For the curious (like me) I looked it up and apparently this is Charlie Enright's old boat which raced in the 2014/15 and 2018/19 Volvo Ocean Race around the world racing events. The boat was called "Team Alvimedica" for the 2014 race and "Vestas 11th Hour Racing" for the 2018 event. The boat took 5th place in both events.
Thanks! I am very into the design aspect of sailing so I was listening for design info that never came. So going from memory, that would make this a VO 70? and that was the first year of "one design" boats for the ocean race. The 70s were intended to eliminate the tendency to build ultralight for "winner takes all" boats that were embarrassingly fragile. The cost and attrition rate of the previous ocean race demanded change. That said, the 70s were still only designed for one OR. The next year they moved on to an even more robust design for the 65s, intended to last at least 2 ORs with pooled maintenance and plenty of offshore racing between.
@@jonathantough4271 So this is the boat that went aground off Africa? I remember it was Vestas, but not "11th hour". The other 65s went around again in the last OR but this one didn't?
You guys are living the dream. It is so fortunate you started living life right out of college. You have come so far...literally. Forgive me for being just a little bit jealous.❤
It's been 8 months since you two have sailed? WOW! But, doing your first sail in months on such a serious racing sailboat, . . . Double WOW! Thanks for taking us with you. : - ) My small 20 foot "pocket yacht" is only a medium performance boat. There are many faster boats in its class. But I like it and I could afford it, with hardly any money! : - ) So there's that.
"But I like it and I could afford it," sounds like an awesome boat, meets two of the most important criteria 👍 My Hobie TI has some similarities, I could afford it and it's fun to sail, no boat is perfect, there are always compromises you have to make.
Stuff the like button, where is the love button? Best 'guest' footage of a decent race yacht I've ever seen. Very realistic and no theatrics. Thank you, I'll be sharing this with my crew.
What an amazing experience! Love you both, looking forward to whatever you do next! Living the same experience, and my escape is the inspiration you provide ❤
I love how Dan is a bloke and throws his bag over the fence, then almost effortlessly straddles over it. Then the master (who is much shorter) shows how its really done. Interesting video, thank for the upload.
I guess that was the delivery mainsail rather than the racing main because it looked a little tired. What a great experience, one of your best videos (for me at least) but I do enjoy your channel. With those freeze dried meals I always find they are much bette if you give them longer in the packet to rehydrate than they say. If you wrap the packet up having added water they stay warmer while hydrating.
I love it how you found this awesome opportunity to take a sailing break for yourselves as well as a very interesting and informative video for us, the viewers. What sailing enthusiast wouldn't want to be on board a ship of this type and magnitude and have two of the best sailing- documenters to show us the deck and lower areas and all the cool stuff happening on the deck. I'm not British but I love to say "Cheers!"
For all that have sailed and felt that calming inner soul sharing the love inside us as wind & water takes hold, Its like Mother nature gives us a big fat kiss of life. Enjoy it while we can. thx guys..
A different experience. Shorter watches and both of you on at the same time. Quite a different experience being on a racing boat, even though it's not race conditions. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
I LOVED that! 2 very experienced sailors (maybe a smidgeon rusty) on an ocean going racing yacht - what's not to like? I hope Mother Nature throws a lot of wind at you "tomorrow" and makes you work hard - we'll find out next week. The toilet situation isn't great, to be fair ... I might not be able to 'go' in such a situation!
What a nice change of pace and a neat racer sailboat in Old Italy. Look forward to you getting back in Action fixing your Cruiser backup take care, thanks much and catch you next time❤❤❤
Cracking Vide, fantastic to see you back on the water and what away to change up the video. I love what you guys are doing look forward to the next episode.
I have a warm place in my heart for this kind of sailing. Short version -- I was part of a four-man crew bringing the Falcon 2000 from West Palm, Fla to Newport, RI in 2009. At the time, she was hardly more than ring-hulled carbon fiber, a gel coat, and a rig. Lucky for me, the other three are commercial captains. Big fun, despite a some decidedly foul weather during my 2-4 am watch.
That whistling song at the end always makes me think of the Old Spice commercial. Dan would've made a great TV spokesperson for that company, except he probably wasn't born yet.
Old Spice used to be marketed in the UK with film of a dude surfing a huge wave to a soundtrack of Carmina Burana. Mention "the old spice music" to someone of my generation in the UK and they'll hum it back to you. Would looove to see Uma hooning along during a proper blow to that theme tune!
Love your videos, quick question do they sometimes convert these boats in normal boats or is this just not possible because they are so demanding, wow I love everything about that boat but the toilet looks like some kind of medieval torture contraption
I saw a youtube by an electrical engineer on his boat who cautioned about the BMS system shutting down and thereby ruining your alternator since it had no load to feed. Therefore a must to have one standard battery. I thought Lithium Iron were almost as good 95% as Lithium Ion but far safer from a fire perspective. Great video as I want to do the same on a Contour34SC Tri and add 2 Watt&Sea water generators as well.
Cool video racing way different than cruising. I am glad you guy are resting from your labor fixing your boat. Next thing I will see you racing around the world on the Vendee globe.
I am sure you loved that tour, a bigger, lighter and faster racing boat makes lot's of fun. Your video reminded me about my the weekly sailing tours on the same type of boat "Nireas" in Limassol. I am really missing that. Our keel was moveable from starboard to portside. Are you sure that keel was moveable from front to aft?
This is a cool experience. I went racing for one day with this boat in the fall 2021. it is soooo different to a normal boat. Our 49‘ Aluminium boat is fast but no comparison to this one :-)
I would love to sail a boat like that. I have been on board on one of them for short time in the dock while they were eating dinner in Copenhagen in Denmark after the race where they ended in Gothenburg. I asked if I could to look inside and one of the crew said yes. It is an amazing boat.
I'm curious what it feels like when the canting keel is in action. The feeling of water ballast being filled on an older Volvo was just astonishing, well to a smaller keelboat and dighy sailor. The acceleration, then the flat boat suddenly zipping along at 20 knots in seemingly light winds.
@@SailingUma Real turmat IS actually VERY good. I find the breakfasts to be the best. And all of them have way more calories in each serving than any normal person needs!!

Just pee off the back of the boat. You'll be good. Hold the number 2 till you make land fall that's that.
Excellent story telling (and video quality) from a situation you don't have full control over. Well done.

I think it is a VO 70 circa 2015. The 65s are still in active duty -big buck commercial sponsors...
Nope it's a 65. Still in active duty. Just finished The Ocean Race a few months ago.
