This is incredible to see this! He was my grandmother ver good friend and I remembered going to his home when I was a kid. My grandmother and my dad spoke Patois at home all day! 👍🏾
Ruthven Pegus may have been the last surviving Patois speakers at the time of this vid. Trinbagonians may not be aware of the rich history of La Lune, Moruga, its French creole inhabitants many of whom had French, Spanish, African and Amerindian ancestry.. The cocoa panyols. Our foreparents came from France, Martinique, Venezuela, Africa, Cuba etc. Ruthven would have been the last of that generation who spoke and understood the language
I just came across this video...and I am trying to reconnect with my Trini past. I was adopted by my great aunt who's the last name is Pegus. She discussed Patois before claiming that it was a language not encouraged by her Mother. She was born in 1929 and died when I was at a young age. Wondering if there is a family connection? Is there a way for me to get in contact with him or family.
I knew a guy named Nigel Pegus when I was a young fellow and I actually met Ruthven (in 2001 I believe) through Nigel's attempts to reconnect with his roots. Ruthven is an incredible guy and very knowledgeable about the history of Trinidad, Moruga in particular. Just drive to Moruga and ask for him, when you meet him tell him you're a Pegus and you'd be embraced as family immediately and treated as such. This is how Nigel did it and I'm sure it will be similar for any Pegus. Cheers.
It's like yesterday after all these years.
Always replay it.❤❤❤❤❤
What a blessing that he is alive! God bless him and my beautiful country.
