- In this one we screen some INCREDIBLE gemstones! We have some bags of mine rough containing garnets and sapphires to go through and get some real beauties! On top of that, we collected gravel from a site in Montana that contained absolutely phenomenal garnets! After doing our screening I pick one out to facet. I apologize for the odd sound quality in this one; my mic was really acting up, and my levels were kind of all over the place, but it has since been resolved and will not happen again. I hope you all enjoy this one, and I'll have another one out very soon!

Really do enjoy your videos! I’ve learned alot from watching. I also watch the other people you recommend! Awesome group of people! Thank you 😊
May I buy an unsorted bag of the same kind of gravel for practice??
You should make a container with plexiglass on the bottom to put the washed stones in and have a light underneath it. I would think it would make the garnets pop.
My heart gave a little jump when you showed that faceted garnet - gorgeous!
I think it is absolutely beautiful.
Il need this kind of sand ! 🧐🤩
That blue green sapphire at the end. If you can cut it from the right direction you can have a color zoned blue and green showing.
SORRY THE MUSIC IS TO LAUD, I CAN'T UNDERSTAND
Very nice! That certainly was fun. I want more! 👍
Beautiful garnets! I’ve never seen a gem faceted before, thanks for showing that!
Nice gems in this one. How fun is that -- hunting for tiny treasures! Thanks for sharing!
How exciting finding the big garnets in the stuff that you dug yourself! I would enjoy seeing what you find in the other 2 bags as well.
Love finding garnets, my birthstone.
Fab faceting! You make it look easy and I know it can’t be. Nice video....looking through gravels is addictive.
Love it!
Good fun there
Wow! That short faceting session was fascinating! I was stunned at how it came out. Yes, please do more of that sorting and finding if you have more rough. It was helpful to have you convert from grams to carats. Your enthusiasm was catching -- so exciting.
Going to Ruby Reservoir today! Thanks for sharing how to go through the gravel!
May I suggest, use translucent glass as a container for the small stones, which are then installed under the glass
Very cool! And yes please a video on making a Saruca would be amazing!
Those big garnets are just nuts! I wonder why they all gathered in that particular area. It's so relaxing to sit and go through gravel, one piece at a time - rockhounding indoors!
Nice gems.
* Went on a Sapphire Dig over by Helena and Gates of the Mountain... Got the worst sunburn of my life. Learned to rock the screen (from the small window in my apartment Air Shaft.) There were Garnets & Sapphires in the same area.. This was about 1967. Still have the tiny pill bottle with my finds in it.. Would go thru the pain again to Dig them.. However I would remember Sun Screen & Not Sit in the Lake getting Reflection Burns.. LOL
I saw Katydid swirling a fine screen green bowl, so at Goodwill I got 3 cooking strainers like you’re using! Feeling smug now! Nice finds!
Loved it! Have you watched Dan Hurd sifting garnets directly from a river. Watching anyone wash garnets, sapphires, gold out is my kinda fun! This old lady is also very envious!
Awesome video and finds! What may make it easier to look for your gemstones is get a piece of plexiglass and put a light under it so they glow!
Give the sapphires a heat treatment and you will be suprised at all the colors you have. Great job. You went, you dug, you sifted, you found. What could be better? Be safe and stay healthy 😷⚒
I saw a young girl in Australia that use a box with a clear botton. She hold it up to the sun and you can the sapphires
I would like to see you work on the fire agates that Grace sent you. Does the store that you bought the garnets and sapphires from have a website that you can buy some of that gravel. That looks like a lot of fun. Great video. I also see that you hit four thousand subscribers. Way to go!
I definitely will be working up some of those fire agates in an upcoming video! I have some really nice ones that I'm excited to window. As for ordering gem rough, i do not think red rocks ships the garnet bags; they might but i do know that they are closed for the season so i am not sure if they currently ship. Gem mountain in phillipsburg on the other hand does ship their sapphire bags! And thanks so much!😊
Near where I once worked there is a brook where you can pick quarter sized garnets out of the bed. I live in a state that has a lot of pegmatite - lots of interesting minerals - tourmaline etc. I found a nice crystal once, not sure if it is tourmaline, aquamarine or emerald - it has a nice green color.
That is pretty neat Theo, I would love to find some sapphires. There are a few places around me to get garnet but I have never gone.
I'm a rock collector and faceter too. At first I was thinking most of the garnets too small. Next thing you're dopping up the larger one and cutting it which I didn't expect. Turned out well. All the garnet I get here is too dark but who says we shouldn't say what the hell and just go for it anyways sometimes.
Wonderful finds, i envie you 😉 😜, i would love to do that. Good luck
Hey Theo doing that over a light box would be so much easier! I I used to sift tourmaline from San Diego over a light box!! So much easier and you’re much less likely to miss any!!!
* Theo, you can drill those tiny pieces and crafters will joyfully use them to run wire through to make a Tree of Life.. They will love stringing them on Crochet thread & crocheting Bracelets.. Don't toss them because they are tiny.. Sell them as Chips or drilled Chips..
I enjoyed watching you pick out the sapphires and garnets. Kinda like a miniature Easter egg hunt. Makes me want to order a bag of mine run and go through it myself. Any suggestions as to where I should order the mine run from. Any help appreciated.
Theo amazing haul where did you buy them . Unless you found them and it remain forever yours.
That's my long term goal find a gem Stone and facet it...im just at the cutting rock and pendant stage 😅... but I don't care if it takes me 10 years im in...😃
The faceting machine looks nice, also simple. Is it an older one? The new ones they have are more confusing. Good job on the facet.
Theo, is there a site to send a picture for identification purposes? I found what I thought was an agate but is actually a combinations of blues, greens, grey and brown in blocky stripes.... and is very opaque. Love your videos and your talent for working with what you find is amazing!
if you are techy at all, take the camera from an old laptop and wire it up to a 5+ foot usb cable, and glue it to one of those bendable table clip phone stands, then you can position the camera in any position and record directly onto your computer plus then you are also hands-free with the camera and it stays steady and you can see on your screen exactly what you are recording. my channel has examples of how it looks using it in my glass cuting videos. they are great for top view recording
I would use a head lamp it's so much easier. A rechargeable one would be best. Are those blue and green ones in the very first pan have saphires in that pay dirt?
Have you put a UV lamp to the garnet I found some garnets in Montana then found out they were Ruby after they glow bright pink.
I didn't realize how many green sapphires were in the world
garnet is my birth stone
What do you do with the rest of the stones?
Wow you made that look easy! Did you teach yourself?
I did! It was like trying to read japanese at first but once you understand how the machine works, it's pretty easy to get the hang of!😊
Never found any garnets, sapphires, or other gems from mines.
Hello there! In the video you mentioned Red Rock where you got the bags, but the self collected gravel, was that from the same site or a different one? My wife and I have garnet fever since we got some rhodolite garnet in Franklin NC.
Have you ever tumbled any of the larger lower quality stones? Was just curious
Where did you buy your bag and boot from? ty
What mine did you purchase the sapphire gravel from?
So what's the make and model of your faceting machine? I keep meaning to ask, but since you actually got to working with it now, I'm going to be nosy about your tools.
I like sapphires I cut them myself maybe send me a link to your store

Theo,
Saw this video. Been there done that, but when my bag of gravel arrived ($150), after washing I had basically (1) tiny garnet, and a few fragments of sapphires. Only one of them was faceting size/quality; maybe 1.5ctwt. I'm a facetor so I know what I'm looking at. This bag of crap came from "Gem Mountain" which is also in the Phillipsburg mining area. So which miner did you buy your bag of gravel from? I found a Black Pine Mine operation which makes no mention of Corundum, or Garnet material. They are mostly a Silver mining operation. But surely they have tailings too! Yet, if they had some sapphires, they'd be marketing them. Be stupid not to. For the colors and sizes of corundum you found in that bag, it's a far cry from what I got from the crappy Gem Mountain rip off I got! I complained, but heard nothing back from them!
And BTW, if you intend to cut Corundum this requires very sharp, new laps and considerable time to cut and polish. I've been doing this for almost as many combined ages of you and your pretty sidekick, Alexia combined! You don't want to even try polishing sapphire without SHARP laps! It will take you forever! Also, Corundum is fraught with some common frustrations.
They have hard and soft zones, depending on their exposure to earth's heat at the moment they formed. You'll be cutting along and say, oh, that's not too bad... And then all of a sudden you'll encounter the harder facets, and sparks will fly! Literally! Use 5-min. Epoxy glue, and allow to cure overnight, or in an old oven at 120-deg. for 10-min. Allow to cool down to body temp before removing. Use plenty of water drip, or heat will build up and the stone will go flying off the dop. A dull lap won't even budge the facet a micron! So you'll need to muster a lot of patience.
The second thing you'll encounter is the "Orange-Peel" effect. The surface looks just like that of an orange peel. And removing it is very difficult. Most cutters default to a previous, coarser lap, (1200 or 3k) to break through the peel. But there are ways and means of overcoming this problem. I'm not able to be specific on this platform, as it would be self-advertising.
I'm impressed with the ingenuity and variety of projects you have been involved in. Eventually, your skill sets will be honed and you'll become noted for specific things which you'll do very well. Keep it up!
I have been looking for the place to sign up for the giveaway. I cannot find it. ~Dan
If you click on my channel icon, it should take you to my page; on the top of the page it should show multiple tabs, for example: videos, playlists, etc. Select the "community" tab and in one of my most recent posts, i ask for questions for the Q&A and that is the one to comment on!😊 it unfortunately is not a shareable page, i tried to share it to the facebook group but it would not let me for some reason. I have also been told that it does not always show up on computers so you may need to use a phone or tablet. I dont know why they made the community tab so hard to find but it really is sometimes🤷
Are the blue stones in the stuff you collected sapphires?
The blue ones are sapphires but those came from mine rough that we purchased; we did not collect that gravel ourselves
@@TheoKellison one is at 5.23 from the stuff you collected (its looks blue but could be just the camera) bottom left, inch up?
Do you ever facet gems for other folks? I got a ton of sunstones I'd love to see cut into gem stones. I'd be willing to pay you in cash or gem stones! Or if you know anyone else that does that kind of thing I'd love to know. I wish I had the tools and skills to do it myself, but I'm not there yet.
one what?
Don't you just hate it when they slap the lens like that? It feels like they're slapping us.
Background music drowned out your comments.
Closed captions works on videos with voice that is hard to hear.
Loved what you were showing us, but the music was overpowering and drowning you out. Just let us focus on you 😃
Yeah im still not sure what the heck was going on with my mic in this one; it was SUUUPER muted. It will probably hurt my channel analytics, but im considering taking the video down, removing the music, and reposting it. Not sure why the footage came out so much quieter than normal but it is certainly frustrating🤷
I didnt mind the quieter parts, its just that all the music was annoying and overpowering. Like I said, we just want to hear you. I think music is great as an intro, and a closing, but during the actual video not so much. As a viewer, I like to learn stuff from you, but it's hard with music playing while you are speaking. Hope this critique is helpful.
I want in on the subscriber give away!
@@danielcole9620 no worries!😊 apparently a lot of people have not been able to find the post and i want more than 30 people to have a shot at the giveaway, so I am changing the giveaway. when i make my Q&A video(which will be sometime in the next week), just make sure to comment on that video to enter the giveaway!😊right now the plan is to have the Q&A come out on Saturday
With all due respect the background music is not very dynamic and interferes with what you are saying. I would much rather listen to your dialog than music. You are much more interesting and I am all ears. Just sayin!
