birria tacos at Las Tapias Birria on Norton if you haven't, you won't be sorry my friend ;)
Thanks Kiki. We will have to check them out.
The rice is yellow rice with pigeon peas.
Ve ne zue lan 😂 that made me laugh
👍
Oh I LIKE this video! I've never been to a food truck! All in all a fun video :)
I doctor up everybody's potato salad. I'm super finicky about it and it has to have dill and onion. No mustard or whatever is fine as long as those two things are in it so it wouldn't bother me that it was bland. I would love to try the rice and pulled pork!!! I would pass on that meat on a stick and steal all the garlic bread :)
I've only had a chicken and cheese empanada from Taco Bell but I loved it. Wish we knew what that white sauce was, I would like to try to make it.
The only thing I would worry about is eating spices your body isn't used to ;) just sayin ;) LOL
There wasn't really any crazy spices going on. Very fun to try. Those empanadas were yummy.
Pollo guisado
Carne guisado
Both with white rice and sweet plantains.

If u was to go to a Puerto Rican restaurant u should try alcapuria and mofongo
I will have to try those next time. Thank you Octane.
Mami you need a Malta with that food, you ruined your experience with the roots beer…😂😂😂 still love this video, is the closest thing to breaking the spaghetti in front of an Italian or each sushi with fork… please repeat this video…
My buddies
Hi Vit. Hope you are having a great evening.
We aren’t known for potato salad so it’s ok ❤
Empanadas we call empanadillas or pastelillos, depending on where on the archipelago you are. 👍🏽
The pastelillos/empanadillas are also not the most authentic boricua dish. They’re just another play or version of an empanada.
Like beef jerky ❤🥰
Very difficult to get the real Puerto Rican flavor from any business outside the island. There are less than 500 hundred places in the US where you can eat real puertorican flavor typical food. And the variations of flavor on the island are just huge! But anyway we appreciate your interest in try it!
U can order pincho with chicken too
Hi penny
Good afternoon Janice.
