- The People's Joker is an LGBTQ+ coming-of-age comic book movie that stars writer, director and editor Vera Drew as the title character, Joker. She spends her youth numbing her true self with an inhalant called Smylex, but gets an opportunity to break free of hometown and family expectations after moving to Gotham City where she founds an illegal comedy theater.

Just watched this movie last night and it was wonderful. This movie is impressive beyond being a well done trans experience piece, but you can tell the sheer amount of effort and collaboration that went into making this beautiful fever dream. If you are weird, a nerd or trans, there is something for you here. Thanks for reviewing the movie Perri!
I like that this review gets the word out on films like this, which could easily get buried under by its legal issues. The more people know about it, the better chance it has to get released.
Such a wonderful review. Once people see it they will see it’s just a parody. If SNL can do it so can my dear friend Vera. I portrayed Dr. Crane in this film and, like others, donated our pay right back to this production we all believe in so much.

I'm not sure this is what I think of when I think of "parody". I feel like they're stretching the definition a little so their project fits....
Epic Movie got away with it egregiously, I see no reason why this wouldn't be okay. WB isn't losing money, nor is it disgracing the public perception of the character, at least no more than Leto's Joker did.

This movie was so much fun. It was such a breath of fresh air, instead of being another factory produced boring Marvel movie
I love when artists make crazy stuff. I hope it gets a release. Corporations get needlessly litigious. Stuff like this actually helps their brands. Great review Perri! And I love that you're keeping the Dewey Decimovie scale after his untimely passing. Long live the king!

Exactly. I wouldn't give this even 1 star. People need to stop pretending this is anything more than a gradeschool level attempt at making a movie. Just because the filmmaker is trans.
Um Perri really likes joker. Vera herself said in the collider interview she likes Joker too.
Who cares. Her opinion is different from yours. And scores are dumb for this specific reason.
The joker was a 6/10 at best.

I will never understand the approach this filmmaker took; corporations will want to protect their IP as much as possible and that can be seen all over the place. They should have just taken the same approach as that was taken with The Boys and everyone could still have a chance to see this movie. My opinion we are never going to see it and if she tries to take it to a film festival (or UA-cam) in the US it is going to be targeted by the lawyers that Discovery Warner has under retainer. My take on the Fair Use standards in the US Discovery Warner is the more likely winner of that challenge.
Or the same approach as the Gotham show, seeing as they also weren’t allowed to use Joker, but still managed to use Joker.
Actually I find the problem is more of the promotion. If she didn’t say anything about legal issues everything could’ve been fine. There have been plenty of fan films made without issue, not to mention since it’s a spinoff the copyright is even less of an issue. She just had to scream about non existent problems right towards the people looking for trouble.
Good news - everyone does have a chance to see this movie!
At least in the US. The tour started on April 1st, and the show at IFC on the 4th was crazy.
Tickets are available for showings in every state!

Stop pretending this is anything more than a gradeschool level attempt at making a movie, just because the filmmaker is trans. It makes Ed Wood look like Spielberg, If the trailer is any indication of what the rest of the film is like. And her having now worked in the industry for over 10 years now, she knew full well that what she was doing was illegal. From using an IP owned by a major studio, to using music she didn't license. But she was clearly counting on getting some kind of special dispensation, because she's trans. And now she's playing the "Big bad corporate America is stifling my creativity" card.
Go create your own characters. Or next time, pick characters that are in the public domain.

It's actually not illegal, warner brothers hasn't sued because they have no ground to. They couldn't even send a cease and desist, just a strongly worded letter. And after they sent the letter, Vera Drew worked with the head of WB Canada so their screening at TIFF could go forwards.
@@maxmalavenda yes, it's literally illegal. And the cease and desist letter was sent after the first Tiff screening. Which is why subsequent screegers were cancelled. As we're other film festival scheduled showings.

WB didn't kill the film. It was screened at IFC last week, line out the door.
You can get tickets for screenings in all 50 states for the rest of April and May.
