      Except the awful mix
Not only the absent bass, but the guitar tone isn't that great
I prefer RTL, but AJFA is my 2nd favorite, such a shame it was mixed and mastered in a toaster

It’s from the box set. You can slightly hear the bass in it, but they would actually have to remix it to get full on bass.

    • @GeekFurious
      @GeekFurious 3 роки тому +8

You've ALWAYS been able to hear the bass, people just believed you couldn't so they didn't. If you think I'm lying, just play both versions next to each other & all the remastered has done is increase the sound. Remastering does NOTHING for the bass. You have to remix it.

    • @mvunit3

@@GeekFurious - There is an interview, I believe with Flemming Rasmussen talking about if he could have only engineered the whole album like "Master" and get Newstead's Bass mix re-done.
I'd link it here (if I can find it again) but if I did, my comment would go POOF :/.
Edit: Its not Flemming but Mixer "Steve Thompson" (he doesn't talk about "Master" btw), and the video is from Loudwire called; "Metallica Mixer Explains Missing Bass on 'And Justice for All" here at Yt.

Just coming from watching your Metallica "Trapped Under Ice" vid . . .
This track had another kind of impact on me (and as its last track on my FAVE Metallica album). In my teens, I started to have my own self-awareness (like most teens), but I started to realize what a nice person I was (and boring, nerdy etc. :p). I wasn't into partying, drugs/pot, drinking or hanging with "the wrong crowd", I was a good kid, but I hated school. I read on my own, was an artist since I was a pea, drawing Hot Rods and Sci-Fi/Fantasy Illustrations (thanks to Star Wars in 1977), and interested in Film, History and of course music . . . and girls (ha! but not much success with any).
But me and my Father were growing distant, mostly because I was failing at school (learned later I had "
Dyscalculia" and other learning disabilities that were not professionally diagnosed). It got much harder in my 20's living at home, and working part-time jobs. I never really fit-in, I wasn't the stereotypical "Latino", and was at odds with my parents, and it hardened my younger brother, where I am at odds with _him_ now. I won't get into more details but, my life was a reflection of this song, I learned later that Hetfield was at odds with his parents, mostly his Father (like me), so this track meant a great deal to me. I wasn't just feeling bad because my Father was taking out his frustrations on me, but later, that I was "allowed" to be angry at them as well. There was a lot of frustration and pain to deal with, and to eventually "let go".
It has been a struggle to let it go, maybe that is why I gravitate to heavy music to let-off some steam, of the everyday toil and past memories. I have had ups and downs in life like everyone, sometimes with that pain, I just don't know _where_ to put it. I have had successes as a professional artist, lived an "interesting" life that's been hard, happy, and challenging because of bad choices or circumstances out of my control that I just wonder what the hell is going on. But 2020 is getting back to a more mature path at 57.
In 2006 my Father died, I wasn't able to be there when it happened, only the day after. That was really hard, we had seen each other for a few years of holidays, but I never got to say all I wanted to say to him and make amends (pretty typical huh?). Then it was years with my Mother and then Brother who became hardened, whom I used to BEG our parents to let him go with me and friends to various shows/concerts on School nights, and how he was influenced by hearing my music blaring through my door :P (which strangely my parents didn't mind because they are where I got my influence on various musics from their time, and Rock of the 60's and 70's, especially from our Papa), and my sense of humor. We had seen quite a few shows, especially of Rush, Maiden and Primus. It seems that has come to an end sadly (Rush 40th Anniversary with my Ex was the last show I saw with him).
I don't listen to this song as much as I used to, as it takes me back to those moments as if I were _there_ again, but the musicianship is off the chart. Even Lars expanded his kit, and you can hear he progressed along with his bandmates. But those lyrics of Jamez hit home everytime, as I dwell on a past I can't change, but it gave me a release, an escape what I was living and trying to accept that some people can't change, and you have to forgive them or it will eat you alive. The next song after all that acceptance many years later was Dream Theater's "In the Name of the Father", and the dialogue from the film "Magnolia" within the song, that was another stab at the heart. Again, great musicianship and word-crafting that is stellar.
I got to see Metallica when they opened for Ozzy for "Master of Puppets" with Cliff on Bass. And 2 times for "...and Justice for All" (including the tour with Queensryche who finally did the entire "Operation Mindcrime" album). Those are some VERY special memories.
"Time has frozen still what's left to be
    Hear nothing
    Say nothing
Cannot face the fact I think for me
No guarantee, it's life as is
But damn you for not giving me my chance!"
Someone out there understood. I may not follow Metallica anymore (as I found TONS of bands that filled that void), except going back to those albums I love, but I could never deny they put Metal (and Thrash) on the map, and they healed a lot of wounds, and also made life bearable, and influenced Thrash to be more _Progressive_ (thank you "Disposable Heroes" and THIS album), and inspired Prog Metal to be what it became.
    - Thanks yet again NickNLex . . . "GO". \m/

What I love about this album is that is has such a powerful start and a powerful end. These types of albums are perfect because right after the last note, you almost have to play it again! This is my favorite track too, it's like they gave it all they got right at the end.
Definitely their best album (even though the mix is horrific - over and above the lack of bass it's really bad). I can't listen to anything after And Justice for All - they should have changed their name.

Maybe you can show her other sides of Metallica with songs like the Outlaw Torn, Mama Said, Unforgiven trilogy, Halo on Fire, Her Comes Revenge, Low Man's Lyric or Devils Dance. Man I get where you're coming from with the comparison to old Metallica and new, I was gutted when the black album dropped because the first 4 albums are untouchable to me and it wasn't thrash anymore, but still an epic album just took me time to adjust to it, as for Death Magnetic its got some decent tracks on there ,more like the old stuff, you have to listen to Hardwired, spit out the bone is a classic

Yeah I remember when I started listening to Metallica in high school the Black album had already dropped so I thought it was their sound. Little did I know about the first four which I discovered later on. When load came out I expected something in the vain of in justice or black but my spirits were lowered when I saw it wasn’t so. Thanks for watching man! - Nick
