On the Hunt for Carnelian Agates in Washington

- Today me and Aidan decided to break out of solitary confinement and go to our old Carnelian Agate stomping grounds. Petrified wood and Jasper included! Watch the video and get a vital tip on finding these beauties. PLEASE NOTE; because it was brought to my attention via the comment section (which must have been deleted by the person making the comment) that the area we are collecting on is NOT owned by Weyerhaeuser, but a different owner that does allow agate hunting and other uses in accordance with the posted signs. I checked. They said the only time a person is not allowed on their timberland is if there’s been a recent fire.
I've been struggling with my carnelian search. Looking for that deeper red look. When you started with those lighter shades, I realized I have found some, just lighter. Thanks! ok, your wing man has won me over, I'm subscribing today. Rock on. boys!
It's an honest thing people often miss. Carnelian should be thought of as toasted quartz. Sitting in the sun for eons is why it's the color it is. The sun colored it. Once it was just a regular clear or opaque quartz. You can artificially color quartz with heat such as in a kiln and higher and higher temperature with duration can produce specific colors such as 600 degrees Fahrenheit would produce a yellow quartz "citrine" and at 800 degrees you'd get amethyst or purple

@@mrfxm55that is great info thank you
now that’s a Dad spending quality bonding time with his son.........warms my heart😍
Isn't that great? Teamwork, exercise, education, etc.
The most thing I like about this is the father, son having the best day with each other and getting rewarded for there companionship . You two deserve everything you got on this trip
Old disabled house bound dusty rusty rockhound here: I agree!
It is so nice to see a father and son out together doing rock hounding. Heartwarming, keep it up!
Fantastic specimens and a great day out. Finding peace and treasure is a very addicting experience. Great work.
Your son is so cute. And smart and good at finding great agates. He is going to show you up if he hasn’t already. What a great bonding time for you too.🥰👍🏻. This is from a grandmother’s perspective. What a wonderful young man you have.
This is my first time watching you all, but I am thrilled that you are taking your son along and teaching him how to find beautiful stones! What our country needs more than anything these days is strong fathers! So I'm delighted to see this. I've never seen carnelian that red before! Gorgeous! Too bad I don't live anywhere near you guys, picking carnelian up off a roadway? Even an old lady like me could do that! That creek was lovely! And yes, I subscribed! Hugs from Virginia!
Thanks, this is a great opportunity for families to go and explore, learn about nature and their environment, Good Job Pops.... Happy Dad's day to you all 😀
The SE corner of Lewis county is opposite direction of "Logan hill" - it's Pe Ell. damn I would love to locate this spot and take a nice walk. You've got the perfect partner for rock hounding, what a guy, and great dad for teaching him something he'll keep with him always
Cool kid😎 Is awesome you take him with you. You guys found a lot of nice stones. I watch a lot of RockHounds videos, am learning a lot. Unfortunately I've lived in places where variety is low. I've gotten older so get to live vicariously thru you guys. I love the hunt🙂
The pieces you found are really nice! I can’t believe there are so many out there. Thank you for doing the video and sharing.
Amazing finds! I used to take my kid rockhounding too. Miss those days when she was young and cared about rocks! Great video, thanks!
Man Adian you got the eye for all the good stuff. Love all your finds! Great job!
I'm new to rockhounding and found your channel from Marlaina. It's so helpful the way you explain why you are hunting in the areas you do, and also how you show the way the rock is laying in the ground before you dig it up. Thanks for the video and tips!
Thanks for the compliment!
Nice video. Been researching wa agates for months now and enjoyed this video. I've been digging quartz and gold prospecting for years, but never agates. This will be my sons first year rock hounding, I'm hopeful he will enjoy it as much as yours. You got my sub with this one.
25:40 is a great find! Especially when 'rind' recognition was needed. Expert eyes you've got there...Good job teaching
Wow what a cool place! You guys found some nice ones. Thanks for sharing!
Aidan, what a beautifully red carnelian agate you found! If I'm spelling your name correctly Aidan, this is the name of the Celtic sun god and it means " fiery "! Fruitful rock hounding trip. It's nice to see a father and son enjoy a shared interest. I enjoyed going along with you both. ☺️
A reward of nature to the small family of father and son with beautiful colored stones; congratulations. Thanks for sharing this auspicious
My first time watching and I subscribed! Very cool video! Thanks so much for sharing this!😊😊😊😊😊😊
You guys are so blessed to live there! I would love doing that!!!
Loved watching this! My father and I used to hound the same area back in the 1990s!
Wow I can't wait to see all the good finds u found. I'm in Snohomish County and I have a really hard time finding Carnelian mostly just Jasper and agate and quartz on the Snohomish River

That would be an awesome road to hunt after a hard northwest rain hit (all the time lol) This is a great video, and informative too. Just subbed to your channel, You guys make a great team!
I found my first carneliean a couple weeks ago, I live in northwest Oregon, and I was so stoked, it took me over 7 hours of searching a local creek, obviously not a lot of agates in my area, but I discovered there are some! I know lower in the willamette valley there are 20x more than up here, but im happy I found a nice one! We have weyerhaeuser timberland all over down here too! They have a lot of trees.
I grew up as a river rat on the puyallup/carbon. Then later the Stillaguamish. This is almost exactly the same relationship I had with my mother. Despite the resentment I still harbor towards her, the rock hunting, plant identification, berry picking, river walking, trail blazing, etc. has helped me to see things differently, more realistically, and I'm more appreciative of that every day. Aiden is a smart cookie and I hope he knows that. Take care🙂
Thank you. Yes he is smart, and has surpassed my knowledge about minerals.
Make peace with your mom. Time is flying.... faster than you think! Nothing is more important than family.
Awesome finds I’m in Spokane area love rock hounding thank you for sharing , we have found a old copper mine tailings pile been finding azurite and malachite, always a awesome day rock hounding ❤️
I live in Troy Montana just up by Bonners Ferry, I had no idea Spokane was a good place to rock hound. Have you been to the St Mary’s star sapphire mine?
What's really cool is that you and your son are together doing something fun, wholesome, educational and outdoors. My folks used to take me on these kind of trips. I'll never forget the thrill of finding an awesome rock.
I can totally relate. When I was a kid I was totally fascinated by rocks and I remember my grandparents would buy small rock specimens that I liked whenever we where in a rock shop or souvenir store somewhere.
If I were you I would remove this video. You still need a pass for nonmotorized access to weyerhauser lands, and it is strictly forbidden to rockhound on weyerhauser lands. If anyone from that company seen your video, they could prosecute. Be careful.
This is not Weyerhaeuser property.
@@vugmeister918 If it were W's property, do they own the mineral rights? I can see why they wouldn't want you taking actual trees, but does petrified wood count? LOL I understand trespassing laws and such, was just wondering.
I liked your video because you zoom in slowly giving the viewer the chance to try to see which of the pieces it is you have your eye on. 👍🏼
I take the whole family with me to the local beach for Hunts . Last year went up to the rivers in the white mountains NH and this year where taking the kid she would love it . Glad your out there having fun be safe enjoy
Wow! Some of those carnelians are so red and gemmy that they are calling out to be turned into displays or jewelry. Going to have to pay that county a visit.
Amazing that this stuff is just lying around... incredible!
Think of how many people drove, walked, biked on this road and missed it!
I live in west Perth, Australia; don't have a car (don't really need one here, the bus service goes everywhere) so I spend lots of time walking around. The amount of stuff I've found wld blow your mind - gold rings, jewellery, purses, certain powders in cellophane bags...ahem ahem, I even found an Iridium Satellite Phone in it's case once (handed that in to the cops); it's just amazing the stuff that's just lying around waiting to be found - like a life long Easter egg hunt!
I'm so jealous, the depth of red in those two stones is mesmerising. I could sit and look at them all day. Well done matey. Just a side note. I remember this video from a while back. I remember liking and subscribing, when I came to comment, I noticed they both had gone. Maybe this is an administrative or algorithm problem. Anyway I enjoy watching your uploads, thanks.
Great finds guys. Thanks for sharing
Okay - you inspired me. I found my first carnelians the day after watching this! Two tiny ones from Richmond Beach, WA, after a rainstorm. So…earrings?!🤷♀️
I subscribed today and I'm happy to see all the beautiful carnelian and agates ... very awesome!
I found jasper wood in Colorado and its amazing, some common opal too. Beautiful mineral replacement in different areas.
Thank you for subscribing!
@@vugmeister918 you are welcome, I also shared a video with my niece. She new to Rockhounding
Truly enjoyed this excursion.

Iif you are ever around Mount Rainier I'd love to show you some of my spots around here where I pluck carnelians out of the water everyday
Right on. I'm heading to what I'm pretty sure is the same spot you were at. I live in olympia, WA and have been hunting that creek for years. It never disappoints.
I live in Tumwater. Did you ever find a spot? I’m new to agate spotting.
Absolutely gorgeous finds, I gotta get my boys out doing this!
Wow, I would love to get out there, so nice! It's so wonderful to see you two out doing that together, you have a beautiful relationship ❤
So cool to see kids interested in rocks and minerals
You guys are having just WAAAY too much fun! Willi B. in Canada
Wow ! That petrified wood is incredible!
A good spot you both have. Wow, a cool treasure trove.
Love it that your're rock hunting with your son. Makes me wish I'd done that with my daughter when she was younger. Now she's 30 and I'm 71.....:-(
I wouldn’t be to disheartened, he has an older brother that had 0 interest in rocks when I took both of them at an earlier age.
I think this is awesome! I really need to do this with my Grandson...he would have a blast!
You guys had a great haul! Wish I were there...................
nice finds guys. you should do a haul recap at the end of the video so we can se everything together
And do you show your gems polished up somewhere?
Wow, you are great spotters!
Precious moments!😊
Hi we are here looking for your red mounds, we are having a tough time finding them. 😪 beautiful area though... love this town! From washougal! ❤
Take the little red and orange too...you can make them for ring or earring...
Man Aiden, getting into the “thick“of it really paid off with that huge red one!!
Awesome job guys!
Thanks for keeping the rockhounding videos coming! I cant wait to get out again. Any tips or hints on where to find good geologic maps? The ones on the dnr site are detailed but when you zoom in they are blurry and unreadable. Beautiful finds!
I know the public dnr website maps aren’t great but also try USGS.
I live in wa. State and if you want a better place to go i got it for you try green mounting you'll find any team from Jasper agate 2 obsidian petrified wood fossils
Oh ya i live in vancouver wa.and its by there look up on map
@@kennyolson4596 Which green mountain? We have one in Snohomish and one in Skagit but I am sure there are many.
AMi Niño,mas chico le gusta MUCHO la collection de PIEDRAS 😍 .Hermoso video.
Very nice finds!!!!!
Incredible. Totally my fantasy.
You have found some really pretty stuff
Omg great finds👏🔥💯👍
I was wondering if you know whether or not there are any rocks worth hunting for in the Blue Mountains near Pomeroy, WA?
Well if I ever get to go carnelian hunting I want Aiden with me! Great job.
That red red carnelian is superb!
While carrying your bucket you could put in a spray bottle with water or even spit on the rocks to see the nice colors.
What a fun day rock hounding!
Awesome! Where are you guys! Not specifically but like what river? ❤
I've found some amazing pieces out here in lewis..great place to hound.
Should walk up and down the rivers in Onalaska napivin and winlock. You probably won't go back to the timber line lol..even adna wa has some amazing pieces to.
Old disabled house bound dusty rusty rockhound here: I lived in Northwest Washington State for 30 years. Seeing yall rockhunt there made me so homesick!
Y'all found some colorful stuff!
some nice finds well done 😊
Great video first foremost. Awesome finds. But, did anyone notice the crawdad @20:00? 3” to the left of the agate. Lol
Is the whitish layer on the carnelian @20:00 opalized? Or is it just a different shade? I found a reddish brown one, that looked as if parts of it had turned to an opal layer. Or at least a whitish opalescence, without the glittery/gold look. Do they do that? I have found several really nice carnelian ones in my drive. Not quite as deep beautiful red as yours tho. And thousands of beautiful agates and pet wood. My husband and grandson give me grief about removing the driveway. The rocks and clay are from southern MS'sippi gravel and clay pits.
What an awesome day out with your son 💪👍🔔.
Very nice!
You could both do with small picks to save the fingers on hard surfaces, and a spray bottle often comes in handy. I often carry my few tools etc in a leather tool bag belt. just some ideas to help.
We actually have some old screwdrivers in our backpacks we totally forgot about. I do like any tips to make our expeditions easier, thank you!
@@vugmeister918 I don't know what kind of snakes you have in WA, but I sort of cringed watching you reach under the overhangs in the creek. You can buy grabbers with extensions pretty cheaply. (As an old lady, I find they come in handy.) And I like the suggestion of having a tool belt. Besides screwdrivers and grabbers, you could also have some of the smaller gardening trowels and forks as well, and those rockhounding picks.
My favorite part is the hunt.
K have some shorts of the ones i found the I- 80 corridor near battle moutain.
Beautiful rocks,😎
Those are just some beautiful pieces! I’ve only found carnelian at Damon Point but would love to go looking inland.
Amazing finds
What a nice son! And a good spotter!
I just wonder who cried to make that tear drop.
And how did you find out it was a tear?
good video, my friend!
It’s so much fun to teach children
😆 our driveway! Our bedrock is basalt, our ground is clay, high in aluminum.
I am so jealous, great carnelian agates.
Nice finds! Ouch you guys need to carry a small old screwdriver or use a stick to save your fingers from some of those embedded ones. I don't like being locked out of the parks and recreation areas, but then I think of those people who won't/don't keep distance no matter the location.
Don’t believe everything you hear: www.shtfplan.com/headline-news/another-covid-19-whistleblower-a-montana-dr-says-government-is-drastically-overstating-deaths_04132020
I found tons of carnelian agates west of Goldendale. Some the size of footballs but the centers of these would turn yellow. The smaller ones were red all the way through.
Good to know!
Good to know! What formation if I may ask?
rally enjoyed your ride!
hello there, I am a rock collector I have been collecting rocks since I was a child I have tons and tons of different kinds of Aegates, I really would like to know How to identify them, if you have any suggestions, On a place that I might be able to go that would be able to help identify Agates I'd really appreciate the help
So what do you do with the stones after you find them? Do you polish them? What are they so nice? and why do you take the small ones, are they to make jewelry? thanks, I am a beginner as you probably guessed....can you explain some of that info in your future videos? Love that your with your son, he is an expert!
For now I just look at the smaller ones in a jar. The larger ones get sliced in half and faces polished. But if a person wanted, could easily throw the smaller ones in a rock tumbler and use them in an aquarium or flower pot.
I dig carnelian in new jersey for the last 7 years, love your videos!!!
What do you do with all that beautiful Carnelian?
It has become apparent to me, after viewing several different videos by different people, that your knowledge of rockhounding is likely more efficacious as to actually finding stuff. i.e., which minerals are associated with different formations, where these formations are, what other indications locally are useful in a given area within that formation area for the intended mineral. This is knowledge many of us enthusiasts lack; we just go to known areas and look, which often is less rewarding. What would be your recommendation short of a university degree, of ways we could better our knowledge of these things? Which publications would you recommend? I mean, it's not enough for a USGS msp to show formations and minerals if you don't know what to look for! Appreciate any answers given. ;)
The USGS maps and their associated study reports and bulletins do give detailed information on the lithology of a given area. Then I usually have to look in a dictionary to interpret the geological nomenclature they use in those reports! For example, how many people know what a Xenolith is? Also, Nick Zentner’s UA-cam channel is valuable because he explains local geology in a way that’s easy to understand.
Natures stained glass 💗
Im from sw MI and ive had a time trying to identify an agate, lg one, this Carnelian is the closest Ive seen to it💗 deep red, light all the way through. 😊 found on Lk MI. Weko Beach. Bridgeman, MI.
We hit an area in NV which is loaded with carnelian & agate. Great video.
Where? I live in Nevada and would love to find one
It is down by B-17 near Middlegate. It may be closed off now as part of the Fallon Bombing Range.@@catereich6094
I hope this kid appreciates having such a smart father.
I appreciate having a smart kid!
@@vugmeister918 Good answer!
Oh btw i think ive seen all your videos other local or none local videos it seems i always find hard to watch full video due to something annoying. You guys are great! Wish i had a son . Ive got 5 daughters and they think rocks are boring. Keep them coming
Boy, I marked down a couple spots that looked promising from Google earth and took my daughter down last weekend, but wow! So many gates and no trespassing signs. We even saw the sign that said “absolutely no rockhounding activities permitted“. They are serious! I was hoping maybe we’d get lucky and find a fresh cut Road like you guys did. Did you just randomly find an open spot? All the creeks had no trespassing signs on them too!
Geez, sounds like you guys went further east to the Lucas Creek area.
Yeah, we did. Less east?
Great camera work.
25 is a great collector!
I don’t live too far from Lewis county, and I’ve heard that it’s a great place to look for carnelians. I’m just not sure where to go. Even though it’s unlikely, if anyone has any places they’re willing to share, I’d greatly appreciate it. I’ve been collecting agates my whole life
