Love my 06 Highlander Hybrid, going on 230,000 + miles & still runs smooth, the only major repair done was the ABS battery, but as long as you keep up with the maintenance these SUVs are awesome.
@@latinonatorThanks for the head's up & the thumbs up on the 'O6 Highlander. I just picked up a salvaged hybrid with under 1OOK miles. Would love to discuss any regular recommended maintenance for its longevity. I previously drove an O1' V6 for 18 yrs.
Toyota HSD is always regenerative when braking - saves those brake pads, if nothing else! The "B" mode is for when in the mountains and going down a very long slope so that something something something to avoid overcharging the traction HV battery
Hey, nice mini “review”! I watched this and your 2004 review (fantastic video), and in this little review you squeezed in more info and fun facts than most regular full reviews I see. Good to see someone doing these older cars justice! I have a 2002 V6 Limited as my trusty daily driver, it has a whole bunch of suspension mods and some creature comforts to keep it up with the times. I love it more than any other SUV I have tried. Those LED tail lights were a must, so I had to get them onto my car as well.
Rear Heat button is basically an "on" button which activates the control panel in the 3rd row. After it's on, you can turn on the fan back there. If you don't turn it on, turning that 3rd row fan knob won't do anything.
Thanks for this review. After months of searching and looking I got a 2008 hybrid with relatively low miles. Everything you said is spot on and yours is one of the few reviews of this era of hybrid. (I realize 2008 is a new model from 2006 but im guessing a lot of the hybrid stuff was similar, like going from gen2 prius to gen3 prius). The brake feel is interesting, there are some videos on here about some of these having an ABS issue. Mine does seem a bit odd even compared to my Prius. The B mode should very distinctly feel different, it should feel kind of like '1' or '2' in an ordinary transmission.
When using the 3rd row you need to move the 2nd row seats forwards to balance the leg room between the 2nd and 3rd rows (I typically move the 1st row forwards a bit too to share leg room between all 3 rows). The 2nd row seats can move forwards/backwards as well as tilt. The 3rd row seats can also tilt but don't move forward/backwards. I find there is enough leg room (just) for 7 grown-ups to use all 3 rows (with smaller people in the 3rd row). Personally I think this is an awesome car (2006 Highlander Hybrid Limited).
Great quick review, "quick for a highlander" best describes the hybrid model 😂 I wish they still did the v6 with the hybrid powertrain in the new model but oh well, thanks for taking the time to do this one!
@@grizzlyaddams3606 That is correct, never said otherwise, the new sienna is a four cylinder hybrid only instead of the old Highlander which had a 6 cylinder hybrid option.
Great review Bern. I have an '06 Hybrid Limited and have loved it ever since I bought it 6 years ago. It currently has 224000 kms (140000 miles) on it and has served me very well. I'm thinking of getting a newer one only because the body is starting to rust (lots of road salt here in Ottawa, Canada) despite having it oil sprayed/rust proofed yearly since I've owned it. I'm a fan of the CVT/hybrid combo... very responsive - especially when passing and so smooth. No jerky upshifts/downshifts. My next vehicle will definitely be a Highlander Hybrid.
Excellent review Sir! My Wife and I are seriously considering the 2006 Highlander Hybrid to replace or 2008 Trailblazer! Can't wait to try one when the time is right!
I have an 06 with 300k miles on it. Only ever had to do the timing belt every 90k miles, tires, brakes and oil changes. It's been up and down the rocky mountains hundreds of times through horrid snowstorms, cruised through some gnarly jeep trails in moab, trudged through 4 feet of snow going up a steep ski hill and all the way across the country dozens of times. I would 200% recommend this car to anybody.
I own a 2006 Toyota Highlander hybrid. Over the years beside normal maintenance items such as brakes the SVU required replacement of all 4 power window regulators & motors, 2 radiators, radiator fan assembly & frame, climate control system, passenger side taillight assembly, ac/heater blower motor & the most expensive being 2 brake actuator replacements at more than $2,400 each. The brake actuators are only on the hybrid version and eliminated any cost savings thru less fuel consumption for being a hybrid and then some. Also, the brake actuators replacement left the vehicle at the Toyota dealers' shop for a few days resulting in rental car costs. I will never get a hybrid again.
I also plan on supercharging it my highlander considering the fact that even tho the supercharger only came in the 3.0 which is the 1mz. It can literally bolt up to my 3mz modified highlander
Have a 2006 toyota highlander limited hybrid. But it is showing 'check vsc and check hybrid system ' the slippery and wheel signs will come. I do not know what to do to correct it. I have taken it technicians couple of times without success. Can it be the hybrid battery is weak?
I ain’t gonna lie I’m only interested in it bc I tend to modify it. I already have a regular gas one and it already goes fast for what it is and it catches people off guard when they hear and see it flying by. Hell even cops are surprised by it too.
I know this is a old comment, but I was wondering, how do you modify cars? How do you get into it because I want to get a hybrid Highlander like this one 2006 that has 138,000 and I want to get to modifying, but where did you start?
you can move the 2nd row forward to give the people in the 3rd row a little more room, still not great but I had my Gas V6 2007 Highlander 6 heads deep and we just put the two smallest guys in the 3rd row. Man it was dog slow with all that weight.
This was an infamous year for invertor/convertor failures,, and they were recalled. But if it missed the recall, you are asking for trouble, as a replacement is very expensive, far more than the value of the car.
Got one with 430k miles and absolutely beat up on but still starts up and drives somehow lol Eats up oil like nothing and maintainance was severely neglected 😬
Hi I hope you see this and can respond soon, as I am thinking about getting a used 06 Highlander Hybrid but it has almost 300,000 miles so I'm wondering what suggestions do you have??
Thats a LOT of miles. No need to worry about the battey. You can swap dead cells for around $200. You have to think HALF. So 320k is actually 170k on each engine. Still a LOT! Good at 200k tho.
I’ve thought about it - I enjoy the older cars a little more in general, and it’s been getting difficult to film new cars at dealerships, so maybe in the future if I can get press cars!
For a lot of people, it doesn't make sense to buy a new car bc of the depreciation and reviews like this are golden for people in the market for a specific used vehicle.
These are one of those used car gems most people don’t know about it
