They started using the Ford Police Hybrid (the Ford Fusion) after they needed a car to replace the Crown Vic since Ford doesn't make them anymore.
The NYPD uses Ford Police Interceptors which come in sedan and SUV variants

They do have tanks in fact they do have everything, the ESU which is there SWAT has more training in military tactics then normal SWAT teams do, some members of the ESU is also trained as firefighters, paramedics or I am pretty sure even emergency dispatching, to be part of the ESU (emergency Services Unit) you need to be trained in one other thing besides police.
The ESU does have armored vehicles that resemble tanks but I don’t think there armed or are you used much anymore.

With great respect to the NYPD and the FDNY, that seems to be an overkill response regardless of how bad the accident was. There must have been at least 50 police vehicles or more alone. Lot of tax dollars being spent for even a major MVA.

anything with red/blue flashers in front is a federal vehicle - in state of NY only red and white face front for emergency veh. blue and white or all blue in front is for volunteer fire

PANYNJ has blue on the front, but it’s a multi-state agency. MTA police and other MTA emergency vehicles are not multi state, but still have front facing blue lights. Nobody really cares so non federal vehicles can have front facing blues, I mean, who would enforce that law?

If a serious incident was to occur, they would focus on the incident at hand as well as looking for the suspect(s) and ensure the safety of the citizens. Another group that primarily focuses on roadway safety and block lanes would be the traffic department.
BECAUSE THAT WOULD CREATE A EVEN BIGGER PROBLEM THAN WHAT THEY HAD THERE ALREADY! THANKS!
