"What's cal-kool-us?"
Best comedic line in the movie
Lou Diamond Phillips got the best lines in this movie.
He actually says "Cal-Culos" and culo is butt in spanish
@@akayou47 no he for sure says calkoolus
@@kI-cq5xq trust me, im from Venezuela. And in this movie they sometimes say spanish words. I asume you already know that but I just wanted to remark that.

My high school math teacher was one of his students and he adopted Mr. Escalante’s teaching methods. We would have tutoring after school till 5, class an hour before school and Saturday school. He made it fun because he provided all his students with snacks, support, etc.
And to think in this year 2021 Garfield CANCELED the math program built by this man, Jaime Escalante, for being "too difficult." You have to wonder about the woke culture. We're going backwards...

This sounds too easy man. I sit here in front of my computer 4 + hours a day 6 days a week trying to get my math up to snuff.
I'm a math teacher and I used to show this movie to my kids in class. When I taught AP Calc, I showed this film right before the exam. The class loved it! Still one of my favorite "math" movies of all time! Olmos and Phillips are stellar.
My HS call teacher did the same in 1997
My teacher did this before our exam as well. As you can see, I’m still coming back to relive the beauty that is this movie.
You were fortunate and awsome. I took math way before this movie came out and there was no technology to show it, even if it had come out before my classes.
I saw this movie when I was 12 and decided I would take AP Calculus. 6 years later I got a 5 on the exam. Jaime Escalante is one of my heroes, and Olmos did a fantastic job portraying him

That caught me by surprise and I laughed!
Can't imagine how much the crew and the cast were laughing while doing that scene -- Phillips had great comic timing.
The fact that he was genuinely proud of himself for a minute 😂😂
Lou delivered this scene so well, such a fantastic actor.
My calculus teacher told me that if I learned and understood math and statistics I would always have a job. He was correct. If you bear down early you get rewarded 100 times over later on.

Calacool? Over here.
@@josepartida1711 Go fetch your shinebox.
Here in Japan, a combover is called a bar code. I'm not sure which is funnier, but you can at least use a bar code scanner for a punch line.
For the record, they call him “Kimo” cause it’s short for “Kimosabe” which they’re using as a fun way to say “know it all” since “sabe” means “he knows” in spanish
EDIT: to clarify, there’s a scene early on where (I think Angel) says, “heyyyy, Que no sabe todo?!” To say like “aye doesnt this guy know everything!” and Que no sabe sounds like kimosabe. Kimosabe is definitely also some indigenous guy… that’s what makes it funny. That’s not why they call him that lol
No shi.. !!!! Sherlock!!!!
So they know that he knows and knowing that using “kimo” short for “kimosabe” is knowing that he knows they call him a “know it all” for knowing it all to begin with Knowing that some of them might not know but knowing that they just go along with pretending to know, ya know?
👍🏼
...Idiot.
"Kimosabe" is actually "Quien no sabe" = clueless
This movie is really inspiring. I sucked at math. I wish I saw this movie when I was still in high school. I would have done better guaranteed

I saw this in high school. It didn't improve my dedication to math, but did make me appreciate the difference between a bad teacher and a great teacher. I am still grateful to some of the great teachers I had in high school.
Never too late to go back to school. I dropped out at 19 and came back to school at 28.
Just graduated from UCLA with honors
My favorite Jaime Escalante line is ‘you’re like a blind man in a dark room looking for a black cat that isn’t there’.
Math is the universal language, you just need to learn the language.
No money is you just need to get it.
@@moe408g8 actually money isn't. Money is the item or record that is generally accepted for debt repayment or the such. Fiat money is like a promissory note made by a country. While many may use money and have forms of it, in a strictly bartering community or society like we had in the past, money would not be known or accepted as a trade of goods for services or services for services isn't using money but bartering.
@@aaronmontgomery2055 Same thing teachers said.
@@aaronmontgomery2055 at this time and in this setting, money DOES track societal value. There is nothing you can say to deny this, but of course personal values can differ from universal. Calculus incorrectly applied, however, will yield no value. This value is most often shown through dollar bills, and was shown through gold hundreds of years ago, etc. etc.
I can solve math problems in a cave and yield no value to society. I can also use it to design a bridge. Context is everything. There were many famous, successful and virtuous individuals throughout history who knew no math, and many who understood logic without math. This is the lie that schools will tell you, as what you as an individual will need to learn will depend on your objectives in life.
When younger, like most teens, I was UTTERLY USELESS at math, even mental arithmetic. Didn't care for it.
Then, I saw this film.
2 years later, I was at University studying mathematics.

These movies didn't age well at all. High schoolers these days look like toddlers compared to the ones in this film. Lol
"we're seniors this is our year to slack off" 😂😂😂
Oh if only that were true
She's kinda right though. If you're already accepted into college or know what you're doing after high school, you can just cool it out that last semester. That's how it was for me. Best times for me
@@Dakid015 Unfortunately, that attitude has caused many college drop outs along the way as well. College is WAY more difficult than HS. Any kid can graduate HS.
@@shrapnel77 Maybe, but that's only for those who were really undisciplined to begin with. At least in my opinion. Enjoying at least your last semester in high school and slacking off a bit isnt necessarily going to mean you're going to struggle to graduate college, esp if you're naturally a good learner and not lazy in general. I'm pretty sure once college starts many students would know they have to start fresh in a new setting. They'll know the difference between that environment and high school right away. It's just up to them to have the right priorities when they get there. Most would imo, but some wouldn't. But I think it has little to do with their attitude slacking off in their last stretch of high school, which is supposed to be a celebratory period in one's teenage life.

Man... If I had the chance to go back in time to high school to study for just six months for the AP test... [VALUE YOUR TIME GUYS...]
Crazy how much a teacher that want you to succeed helps. I was a great student up until about 7th-8th grade. Started to really fall off in math and just barely had a D. I couldn’t figure out the work. My teacher asked me to come to class during lunch one day and gave me some extra help. I jumped from an D to an A+. Shame I couldn’t keep teacher like that through highschool. Might have come out with some extra credits when I started college.
I was a serious student in high school but re-enacted this scene on the first day of AP Calculus. My math teacher chuckled and gave a fist pump while the entire class was like WTF. It was hard to resist.
1:06 I was in my high school algebra class and my teacher ALWAYS showed us "Stand and Deliver" and I remember laughing hard at this scene and back then i didn't know who Lou Diamond Phillips was and didn't know he was in this movie lol
Calculus is cool when he asked, "What's calCOOLus?"
My dad took over for him when he left. Sadly enough 2 years later they changed the principal and the new principal didn’t support the program and dad couldn’t keep doing it
this teacher is so awesome
The movie did take some liberties though, it took him a lot of time and work with the students to get that kind of success. But with effort everything is possible.
I was literally just thinking of this scene this morning
All you need to learn calculus is, calculus=derivative=instantaneous rate, x vs t is the position of a falling ball, it’s derivative is velocity and the derivative of that is acceleration meters >> m/s >> m/s^2

I Said That One Time And The Teacher Smiled
0:44 to 0:46. I agree. Just taking it in college would have taken much less effort for 3 credit hours
J Rod yeah but the whole point of the movie is to stay ahead. Plus, that’s one less class they would avoid in the college tuition fees. I guess it’s all about circumstances
J Rod, In adittion to what eddi tex said, Having the AP Calc under their belts would make them more competitive applicants for the top universities.
If you think about the circumstances they're in, taking the test in high school would be a huge plus for them. They all come from a poorly performing school, thus taking the test and passing it while they're still in high school would greatly improve their chances of getting into good schools. Plus I imagine that they'll save a bit of money by having to take one less course.
Those high school AP classes would actually give you 6 credit hours. It was a 2 semester class.
J Rod in my university it 4 or 5 credit hours because we have a math lab
I just laughed when he pronounced calculus wrong 😂
That is the way you would pronounce it, if you read it with Spanish vowel sounds and stress rules. And probably closer to the original Latin word, than it has evolved today.
he didn't pronounce it wrong
he pronounced it PHONETICALLY, which is what you do in spain (ok, this was american) but whether Mexican, Chicano, or Spanish or Latin American you're pronouncing it Phonetically

Still love this movie
I just can't believe this actually happened. Kids now would never put in extra work like this to pass a class
Uhh, not true. I put in the work and got a 5 in the AP Calculus AB exam when I was in high school.
We got the Internet now foo.
I do believe it’s easier for the younger generation to do well in school because all the tools are there to succeed and they are tech savvy and get it done however they think too narrowly and can’t think outside the box of course not all but most. Most students now a days won’t read a book if it ain’t assigned to them. Data can back this up with numbers that show that less people are reading books because one main issue and that is attention span the average kid today is multitasking. I witnessed first hand with a younger coworker who is 19 and Iam 25 she does it well but is constantly distracted because of this. We need to explore and read about things that are not just focused on our college majors.

The teachers union drove him out of the industry and finally got rid of the "useless" advanced math program.
as opposed to a private school where the shittier students would not have been excepted or have been expelled? or a unionless school where the principal would have gotten rid of the math program himself?
If this movie was real, there isn't a force on earth, aside from the plot armor protected teacher, that could make those math courses into a reality
@@jhonjacson798 *accepted. Kids aren't expelled from any school for struggling with math.
@@cornfednebraskaneer yeah spelling mistake on my part, and the kids in that movie were dealing with ALOT more than poor academics. Besides, they can totally be expelled for being bad at math... and English... and French... and other subjects if the nature of the difficulty can either not be helped by the institution (which is what happened with one student that was at the school I worked for) or if the lack of grades was due to a consistent attitude problem. It's not the first resort but it is the last one.
of course that's just general incompetence, the types of kids that are in these schools are violent which any private school would expel them for on the spot.
