The DSi XL is such an amazing handheld console. I managed to find a metalic rose one for $17.24 at a goodwill electronic center. They said it couldn't read games. When I got home though I tried one of my games in it and it worked just fine.
@@kurtlamprecht93 They tried to use a broken game in it and assumed it couldn't read games. It did have volume issuse due to a lot of greese in the battery compartment and volume button area.

And it works and looks amazing! They were way more affordable before covid happened and non-gamers/collectors jumped into the hobby.

It makes me happy seeing people talk about the DSi XL as of recent! I was probably actually one of the few kids to even own this thing when it first released cause my great grand mother thought I needed a upgrade from my DS Lite lol. I to this day still have it and it has such a good crisp display for playing DS games. Sadly I don't think this verison of the DS had alot of color variety so I have the burgundy color one which isn't a bad color but not a favorite of mine either. I will say it feels so nice to hold and I prefer it over the glossy finish ones that other DS's got
The DSi XL is probably one of the sleekest console/handheld Nintendo has made next to the Switch OLED. That design still holds up today and looks better than the New 3DS XL.
@@Giga1023 really ? I find the new 3ds xl design better because of how good it looks on the inside. The wide top screen, the circle pad and menu button placement make it look modern even next to the switch oled.
@@Gecko730 I find that the matte bottom that the DSi XL has is less prone to fingerprints compared to the New 3DS XL but that’s not to say that the 3DS doesn’t look good though
technically, you can play the DS games in native res on the 3DS if you hold select or start while the game boots. It ends up being smaller than the DSi XL though in terms of size. So cool! Might pick up an XL one day, I was always jealous of my friend's wine red DSi XL in elementary school lol.
i totally share the idea of a personal "perfect" system its not just the better quality of the image or so but all the feelings around it the memories, the favourite color, the original feels (with 5 gen pokemon games in your case) all of that is amazing i have too a new 3ds xl which i can do everthing on it but i often feel the need to buy my original ds lite (the lime one) just for the memories i recently bought a lot of stuff for my nintendo wii even if an emulator would outoput a better image for moderns tv's, its just fun and feels right imo one thing i hope for the future is that the hardware modding community for systems like new 3ds's will grow cant wait for custom shells like transparent or maybe even originalds lite colors like lime green or pink pearl! graat video btw!
@@fiffy6572 Nice find! the same here for me, I want to buy a teal DS Lite for this same nostalgia reason. I never held a DSi in real life until about 3 weeks ago though. I never had one and didn't know anyone who has. but the SECOND I held one in a thrift store, I knew I had to have it. its 0% nostalgia for me, the console was just so tiny, light, sleek and smooth, yet felt quite premium and strong. Its insane that it all fits in that tiny little form factor. Loving it so far.
I am hoping the 3ds modding scene grows over time, those consoles are delightful. Especially the "new" one where you can swap out faceplates and customize it.
really nice video :) i've noticed the difference too in proportions and quality when playing a DS game on a DS/DSi vs. 3DS and already played any non-3DS game on my DSi for that reason but the way you showed it side by side wowwwww the upscaling is way worse and blurrier than i had ever thought.
I bought a New 3DS XL Galaxy design. And I love it! Really the ultimate handheld console, from Gameboy games to 3DS. Just awesome 👌 The all in one Nintendo handheld!
So a couple of things: 1. You can actually forward DS games on the 3DS home menu and it’s super cool 2. You can make DS games on the 3DS full screen unblurred (but it’s a bit stretched) (To do any of this, the 3DS needs to be modded) I still keep my DSi XL because it’s super cool, but when I found out the 3DS could do all those things I switched immediately
If I could go back in time and convince John S. Nintendo to put in IPS screens on all the 3DSes I'd give him a smooch. The 3ds has so many features like this which make it basically perfect but the screens are so disappointing compared to the dsi xl. The difficulty of finding a 3ds with the fancy IPS screens is the only thing stopping me from switching fully right now

My first DS was the Lite Polar White, had tons of hours playing Resident Evil Deadly Silence, Mario Kart was a must as well Final Fantasy, sadly my sisters used my system as well years later my daughter, poor fella died, still have it with me in it’s original box, managed to get a DSi for 10 bucks at a First Cash store and is loaded with all those games that never played before 😊
YES! My friend think's I'm weird for using a DSi when I have a really nice 3DS. I do kinda get that it's nice having all your games on one device..... but I just use an R4 so I can switch between consoles as I please. Best of both worlds
still got my dsi xl from Christmas many years ago and I have so many memories on it, I used to have an r4 card that had pokemon black on it and it was my favourite game back then.
I love the DSi! I remember getting it on launch day and falling in love and messing with all the cool new features. I always wanted to get the XL version but never got the chance to. Maybe I should look into it now lol. Also, PKSM does allow you to transfer your Pokemon from your SD and there's also a patch for Dream Radar and Poke Transporter to work with games installed on the SD card as well. They're 3DS only unfortunately, so it would defeat the purpose of playing on your DSi, but it's definitely an option for those interested!
Beside games you can put other 3 homebrew apps to make it more a complete multimedia little dream box. 1. DSLibris for EPUB format books, you will not need to carry another tablet just to read books 2. there is an app [forgot the name] to play movies, al-tho you will need a soft to transform the format 3, there is also some audio player [the interface looks like some classic IPod] to play your favorite music.

I truly regret while stuck in a bad spot selling my metallic pink DSi XL, yes I needed the money, but now my childhood DSi is just gone to time, who knows where it is now. Makes me sad, reminds me of that shitty time and reminds me I'll never have it back. Prices are too high for a good condition one of these for me to justify purchasing one rn but, maybe one day I can bring myself to purchase it (used and scratched up ones for $80 is just obnoxious), or maybe by then it'll be even more of annoying purchase. But yeah, seeing this is so nostalgic and cool. It's so so nice to see one so well taken care of and loved.

My Nintendo DSi XL is currently with me on vacation. One of the greatest handheld consoles of all time. I own a brown one and am happy with it. However, seeing this pink one really makes me jealous. It's so pretty! I would love to own one of these myself. Hopefully, I can find one... 😅 😱
That is one beautiful console you've got. I recently bought a Nintendo DSI myself, but not the XL one. It's a matte black and it's homebrew (Twilight Menu), and I just can't wait to play it. I've been a Gameboy series fan, especially the GBA models, and been recently learning how to repair and mod it myself. I'm just glad to see that the community is still alive and kicking :D
have I the exact same dsi but I bought it when I was a kid back when it was the newest handheld they had. I still use the charger that came with it to charge my 3ds haha
The DSI Xl is easily the most nostalgic of all of DS models to me. It was basically my childhood and it’s just a great console with many great games. I do remember it being pretty large for my small hands at the time though 😂

The dsi and the new 3dsxl have different screens which is why it looks a little different. My n3dsxl has a top ips screen and it looks amazing when playing all games. I love it
I got my old Dsi xl from a cousin in Canada, and it's safe to say its still in very good condition despite so many years of having it. It was passed down yet still felt like new to use. Especially since i recieved many games! My favorites were especially the spongebob one, mario kart and tomb raider: underworld
I love the DSi XL too haha the native resolution is def worth it-mine is in blue :) I actually gave my mom that same pink one with a plastic case for a birthday last year with a buncha games installed. She mainly played Peggle and PvZ lol but still trying to get her to try Prof Layton :3

The World Ends With You is so amazing! I beat it last summer on my lavender 2dsxl but while playing I put a scratch on my touch screen D; I wish I installed a screen protector sooner. So the memory of the game will always have that little blemish as the game to cause a bad scratch. But looking past that, it's a beautiful DS must play.
I am also on the hunt for a Dsi XL midnight blue at the moment, for the exact same reasons you said in the video. I also have a N3DSXL but I need a DSi XL too. :) Also, your voice is so soothing... :)
i agree with you on the screen difference!! i got the exact same dsi xl a couple years ago to match my childhood metallic rose ds lite and i LOVE IT so much !!!! the ips screens are insanely sharp & honestly the dsi's volume + select button combo to change the screen brightness was such a game changer when it came out, i dont know why they went back to a volume slider with the 3ds family
I totally agree about the blurry screen on the New 3DS XL when playing DS games. I too have a New 3DS XL and a DSi XL. I keep my DSi XL because DS games just look soooo much better on the DSi XL. Super crisp image and texts. I know I can play in native resolution on the 3DS but it just isn't the same for me.
The DSi XL is such a quality console. It turns right on with no wait time. I have two of them. I also have a new 3ds XL which is awesome, but it takes forever to turn on, the power button is in the worst place... DSi XL is so much nicer.
I got my maroon dsi xl from a shopgoodwill auction about two years ago for only $40! It was shockingly in near perfect condition and still works great. One of the best purchases ive made in recent memory lol
I noticed the blurry display for DS games too which was a major bummer, Never knew the DSI XL was the same size as my N3DS XL and how its image looks! There is that trick for the 3ds where if you hold start when starting a DS game it'll go to its native size.. which is still kind of janky but it works lol. Tempted to give the DSI a try after seeing the image difference but I already have two original DS systems to play in sun with. O 🐳
I've recently been collecting 3DS and DSi! I have the pokemon black and white DSi and the Dark Brown and Gold DSi XL. It's dope your got your dream model!
I'm glad someone else agrees with having both a n3dsxl and dsi XL, it really does look so much better on the dsi XL. What I've also done is hardmodded a usb c port on my n3ds XL and it's made it so much easier to take with me, and I'll eventually do the same with my dsi XL so it'll be more handy for commutes. Another benefit is that the charging connector doesn't degrade as much as the proprietary dsi/3ds connector 🙂

I own this exact color and hard case only mine is blue. That pink dsixl is stunning and in my opinion the best looking one then the other color versions.

Seems there's a lot of people confused about what you can do on the 3DS. 1. Yes you can scale down to native res with holding start/select, but the 1:1 scale looks tiny on the 3DS screen (DPI related). 2. You can use TWPatcher to remove "blurriness", but that's not the issue, the non integer scaling on the 3DS is the problem and you get garbage non uniform pixels. The TWPatcher scalers look like absolute trash. At least the filtered version on the default 3DS scaling hides some of the uniformity, the TWPatch scales look really bad. 3. The actually tech in the 3D screen is inferior when playing DS games than the IPS screens in the DSi XL 4. DSi XL does no scaling, the games play at a native res, but the DPI of the screen is larger so they can be played on the bigger screen natively.
@@jordanmadick I much prefer the DSi XL because I like the bigger screen. The pixels are a little bigger but not much, and it just makes the DS library look amazing.

We both bought DSi XL’s for the same reason ahhah. Pokémon gen 5 is amazing. I have several DS’s and my sister’s old DSi XL. But I don’t like the buttons on the DS lite because they are mushy, and my 3DS’s (New XL and launch model) make everything blurry and washed out because of the 3D polarizer. I’d use my sister’s old DSi (I essentially own it now) but it’s in too good of condition (it looks brand new), so I would hate to scratch it. My wine red DSi is in the mail, and then I can finally play with my soft resetted shiny Snivy :)
My charcoal DSi XL was getting lonely so I went out and got a dark aqua blue DSi XL to keep it company. It was at this moment that I realized that I needed help with my Nintendo hand held addiction.

On the 3DS, if you press start + select and keep them pressed while you launch a DS game, it will launch at the native resolution, not stretched. But it will be in a smaller window. It's a tradeoff. You will have a higher resolution, it will be sharper but smaller. If it doesnt work, try to forward the games on the desktop of the 3DS, not lauchin the games in twilight menu. NDSForwarder is what you need.
I hear the DSi XL has an enjoyably weighty, solid & generally top notch build quality. Just a pleasing thing in aesthetic terms to handle and to own. Considering buying one if I can get it at a decent price so I can do my DS games justice. Currently they’re stuck being played on a 2DS (yes, the original door wedge style one), and I sense that this offends them.
I hacked my Psvita it plays gb/gbc/gba/nds fine ihave the 1000 series and the oled screen makes the colors just pop. And i love the premium feel of the handheld. In the future i want to reshell my gbasp with ips screen

Had Switch Lite , Regular Switch, N3DS , 3DS XL , N3DS XL, Advance SP with ips and now I have DSI XL and it's the best choice compared to price. The DSI XL have IPS , best battery life also easy to hack.
4:30 - Sure, native resolution much greater than blurry not integer scaling... but you can play DS games on 3DS in native resolution to by pressing "select"+"start" - cons: black bars image will be smaller

YES! My friend think's I'm weird for using a DSi when I have a really nice 3DS. I do kinda get that it's nice having all your games on one device..... but I just use an R4 so I can switch between consoles as I please. Best of both worlds
still got my dsi xl from Christmas many years ago and I have so many memories on it, I used to have an r4 card that had pokemon black on it and it was my favourite game back then.
I love the DSi! I remember getting it on launch day and falling in love and messing with all the cool new features. I always wanted to get the XL version but never got the chance to. Maybe I should look into it now lol.
Also, PKSM does allow you to transfer your Pokemon from your SD and there's also a patch for Dream Radar and Poke Transporter to work with games installed on the SD card as well. They're 3DS only unfortunately, so it would defeat the purpose of playing on your DSi, but it's definitely an option for those interested!
I'm so jealous of that DS case, it looks so premium.
Beside games you can put other 3 homebrew apps to make it more a complete multimedia little dream box.
1. DSLibris for EPUB format books, you will not need to carry another tablet just to read books
2. there is an app [forgot the name] to play movies, al-tho you will need a soft to transform the format
3, there is also some audio player [the interface looks like some classic IPod] to play your favorite music.

I truly regret while stuck in a bad spot selling my metallic pink DSi XL, yes I needed the money, but now my childhood DSi is just gone to time, who knows where it is now. Makes me sad, reminds me of that shitty time and reminds me I'll never have it back. Prices are too high for a good condition one of these for me to justify purchasing one rn but, maybe one day I can bring myself to purchase it (used and scratched up ones for $80 is just obnoxious), or maybe by then it'll be even more of annoying purchase. But yeah, seeing this is so nostalgic and cool. It's so so nice to see one so well taken care of and loved.
That sucks, I hope you find a cheap one eventually in good condition! If it helps, I got this for $75-80 so it’s definitely out there, just gotta be patient

Maybe I was being a bit too pessimistic because I had been recently scrolling on ebay and seeing some really over priced ones again 😭 I've slowly been gathering up all my lost or sold electronics from when I was a kid, though, so this one will have to be the next.

The market is tough now but I just got my DSi XL for 100 bucks in great condition. Was really worried it'd have issues since so many resellers list ones that are scratched up and poorly taken care of, but the one I ordered came in looking almost new and I was almost losing hope to find one that wasn't beat up. My Nintendo DSi XL is currently with me on vacation. One of the greatest handheld consoles of all time. I own a brown one and am happy with it. However, seeing this pink one really makes me jealous. It's so pretty! I would love to own one of these myself. Hopefully, I can find one... 😅 😱
That is one beautiful console you've got. I recently bought a Nintendo DSI myself, but not the XL one. It's a matte black and it's homebrew (Twilight Menu), and I just can't wait to play it.
I've been a Gameboy series fan, especially the GBA models, and been recently learning how to repair and mod it myself. I'm just glad to see that the community is still alive and kicking :D

have I the exact same dsi but I bought it when I was a kid back when it was the newest handheld they had. I still use the charger that came with it to charge my 3ds haha
The DSI Xl is easily the most nostalgic of all of DS models to me. It was basically my childhood and it’s just a great console with many great games. I do remember it being pretty large for my small hands at the time though 😂

The dsi and the new 3dsxl have different screens which is why it looks a little different. My n3dsxl has a top ips screen and it looks amazing when playing all games. I love it
I didn't know about TN and IPS screens until this video, but found out now I have the new 3dsxl w IPS top screen too. We lucked out 🎉

I got my old Dsi xl from a cousin in Canada, and it's safe to say its still in very good condition despite so many years of having it. It was passed down yet still felt like new to use. Especially since i recieved many games! My favorites were especially the spongebob one, mario kart and tomb raider: underworld
I love the DSi XL too haha the native resolution is def worth it-mine is in blue :) I actually gave my mom that same pink one with a plastic case for a birthday last year with a buncha games installed. She mainly played Peggle and PvZ lol but still trying to get her to try Prof Layton :3

The World Ends With You is so amazing! I beat it last summer on my lavender 2dsxl but while playing I put a scratch on my touch screen D; I wish I installed a screen protector sooner. So the memory of the game will always have that little blemish as the game to cause a bad scratch. But looking past that, it's a beautiful DS must play.

i agree with you on the screen difference!! i got the exact same dsi xl a couple years ago to match my childhood metallic rose ds lite and i LOVE IT so much !!!! the ips screens are insanely sharp & honestly the dsi's volume + select button combo to change the screen brightness was such a game changer when it came out, i dont know why they went back to a volume slider with the 3ds family

I totally agree about the blurry screen on the New 3DS XL when playing DS games. I too have a New 3DS XL and a DSi XL. I keep my DSi XL because DS games just look soooo much better on the DSi XL. Super crisp image and texts. I know I can play in native resolution on the 3DS but it just isn't the same for me.
The DSi XL is such a quality console. It turns right on with no wait time. I have two of them.
I also have a new 3ds XL which is awesome, but it takes forever to turn on, the power button is in the worst place... DSi XL is so much nicer.
I got my maroon dsi xl from a shopgoodwill auction about two years ago for only $40! It was shockingly in near perfect condition and still works great. One of the best purchases ive made in recent memory lol
I noticed the blurry display for DS games too which was a major bummer, Never knew the DSI XL was the same size as my N3DS XL and how its image looks! There is that trick for the 3ds where if you hold start when starting a DS game it'll go to its native size.. which is still kind of janky but it works lol. Tempted to give the DSI a try after seeing the image difference but I already have two original DS systems to play in sun with. O 🐳

I'm glad someone else agrees with having both a n3dsxl and dsi XL, it really does look so much better on the dsi XL.
What I've also done is hardmodded a usb c port on my n3ds XL and it's made it so much easier to take with me, and I'll eventually do the same with my dsi XL so it'll be more handy for commutes. Another benefit is that the charging connector doesn't degrade as much as the proprietary dsi/3ds connector 🙂

I own this exact color and hard case only mine is blue. That pink dsixl is stunning and in my opinion the best looking one then the other color versions.

Seems there's a lot of people confused about what you can do on the 3DS.
1. Yes you can scale down to native res with holding start/select, but the 1:1 scale looks tiny on the 3DS screen (DPI related).
2. You can use TWPatcher to remove "blurriness", but that's not the issue, the non integer scaling on the 3DS is the problem and you get garbage non uniform pixels. The TWPatcher scalers look like absolute trash. At least the filtered version on the default 3DS scaling hides some of the uniformity, the TWPatch scales look really bad.
3. The actually tech in the 3D screen is inferior when playing DS games than the IPS screens in the DSi XL
4. DSi XL does no scaling, the games play at a native res, but the DPI of the screen is larger so they can be played on the bigger screen natively.

@@jordanmadick I much prefer the DSi XL because I like the bigger screen. The pixels are a little bigger but not much, and it just makes the DS library look amazing.

i just bought a metallic rose DSi XL aswell, and it's so gorgeous, i also have a Nintendo DS Lite on metallic rose and an old 3ds pink (kinda like metallic rose color) but definitely the DSi XL it's my favorite one

We both bought DSi XL’s for the same reason ahhah. Pokémon gen 5 is amazing. I have several DS’s and my sister’s old DSi XL. But I don’t like the buttons on the DS lite because they are mushy, and my 3DS’s (New XL and launch model) make everything blurry and washed out because of the 3D polarizer. I’d use my sister’s old DSi (I essentially own it now) but it’s in too good of condition (it looks brand new), so I would hate to scratch it. My wine red DSi is in the mail, and then I can finally play with my soft resetted shiny Snivy :)
My charcoal DSi XL was getting lonely so I went out and got a dark aqua blue DSi XL to keep it company. It was at this moment that I realized that I needed help with my Nintendo hand held addiction.
Always been a ride or die standard DSi kinda person, it’s what I grew up with, and I always considered the XL format unnecessary on such limited hardware, but damn I really want one of these now ❗️

Dual IPS is also such a plus on top of native resolution.

That pretty sweet! I’ve got the ds lite I like it since I’m able to transfer Pokemon from 3rd gen to the 5th gen games
On the 3DS, if you press start + select and keep them pressed while you launch a DS game, it will launch at the native resolution, not stretched. But it will be in a smaller window. It's a tradeoff. You will have a higher resolution, it will be sharper but smaller.
If it doesnt work, try to forward the games on the desktop of the 3DS, not lauchin the games in twilight menu. NDSForwarder is what you need.
4:27 the 3ds does play them on their original resolution when you hold start and select while booting into the game.

I hear the DSi XL has an enjoyably weighty, solid & generally top notch build quality. Just a pleasing thing in aesthetic terms to handle and to own. Considering buying one if I can get it at a decent price so I can do my DS games justice. Currently they’re stuck being played on a 2DS (yes, the original door wedge style one), and I sense that this offends them.

I hacked my Psvita it plays gb/gbc/gba/nds fine ihave the 1000 series and the oled screen makes the colors just pop. And i love the premium feel of the handheld. In the future i want to reshell my gbasp with ips screen
I found my dsi XL when i was on vacation, in a drawer. Best find ever! It came with an r4 and when i figured out how to hack it i installed all the games i could wish for
Had Switch Lite , Regular Switch, N3DS , 3DS XL , N3DS XL, Advance SP with ips and now I have DSI XL and it's the best choice compared to price. The DSI XL have IPS , best battery life also easy to hack.

4:30 - Sure, native resolution much greater than blurry not integer scaling... but you can play DS games on 3DS in native resolution to by pressing "select"+"start" - cons: black bars image will be smaller
If you hold start of select on the 3ds when launching the title it will load in native resolution.
