    I’ve watched at least 6 different intro to tumbling videos, and honestly yours is the best so far. You show everything and explain everything, and you’ve provided more info about the mineral side of things than anyone else I’ve watched. Thanks!

    a tip if you like,take the plastic lid(s) off of butter tubs,cottage cheese tubs/etc,cut out a circle that is slightly smaller than the metal lid and poke a hole in the center.put the plastic disc on the top of the lid,then the washer and nut will lock it down.this is an easy way to make a wear strip to help save the lid from getting a groove cut into it.i have just made 5 or 6 and it took about 10 minutes.i used my drywall circle cutter but i think cutting them with scissors is just as easy.

    Wow, those turned out great! I just love that process of taking a rough stone and making it smooth. My problem would be in waiting for several weeks for the finished piece! I'd want to have several tumblers going at once, I think, with rocks in different stages, so each week or so I'd have something finished. Anyway, this was quite enjoyable. Thanks for showing the before layout and the after layout, that was very helpful, too.

    Excellent tutorial my friend!. That is as a complete tumbler tutorial as I have ever seen. I have seen a few that used a vibratory after steps one or two and they did not take as long to achieve a bright finish as using the tumbler. Good job Theo. Havagudun and stay safe.

    Really enjoyed watching and all the tips. I will admit I get confused by so many different videos and so many different ideas on the best results. I did shaved bar soap but only two hours when the tumbler started acting up on me. So I really don't know if it helped much at all. I will be giving dawn soap a try on my next run. Thanks for sharing !

    Great video! I've just started my second batch of tumbled rocks including my first Montana moss agate and a collection of jasper from flathead lake!
    As someone new to collecting and tumbling rocks, I have a very hard time identifying what I may be working with, and have as such lost some good pieces to tumbling. Do you have any suggestions for determining hardness when you can't correctly identify the rock?
    Since many of my river and lake rocks are already rounded from natural tumbling, how should I adjust the tumbling schedule?

    Great video. I'm new at this. Someone said that after each cycle, you should drain the tumbler, wash off the rocks and then add water and 1 1/2 teaspoons of Borax and tumble for about 10 minutes to clean everything. What's your feeling on that? Thanks.

    I'm a newbie to tumbling so I have lots of questions as I learn. I was wondering why some people only use about a half cup of water in the tumbler but i see some use much more? And same thing with the media, some use it and some don't. I dont want to waste my time doing it wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also I love your videos.

    The 5th step secret step was that just washing up liquid soap and also if it is can you use that secret step on all tumbling rocks or just quartz based ones

    I got some quartz dalmatian jasper and a few other agates in my first run of coarse grit. They were fairly smooth already I think I should have started maybe on stage 2 or possibly 3. I'm talking river pebble smooth to start. I'm mainly looking for a polish. I dont see you guys using foam blocks mixed in. Do they not help

    So on a typical four step tumbler add the pellets AFTER the first two stages are done?

    • @TheoKellison
      @TheoKellison  4 роки тому +1

      I do not know why I didn't get a notification for your comment but I am so sorry that I did not see it sooner! Yes, you add the pellets when you move from fine grit to pre polish, and then every step after!

  • @codycast
    @codycast 4 роки тому +1

    Also can you explain what you think the last step (soap) actually does? I’ve tried to tumble but they come out very dull. Mine are smooth like yours but not shiny

    • @TheoKellison
      @TheoKellison  4 роки тому +6

      It is often referred to as a burnishing step. After the stones come out of step 4 they are technically polished, but the will still have a microscopic texture. This texture holds onto the polish powder and dilutes the overall shine because it is basically still dirty. The fifth step is to allow the soap the truly penetrate the stone and clean all compound off of any surface of the stone. So in short, the soap step is really the Rock tumbling equivalent of putting your Stones into a dishwasher to make them sparkly clean. Hope this helps! 😊

  • @Vincent-wo8fd

    • @TheoKellison
      @TheoKellison  2 роки тому +1

      Of course!😄 the extremely super secret fifth step is 48 hours tumbling in soap😄 it REAAALLY helps bring up their shine😄

    My son is looking to get into the hobby, and I was wondering what advice you can give him starting out. Also, he is looking at getting the Lortone 33B. Would you recommend this tumbler? Any other tumblers you would recommend? He would also like to know what companies, websites or stores you would recommend for sourcing rough stones to tumble? We are in Northeast Kansas, and I am unsure if there are any type of rocks in our area that are worth hunting for tumbling.

    • @TheoKellison
      @TheoKellison  4 роки тому +7

      I am SO sorry for not seeing your comment sooner! I was not notified for some reason. The lortone 33b is a fantastic model! You are pretty much sureto get a great quality machine with any lortone tumbler, but the 33b is a wonderful model to start with! As for sourcing tumbling rough, I would absolutely recommend the Rock shed in South Dakota! They have an outstanding selection, ship extremely fast, and have very good prices! I am unfamiliar with Kansas geology but I would be more than happy to see what I can sleuth up for you! 😊

  • @r.awilliams9815
    @r.awilliams9815 4 роки тому +1

    I'm about to start tumbling, and I do have one question...people say run loads of similar hardness. OK, that makes sense...but how much tolerance is there in 'similar?' For instance, apartite is 5.0, and lapis lazuli is 5.5-6.0. Can they be run together, or is that too much difference?

    • @TheoKellison
      @TheoKellison  4 роки тому +4

      Great question! From my experience, I've found that it depends on what hardness range you are running. If you're running harder Stones like quartz, which is generally around 7, you will a higher tolerance with mixing, so you can easily get away with mixing hardnesses of 6-8. Whereas if the batch is softer, for example around 5 or lower, you will have less wiggle room as far as how much the hard Stones will affect the softer Stones and only have about a range of 1 on the hardness scale, so between 5 and 6. So theoretically, there should be no problem with running Lapis in a batch of apatite, but I would not put anything harder than the Lapis in the batch. I hope that makes sense and was any help!
