    I love it! The joke you pulled on us viewers was great. Rent your boats and sail a tri.
    I lived aboard, cruised, and chartered my very similar trimaran for several years and like a catamaran, they are great fun boats to take friends (and others) sailing. I am sorry you didn't get a good breeze that day, maybe another day when the wind is blowing 20 knots you can go again and show the boat at speed.
    Yes, minimal interior accommodations for the length of the boat but it has to be kept light to sail well. Flying a hull even in light air usually thrills guests and sailing into the waves in a good breeze scares them, after soaking them with all the water blasting back from the bows.
    The speed and ease of sailing is balanced by the rough motion going upwind. It is like flying a very small airplane in a storm. The boat is pitching rolling, jumping, and shaking so much you have to be holding on to something all the time. And that nice big bed? Hahahahaha! You don't lay down on that going upwind in wave because you will get thrown out of bed, across the cabin and slam into the far hull side before dropping down. The only somewhat safe place is in the aft cabin. Watching crew members trying to work the mast in those conditions is also worrisome, you wonder if they are going to make it back to the cockpit.
    So, the answer is...
    Never go upwind except in calm seas! Yeah, right. Don't we all hope for that?
    Sailing circles around every other sailboat is really fun. Cruising catamarans sail like slugs compared to a proper trimaran, and unimarana (those MONOhull boats) might as well be anchored when you blast past them doing 20 knots.
    Each boat has advantages and disadvantages, areas they shine and areas they stink, and more hulls equals more money. A simple sailboat cost formula is:
    Unimaran = $
    Catamaran = $$
    Trimaran = $$$
    After years on the Tri, I built a monohull...

      Thank you so much for your well reflected feedback! I’m happy you enjoyed the humour and also thank you for watching! I’m loving my monohull and she sails so good in all weather from 15 kts of wind and up. So guess there will be many miles to go with BE FREE before changing anything. All the best and cheers 🍻

    • @JagLite
      @JagLite 3 роки тому +6

      @@tim1398 They will make great videos as always! And they will show the speed the Tri can do, along with the difficulties a fast, light boat brings. Surfing waves downwind heading across an ocean at 20+ knots is quite exciting. And the sound! I'm sure they will record what it sounds like below decks at 20+ kts and the water is cavitating along the hull and it makes a loud rumbling that makes you think you are going twice as fast. During the daytime it is okay but trying to sleep with the noise making everyone stressed out. Many times someone would come on deck looking scared because of the sudden increase of noise below but once on deck they would see everything is fine, we just surfed down an unusually large wave and hit close to 30 kts and on deck it was quiet.
      They will learn to reef down at night for safety. We saw a 6 ft diameter log floating vertically out of the water more than a thousand miles offshore, the 6 ft waves were going up and down the log, it was stationary like it was a pile driven into the ocean bottom. We saw that during the daytime while sailing at 18 kts, if we had hit that we wouldn't sink (3 hull advantage) but it would have exploded a large area of the boat. I've seen other large semi-floating objects that would do extreme damage to any multihull at speed, and even a lightly built monohull would suffer severe damage. But speed is what really causes the worst damage so you learn to slow way down at night for safety.
      Slowing down at night is also nice because it allows you to sleep.
      SLV will surely tell everyone how rough going upwind in anything other than calm seas can be. It is shocking to many sailors how violent it can get if you have to make your way upwind. Like off a lee shore. Sure you can reef down and make it relatively comfortable by going slow enough that the boat just rides up and over the waves. The problem with that is that you make no headway. The boat just sails along going up and down the waves while staying in almost the same place. To make progress you have to give the boat more power which means now the boat is busting through the top of the swell then diving down and up again to launch off the crest of the next wave. And the speed change is something monohull sailors don't expect and why windvanes don't work well on light multihulls (upwind), the boat changes speed constantly and quickly which changes the apparent wind considerably going upwind. You have to hand steer and are constantly falling off and heading up depending on where the boat is on the swell, it slows down going up so the apparent wind requires you head up some to keep the wind speed up, then fall off when surfing down the back of the swell. Of course you are also steering to avoid the breaking wave crests to try to keep a bit dryer so you sail a constant slalom without adjusting sails or tacking.
      Great fun with a good crew that is experienced, rested, and eager!
      Not so much with a limited crew on a long passage.
      However, it is really only challenging when going upwind so most cruising multihulls are very comfortable 95% of the time.
      I'm sure SLV will love their new boat and will share the Good, Bad, and UGLY with all of us who sail along with them on YT.

    Rapido 60 is amazing boat, got to sail on one two years ago while visiting St. Croix. We sailed and lived aboard a 2005 Privilege 615 Catamaran for 12 years, great memories on that boat, but we recently sold it and bought a condo in Key Largo, Florida. Key Largo is the first Key in the Florida Keys including Key West, we didn't quit sailing we just downsized, our new boat is a 2020 Corsair 880 Sport Trimaran. Corsairs are known for their insane speeds and this one doesn't disappoint. On a recent sail from Key Largo to Key West, we covered the 92.7 miles in 5.7 hours and reached speeds of 14.2 to 17.6 knots and on several occasions reached 21.7 knots. Even at those speeds the Corsair is very stable and easy to sail.....

    HI - Love your vids. Great Job!
    Rapido trimarans - I would be curious how the noise level is on them while at anchor and while sailing. I'm sure the sound of the waves is a bit higher on this boat than on yours. Or is it about the same? I'm thinking in terms of very long passages...would the sound of the waves drive you to madness? I'm asking cause you can hear the waves during your walk-through of the boat...maybe it is just the camera's microphone being overly sensitive??

    If you're doing a crossing and it's night with a light rain, you're at the station in the elements? If they'd have a half enclosure around the pilot station, I'd be a lot happier. Who wants to single hand it in a downpour with zero protection from the elements?
    The lack of area to sun and hang out on the bow would really stink if you had kids. And the kids better be big or you could have them walk out at night at anchor and fall in out of the back bedroom.
    I love the boat. Just a lot you lose over a cat and the only thing you gain is it's faster. If you ask friends you only have 1 extra cabin for them. There has to be a better way. The half round with nets for the rear with 2 stations a lot of race tri's use and instead of netting you can use carbon so you get a huge salon and 2 pilot stations closer to either of the two outriggers and they're shielded somehow. Slightly wider frontal and mid area over the waterline so you can have 2 cabins in front and a larger salon with huge storage under it. I agree not to increase the width below the waterline. I'd also put manta ray shaped lifting on the center board, keel, and V daggerboards to get some lift out of them to keep it up as high as possible.
    You're giving up a lot for that extra speed. A cat you have 4 bedrooms with 2 full baths or 1 master in 1 sponson and 2 in the other. With a large 360 degree view salon. And shielded stations so you don't get soaked sailing in a storm. You still get soaked, but at least something protects your face.

    Gunboat 68 does 30
    Rapido 60 does 25

    The laws of physics cannot overcome the inherent instability of the trimaran. It is an inherently dangerous design. It was invented by Arthur Piver, who lost his life at sea in one of his trimarans. Some tri's are beautiful and superbly engineered. If you know you can always go to sea in one of those, with several very experienced crew, then sure, have fun. But for most of us that isn't at all practical. Far from land, short-handed, the wind comes up unexpectedly and you are over-canvassed with just two or three of you available to reef quickly. That is the reality of sailing offshore for long distances. Sea conditions worsen, the gusts get stronger and bingo, wind and sea apply their forces to the enormous surface on the underside of your boat and you are capsized. You are now screwed. My two cents is that you're putting yourselves at an unreasonable risk.

      Thank you for watching and for your comment. I actually agree with you in lots of your statments, and if you watched the entire episode this was a bit humoristic video. I realize lots of people missunderstands humour and even only read headliners. It was kind of a answer to all the viewers that was saying my solo sailor friend snd I should buy a boat together. The answer is later out in this very episode. Anyway wish you all the best🍻

    Who gets which cabin or is there a tete a tete. That is the question. Size matters and a cat has it. Thumbs down on the Rapido. Would not like having to go topside to get to the other cabin. La Vagabond is buying one to build in Viet Nam and they will put kids in aft cabin which means they can not be watched. Big mistake.
