      No one knows for sure, but some researchers believe it either came from Arabia or indigenous south Americans, the oldest form of needle work that could be considered crochet is from ancient china, as far as we know.

      Crochet as we know it in the modern day was created around the 15th to 17th century. It is important to note that although the first published crochet pattern emerged in 1824, there is substantial evidence to point to crochet being taught word of mouth rather than written. In the 19th century there was a huge rise in crochet. It was mainly used in a form now known as Irish Crochet, which takes the normal needle and bobbin lacework, and simplifies it down to really intricate crochet. Crochet was given a tremendous boost by Mlle. Riego de la Branchardiere, who was best known for her ability to take old-style needle and bobbin lace designs and turn them into crochet patterns that could easily be duplicated. She published many pattern books so that millions of women could begin to copy her designs. The rise in popularity did not end there and it continued throughout the 20th century. In the early 1900s it was used to make practical things like afghans and potholders along with some simple garments and rugs. It was during this time that potholders made their first appearance and became a staple of the crocheter’s repertoire. It was during this time that many types of yarn also came with small pattern samples and crochet guides. It didn't stop there it continued in popularity all the way through the 1960s and 70s where it was seen as a more free type of expression, especially in terms of clothes.

    Thank you Robin I finally finished my beautiful sunflower blanket for my daughter. It measures 142cms x 92cms in total 77 squares (11 squares down x 7 squares across). I used the same colours. It took 4 x 100g balls of gold, 2 x 100g balls of brown (with 84g left over), 6 x 100g of cream (with 33g left over) and included the zig zag joining of squares and 3 x 100g pumpkin (with 46g left over). Hope these calculations helps everyone. I will try and attach a photo of my finished project. 😊

    I made the traditional sunflower colors using this pattern and gave it to my granddaughter for Christmas last year. Also made a 16" pillow with a sunflower and leaves in the middle and a bolster with sunflowers on each end. Then I made her a sunflower coaster set in a crocheted container for her birthday. This was very time consuming, but looked wonderful.

    This is one of the sunflower square tutorial I've watched. I've watched several others just for my square come out uneven and "wavy" because it was completely flat. I have no idea why in the tutorial theirs came out flat while mine didn't, i know i was following the directions accurately because i focused on every detail to make it perfect. All that trying discouraged me to stopping crochet for a month until i finally got the courage to come back at it and i found your video. This video not only helped me make a proper flat square it also gave me back the courage to pursue crochet. Thank you thank you thank you, your work is very much appreciated.

    I love your style of teaching. When I was teaching in a computer lab (those were a thing back in the 80’s) and I would tell the kids that if they made a mistake to STOP put your hands on you head and say “Oh No!”. This took their hands from the keyboard and gave them a moment to remember how to Zap the mistake by hitting command Z. As soon as you said STOP it took me back to those days and reminded me don’t just forge ahead when learning a new technique, count carefully before proceeding.😂

    I have to say Ms. Robin you are by far the best crochet teacher I have come across. I recently picked up crocheting, I can do a few stitches but the Granny square is a whole different story. I have unsuccessfully tried to learn how to crochet a granny square just the square and I can't. Not until I came across your channel and I DID IT!!🎉 I have made a Sunflower Granny square 🎉🎉🎉🎉 I'm so happy it's the little things that bring joy. Thank you Thank you for your patience, for going at an easy enough pace to follow and of course your great teaching skills. Looking forward to learning more from you.😊😊

    Hi Robin another lovely pattern which you make a delight to follow. If I may ask you a crochet 🧶 question. I am going to buy some pure Arran wool from the sheep on the Island of Tiree in the Hebrides. Hand spun on the islands . I have order two 100 grms balls in either cream and brown or two cream. ( Haven’t decided yet ) What would be your recommendations for a beginner but getting much better! !!! Thank you Pamela

    • @HookedbyRobin
      @HookedbyRobin  3 роки тому

      My only recommendation would be to use it for something special for yourself! Hand spun (and hand dyed) yarn is a weakness of mine, I love it! Aran is a good weight too - not too thin; not too thick 😍

      My squares are approximately 5 inches using the chunky yarn and 6mm hook. I'm actually making a cardigan with the squares I show in the beginning and in the thumbnail! If you want slightly smaller squares for your cardigan you can use double knit yarn with a 4mm hook 😀
