  • Leuchtturm1917 is a notebook brand that we've recently started carrying. They're great build quality, a tremendous value, and have a slew of small details that we're excited to see. They're kind of a crossover from the pencil/ballpoint world, but they handle their fountain pen ink respectably. This video covers an overview of the brand and all of the different size and formats.
    Overview:
    1:32 Hardcover Notebooks in Pocket, Medium A5, and Master sizes
    5:27 Jottbooks
    6:51 Softcover Notebooks
    7:29 Pen Loops
    Closer Look at the Details:
    8:38 Jottbooks
    11:01 Hardcovers
    Since we recorded this original video, Leuchtturm1917 has completely refreshed the color options and now comes in the incredibly popular dot grid format in all colors. The dotted grid is commonly used for bullet journaling as well as many other uses.

    I love my Leuchtturm notebooks. I still have Moleskine's but now I've switched over to the 1917's for one main reason that I didn't see covered in the video: the rules/grids/dots are MUCH subtler than those in the Moleskine family. Also more subtle than Rhodia's lines. They're still perfectly functional, but when you have a page filled up with art, text, or whatever, the rules/dots almost disappear. My favorite is definitely the dots.

    Yeah, that's what I've been hearing. I think these Leuchtturms are great for what they are, and will make a lot of people happy. If there's one thing that's true, it's that no one notebook is perfect for everyone, so it's nice to have a variety of options out there.

    I have been an avid Moleskine user for years. However, in 2009 I bought a leather cover 1917 which I loved, but I started using it for doodles and really unorganized notes, which I regretted since it was such a great notebook. This week, I picked up a Twsbi diamond fountain pen and a brand new Leuchtturm leather cover notebook, and I have fallen in love with journaling all over again. The paper quality is way better than the Moleskines, and I don't know if I have written or smelled my notebook more this week. Anyways, this video was great insight prior to my purchase. Thanks!

    Hello...I know this is a pretty old video but I found your channel via Kara aka BohoBerry. I already have some items in my shopping cart on your website but had a few questions about the Leuchtturm1917 but this video answered those. Thanks and I'm a new subscriber and customer : )

    You guys are SO lucky to have so much choice and variety of pens, ink and stationery in the US. We in the UK, unless we shop online, have a crap selection in our shops.
    - I can only get blue/blue, black and blue/black Quink ink in my local stationers; nothing else, unless I shop online. We can get Moleskine notebooks, but there are so expensive. Thanks for bringing us so much choice to drool over, I am just glad that you ship to the UK.

    I found this video very thorough and soooo helpful. THANK YOU!!!I liked seeing the sizes in both your hands because it gave me a good sense of size. Being able to see the colors was nice too. I know the video is not recent, but it gave me some good info for making a notebook purchase as I am pretty ignorant about any brand that is not sold in school supply isle at my grocery store (🙄🤓) or the soft cover 5x8 Molskine. Thanks for genuinely caring about educating your customers about your products and the hobby of fountain pen joy!

    The pocket gray linen is relatively new, I don't know if there are plans to expand it to the larger notebooks. I'm definitely going to encourage them to offer it though, I really like the linen feel.

    Much refer Leuchtturm to Rhodia for fountain pens. Rhodia has this ‘coating’ which makes all my fountain pens write one grade finer than their nib size. Leuchtturm makes fountain pen writing look beautiful, the outlining and shading with inks show much better, and it’s a much more pleasurable fine velvety feel when you write. Team Leuchtturm for me. ☺️

  • @Gouletpens
    @Gouletpens  11 років тому

    Yeah, the pen loops are pretty cool. And you can totally stick them wherever you want, it doesn't have to be in a Leuchtturm notebook, or really any notebook for that matter! I don't know how the white will hold up over time, you could definitely assume it'll get dirty, just like anything white does. But I'm sure if you take care of it you can keep it looking nice. Save the black one for the backpacking trips : )

    Hi, Brian and Rachel! Seeing how you guys are on a streak - expanding your notebook offerings... How about you take a look at the Midori MD notebooks (and other related types of paper)? They are made in Japan, come in different formats, have THE most interesting packaging ever, and the paper is (in my opinion) the best out there. I think they're a bit pricey (never really compared them with other brands) but they're totally worth it. They are pretty hard to come by online. Just a suggestion. :-)

    I've used Leuchturm 1917's in preference to Moleskine for some time and found them to be pretty good. I use a Pelikan 805 and a large Boheme both with medium nibs and have had no issues with ghosting or bleedthrough( Pelikan 4001, Noodlers Black, MB Midnight Blue). What I have found is that the plain versions seem to have better quality paper than the lined ones? This becomes noticeable if like me you make watercolour sketches in your notebook. Its true of Moleskines too.

    Well, in the US you pretty much need to shop online, too. Unless you live in a major city, it's rare to even have a local pen shop. We're so spread out here in the US, that it's not unusual for it to be a 3-4 hour drive for someone to get to a 'local' pen shop!

  • @Gouletpens
    @Gouletpens  11 років тому +1

    Interesting! I don't know if there is any distinct difference between the different rulings of paper, but it could be. This is complete speculation, but it could be that there is a different coating/sizing on the plain paper, or that they're made from different mills.

    Great review. I like the notebook better than other options with higher quality paper- but I am interested in the inks you may suggest that minimize ghosting if I intend to use both sides of the page (which I do). I am using Diamine Prussian Blue now, and it is good, but more options would be nice.

    I prefer Rhodia, too, but I respect Leuchtturm. I don't know whether you're asking me or telling me about the prices, but here in the US Leuchtturm is just a bit over half the price of a comparable Rhodia journal.

    I've looked into them before and tried contacting Midori to no avail. I don't know that they have any distributorship established in the US, which would explain why it's so hard to find. They're on my radar, but we're not going to pursue them right away.

    Is the cover paper of the Leuchtrum pocket notebook usually glued to the notebook? My cover paper/pamplet was glued to the inside of the notebook cover and I thought that was very strange. I had to cut it off and there are still parts of the paper glued inside.

  • @Gouletpens
    @Gouletpens  11 років тому

    Hey, you gotta work with what you have. You can still get a lot of enjoyment out of writing on cheap paper, it just narrows your parameters for getting the most enjoyment out of your inks.

    Having said all that my preference is still the A5 Plain Rhodia Notebook. I like the soft cover and it handles fountain pen and watercolour the best. One last point here in the UK although I have to buy these notebooks on line the Rhodia and the Leuchturm(Lighthouse) are almost the same price?

    For the same money as Moleskine, definitely better choice. Broader nibs and wetter ink still doesn't work flawlessly but much better than Moleskine equivalent. Staufen Premium in A5 are my choice, cheaper, with very good, smooth 90g paper but they don't look as nice.

    Is the large hard cover a good option for note taking for college? Especially for chemistry and biology lecture where i have to draw diagrams, would the dotted sheets be better than lined?

    • @Gouletpens
      @Gouletpens  7 років тому +1

      The Master Slim (www.gouletpens.com/leuchtturm1917-hard-cover-notebooks/c/93/?sortBy=productName+asc&facetValueFilter=Tenant~Overall_Size%3Aother) is definitely a good option, especially for those subjects. I think dotted is the best ruling as it is a bit more free form, better for diagrams. - Colin
