🔥 Frequently Asked Questions:
Do you have a left handed version of this video? If you are left handed, you can convert ANY video on UA-cam yourself! Simply go to www.mirrorthevideo.com/ and follow the instructions to mirror flip any video to convert to left handed!
How much yarn will I need? This is a very tricky question to answer as there are so many variables! How much yarn you need will depend on which yarn you choose, the thickness of that yarn, your tension and how large you want your finished project to be. I suggest making a small sample first so you can gauge how much yarn you'll need. If making a crochet square, you can weigh your finished square to work out how much yarn it used!
How many squares do I need for a blanket? That all depends on the size of the square you are making and how big you want your finished blanket to be! I always advise making one square first then measuring the size of it. From there you can work out how many squares you will need to get the blanket size you want 😀
Do you have the written pattern? Yes! I have written patterns to accompany my video tutorials on my website here: www.hookedbyrobin.com The written pattern is generally released a week or so after the video tutorial to ensure there are no errors in the video itself and to make amendments in the written version if any are found. All the written patterns are FREE to access on my website
How can I print the pattern from your website? Do you have downloadable PDF's? Not at this time no. This may change in the future but for now, I only provide the written pattern directly on my website.
Can you remake this video so it is slower? If the video speed is too fast, you can slow it down! 😀 See this video on exactly how: • How to Adjust the Spee...
Why do you use American stitch terminology? I learnt using USA stitch terms, long before I even knew there was a difference between UK & US terminology! American terms are my "first language" so to speak. If you need a conversion chart, I have one here! www.hookedbyrobin.com/crochet...

Could you do a magic circle for the beginning?
@@trojantman69 1:54 nope
Thanks for teaching sunburst square video
Thank you for this

All of a sudden I find myself pondering how crocheting was invented and how much of a complete genius the person who did so was. Amazing
No one knows for sure, but some researchers believe it either came from Arabia or indigenous south Americans, the oldest form of needle work that could be considered crochet is from ancient china, as far as we know.
Same. I was also wondering who created the hook 😂
@@luvsmetallica08 I read somewhere that it was originally called "shepherd's knitting"
Crochet as we know it in the modern day was created around the 15th to 17th century. It is important to note that although the first published crochet pattern emerged in 1824, there is substantial evidence to point to crochet being taught word of mouth rather than written. In the 19th century there was a huge rise in crochet. It was mainly used in a form now known as Irish Crochet, which takes the normal needle and bobbin lacework, and simplifies it down to really intricate crochet. Crochet was given a tremendous boost by Mlle. Riego de la Branchardiere, who was best known for her ability to take old-style needle and bobbin lace designs and turn them into crochet patterns that could easily be duplicated. She published many pattern books so that millions of women could begin to copy her designs. The rise in popularity did not end there and it continued throughout the 20th century. In the early 1900s it was used to make practical things like afghans and potholders along with some simple garments and rugs. It was during this time that potholders made their first appearance and became a staple of the crocheter’s repertoire. It was during this time that many types of yarn also came with small pattern samples and crochet guides. It didn't stop there it continued in popularity all the way through the 1960s and 70s where it was seen as a more free type of expression, especially in terms of clothes.
Thank you for explaining so much and graciously. You’re an amazing teacher. I’ve used this pattern more than a few times.
I LOVE that you don't have repetitive music playing in the back of your talking. Thankyou
Thank you Marilyn, I find music too distracting from the instructions.🤗🧶
Yes adhd brains can't handle all that lol
I also appreciate that!
Absolutely wonderful video and so easy to follow.!!!
It’s my third day of crocheting. Fact that I was able to complete it shows how incredible this tutorial is
Thank you so much, I’m glad you’ve got the hang of it!😃🧶
I think I’ve told you before, but you really ARE the BEST TEACHER on UA-cam! I love your easy to follow tutorials, your calm and lovely voice, and your beautiful patterns. Thank you for sharing your talent with us. ❤️ You really inspire me.
Aw thank you so much Stephanie! I'm glad my tutorials work for you 🥰
I agree! I love her tutorials and her soothing voice does help a lot!!! Her tutorials are my *FAVORITE* on UA-cam!!!
🤟😃❤️
@@kieralisekellystanchek6729 I agree! I am new to crochet and have looked up a number of tutorials. Robin's are by far the best - instructions are so clear and easy to follow.
I totally agree she makes it’s so easy to follow along!
Do you have a advertisement free pattern for this pattern? Do you have an Etsy shop?
Thank you Robin I finally finished my beautiful sunflower blanket for my daughter. It measures 142cms x 92cms in total 77 squares (11 squares down x 7 squares across). I used the same colours. It took 4 x 100g balls of gold, 2 x 100g balls of brown (with 84g left over), 6 x 100g of cream (with 33g left over) and included the zig zag joining of squares and 3 x 100g pumpkin (with 46g left over). Hope these calculations helps everyone. I will try and attach a photo of my finished project. 😊
What are the names of the three colors? I’d like to do the same. Thank you, Joy
Did you use a chunky yarn that needs a 6mm hook like the video or a lighter-weight yarn?
Julie, thank you for sharing the amt of yarn info. My daughter fell in love with this pattern and I want to make it for her for her birthday. It is very thoughtful to do that. 😀
Thank you for putting this information into the comments .
I absolutely love this design

What brand of yarn did u use?
Your videos are genuinely the only ones I can follow, no annoying music, and the way you teach is so clear, I struggled with other videos as they didn’t really clearly show grabbing the yarn at the back, you should teach in person master classes 🤣
😅 funnily enough, I originally started by teaching crochet in person before I did UA-cam!
THE most detailed, straight forward, up close and CLEAR tutorial I can find ANYWHERE!!!!! And the easiest to follow along!! and you don’t drag!!! AMAZING!! I’m a beginner and this is top tier teaching👌👌
Thank you so much Ruth, that is so appreciated.🥰🤗
For real!!
Totally agree!!
15:38 was such a, like... satisfying moment. Just "Crush it flat!" *thunk* was incredibly amusing and definitely sold me on this one in a weird way. I was already looking up yarns to maybe try this for a holiday present and now I absolutely have to.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 I enjoyed slapping it into submission LOL
Robin REALLY is the best teacher. Before her, I couldn't crochet at all. Unable to sleep one night during lockdown, I stayed up most of the night watching the intro videos. By morning I had a small pile of granny squares. Thank you, Robin!
I made the traditional sunflower colors using this pattern and gave it to my granddaughter for Christmas last year. Also made a 16" pillow with a sunflower and leaves in the middle and a bolster with sunflowers on each end. Then I made her a sunflower coaster set in a crocheted container for her birthday. This was very time consuming, but looked wonderful.
The sunflower colours were my daughters choice! I think its very trendy with the youngsters at the moment (and considering she has NEVER asked me for crochet before, I jumped on it 😅) Your bolsters sound beautiful! 🌻
How sweet! She will have all of those items to remind her of you and hopefully, make her smile each time. Blessings 🙏🏼
Oh wow! I bet it was adorable! How sweet and thoughtful ! That is definitely a keepsake
Photo please 🙏
@@claramiller5504 I gave it away last year and didn't take any pictures.
i’ve been desperately trying to do literally any granny square i could possibly find a tutorial for and this is the first one i’ve been able to do! i’m so excited! not only is it a granny square but it’s got the coolest design and it turned out exactly like in the video! i’m so happy thank you so so much!!
Great teacher. Thanks
Was worried that I wasn't interested in crafts any longer, but thought I might make a granny afghan for my Godson who recently got engaged. Went to UA-cam and found this pattern, bought the yarn and am happily making this lovely piece. The instructions are easy to understand and I am appreciative of the great instructions, thank you.
Thank you Barbara, I am so pleased to read you are back to crafts - sometimes we just need a break from creativity and that’s okay.🤗🧶
This tutorial is INCREDIBLE. I've been crocheting for about 2 years now and never worked up the courage to move beyond repetitive scarves until I found this pattern & this video... I was worried, but decided to give it a shot and OMG. NEVER have I watched a more helpful tutorial. I SO appreciate that you show every step carefully. You explain everything so clearly and kindly! And your voice is so lovely and calming!! I'm so glad I happened to stumble onto this as I venture into more complicated projects. Thank you thank you thank you!! So excited to make a complete blanket! You rock!!!
Awwh, honestly reading this made my day!🥰 Thank you so much for such kind words and enjoy making your blanket.😃 x
Not only are you a wonderful teacher but your voice and crocheting is so relaxing 😂
"higgledy-piggledy" 😆 One of my favorite words you don't hear everyday! You're THE BEST!! Thanks for all your hard work! Great tutorial!
It is the best word!😃😂 Thank you Angelina!x
That was a great tutorial.
The blue background is a perfect contrasting colour.
The chart of stitches over the work near the end is a good visual of the pattern
Well done 🇨🇦 ❤️
I’m a crochet beginner so this type of granny square appeared a bit challenging but you explained every step so clearly! I’m now confident in my ability to make this. Thank you thank you thank you!!
The diagram overlay for squaring off in the fourth round is SO helpful. Thanks!
My 17yo loves sunflowers and this would be the perfect blanket for me to make. Well, when I get the hang of crochet.
I’ve been crocheting for like 2 or 3 months now and have just been mind blown by how you do the starting circle, the idea of holding your starting end so it weaves it in for you on regular rounds, and the way you thread your needle. This was an amazing tutorial and I am so appreciative!
You are a very good explainer! I just crocheted for the first time and to have an entire square ready is super motivating. Thanks for the video!
I learned crocheting and knitting from my grandma and I don't know any of the names of the stitches in English, so I really appreciate that you always say the name and then show slowly how it's done, it's really easy to understand like that and I got the hang of the pattern so fast. Working on a blanket like this for my new living room now!
Having never been able to grasp crochet before, watching you has enabled me to start with the basic granny square very easily. Your tutorials are so easy and clear to follow. I have just watched the sunflower granny square and I cannot wait to advance to that. Thank you so much x

I have to say Ms. Robin you are by far the best crochet teacher I have come across. I recently picked up crocheting, I can do a few stitches but the Granny square is a whole different story. SO easy to follow! Thank you so much! I’m making a sunflower tote.

Made my friend a red, black, and white cardigan with the pattern she absolutely loves it!
Hi Robin another lovely pattern which you make a delight to follow. If I may ask you a crochet 🧶 question. I am going to buy some pure Arran wool from the sheep on the Island of Tiree in the Hebrides. Hand spun on the islands . I have order two 100 grms balls in either cream and brown or two cream. ( Haven’t decided yet ) What would be your recommendations for a beginner but getting much better! !!! Thank you Pamela
My only recommendation would be to use it for something special for yourself! Hand spun (and hand dyed) yarn is a weakness of mine, I love it! Aran is a good weight too - not too thin; not too thick 😍
How do I calculate how much yarn in each color to buy? I really want to start this project. It's so beautiful!
I was going to ask this!
@@RoseabzillaEm I ended up buying one skein in each color, making squares and estimating what I would need.
Thank you so much for this tutorial you are the best teacher ever . I needed a lot of granny squares to make a pillow and this helped me so much thank you for your effort and time ❤️❤️❤️
This is amazing! I love making this granny square! Thank you so much! 💜💜 🧶
Well then, I'll just have to make a cardigan now, about how big a square does this make with what size yarn and hook?🥰
My squares are approximately 5 inches using the chunky yarn and 6mm hook. I'm actually making a cardigan with the squares I show in the beginning and in the thumbnail! If you want slightly smaller squares for your cardigan you can use double knit yarn with a 4mm hook 😀
@@HookedbyRobin thanks! Hope you post the making of the cardigan, I'd love to see it 😍

Can't make a single complaint about this tutorial! Challenged myself to learn a new technique for my first project of 2022 and I'm already feeling really good about it after my first ever attempt went well thanks to your video! Easy to follow, very little confusion (I have math dyslexia so getting my stitch numbers right takes a while and is entirely on me), and you broke the video into chapters for each segment of the square.
Thank you Robin ❤️
What a lovely comment to read! Thank you so much - so glad the video helped you! x
You are a fabulous teacher Robin, and I couldn't believe how easy you made this look. I watched this on youtube on my television and then used my tablet to LIKE it and save to my Favourites list. I'm definitely going to watch the other link also. Thankyou so much for sharing your wonderful gift. By tbe way I absolutely loved watching you and your hubby LIVE a couple of months ago, and I really hope you do another one sometime in tbe future. You are breath of fresh air Robin. Big hugs from Jenny in Tasmania ❤
Beautiful!
oh WOW this was so easy to follow along, thank you sm for making this tutorial
This is one of the sunflower square tutorial I've watched. I've watched several others just for my square come out uneven and "wavy" because it was completely flat. I have no idea why in the tutorial theirs came out flat while mine didn't, i know i was following the directions accurately because i focused on every detail to make it perfect. All that trying discouraged me to stopping crochet for a month until i finally got the courage to come back at it and i found your video. This video not only helped me make a proper flat square it also gave me back the courage to pursue crochet. Thank you thank you thank you, your work is very much appreciated.
