    Found out after pulling my w126 evaporator out that mercedes NLA RHD w126 evaporators. I ended up paying a coil maker to manufacture one for half the price in copper for a 3rd of the price!

    Great point about using MB parts. I have a 1983 300D Turbo and I have been using my local Mercedes dealership for some repairs when I don’t have the skill or time etc. They have been extremely cooperative and knowledgeable.

    I've been hoarding w124 parts to hopefully keep my e500 on the road forever. It's shocking what is NLA on cars as new as W124. For example I just found the hard way that the later style front wheel speed sensors are currently NLA.

    I like every UA-cam you record! They are interesting and very helpful. I recently retired and bought a 220d w115 1973. I planned to do minor things like replacing shocks, fluids and seals around doors. The interior and exterior are immaculate but it wasn’t run by the widow for the past 10-15 years. After much research I found a tear in the governor diaphragm at the rear of the fuel injection punch. Fortunately I found the part in Germany and based on my reading,etc I hope this to be the woe to many of the issues I was having before the idol ran away and I could no longer drive it. Again thanks for what you take the time to do for us lovers of these classic beast.

    Nice discussion. I assume I can always find a part somewhere, but get worried every once in a while, like looking for the tiny squiggle springs on the door lock rod to the button on my '85 410K w123. The vacuum actuators were not a problem - yet.

    This content was great thank you. Literally yesterday I was talking with my wife about this because of an AC Blower Resistor that I bought two of by mistake. I'm going to just keep the extra because I own a CLK 320 and parts are not as common as for the E Class

    I came from a air cooled vw classic background and was hoping the same availability with my w126 as far as parts and customization that can be done. Maybe classic MBZ can have the same fanfare and parts both stock and aftermarket like air cooled classic VW’s?

    Great topic. I’ve had good luck with Millers in Az and “Mr.Lock” for keys. So true about anything post 1972. Easier to get parts for my ‘57 220s and ‘68 280SE than it is for my ‘93 600.

    Try finding rubber for door and window seals on a 500/560 SEC. Impossible. :-( That's the definition of parts obsolescence sadness. Because of that I purchased a moonroof gasket while the getting was good. I have other parts I am in the process of purchasing, just in case.

    I want to encourage everyone to seriously consider becoming a Patreon member! Pierre's videos are so valuable for all of us! I recently became a $10/month subscriber! Pierre, I have three W124's..(94 E320 cabriolet, a 94 E320 wagon, and a 93 300 CE)...do you have a list of specific important, essential parts for different series vehicles that we can focus on to start to collect before they are needed?

    W123 heater cores are NLA and have been since ‘09. 124 cores fit almost exactly. You just need to make a small cut in the plastic housing of your HVAC assembly!

    Seriously though om60x glow plug controller is getting pretty thin out there. Luckily mine was a loose hot lead that melted the plastic creating the an insulator and once I cleaned it up it works perfect but they are getting harder to find.

    Have a few old MBs I drive daily and it’s been a massive challenge of late to keep on the road as daily drivers. Hi pressure steering hose on 124 wagon, NLA. Had “re-built” by two shops specializing in hydraulic lines…failed. Had to buy off of a parts car on line. Who knows how long that will last. AC line (NLA) and mono valve for my 107 (crappy ones on the market)…challenges. Have had both cars since new. Keeping an eye out for pets cars to just put in the barn to keep these cars on the road.

    I have gone a little mad collecting bits for my W109. The Airsuspension system worries me so I have spare set of bellows and levelling valves, many relays (but they never fail anyway), sliding joint, axle bearing and other things. I think the USA and Europe have ample supplies at this time but in 20 years, who knows. Nice thought provoking Video Pierre. Thanks

    I have found that it pays to check with multiple dealers when one says the part is not available. Some parts people dig deeper. That was the case in finding a new W116 radiator.

    The fuel pump for w113 is nla new. Or for instance the pressure plate for a 250sl . These are crucial parts for a car . It’s not a rubber seal or a belt .

    • @Chuckyd26
      @Chuckyd26 2 роки тому

      The fuel pumps are rebuildable, or a more modern Bosch pump can he adapted. The pressure plate is the same as on the Fintail 6 cyl models and early W108 models, shouldn't be that hard to find a good used one. Good luck!

    I think older Mercedes still have better parts availability than most cars. The fact that Mercedes and third parties still offer new parts, sometimes even improved, is an exception to what you see with other brands. I know I can buy new seals, lenses and mouldings for my w123 but not for my camry despite being is much newer and being sold in larger numbers. And the newer the car, the worse, so Mercedes owners should consider ourselves fortunate for having access to such good supply and should keep on demanding parts to preserve that advantage.

  • @Hedonistic0Frog

    Not really a classic yet but on W220 chassis, the soft close door vacuum chamber cracks and leaks all the time. I did quite a few so I got it down to an hour and a half to get it out, epoxy it to seal it closed again, and then put it back in. I'll always prefer fixing the components that break if possible over swapping in new parts. It saves on a lot of waste from throwing away old parts and manufacturing new ones. The W126 chassis is still my favorite though, you can't beat those spring loaded seats and ease of maintenance.

    • @gregsn2u
      @gregsn2u 2 роки тому +2

      There are definite problems with the 140 and if this is your first MB , you’ll never buy another MB. However,that being said, it is an awesome car. The cost of ownership is in maintenance
      And patience. Th modules are impossible,expensive and not always available. Try getting a key for a ‘93. Replacing the evaporator is 30 hours in labor. Don’t even get started on the wiring harnesses and the finicky nature of the computers. I know when my 600 is running just fine-the cluster shows at least one warning notice. If I see none, I get suspicious. But when the ride is right, nothing compares.

    • @Mr_CJ_rambo
      @Mr_CJ_rambo 2 роки тому +1

      @@gregsn2u everything you said are facts except the part about not buying another MB if the 140 is someone's first. The w140 has an addictive feel, I think most people buy more MBs after experiencing the w140

  • @dasautoshoppe6932
    @dasautoshoppe6932 2 роки тому +1

    I like the example you use regarding the W123 steering wheel. Unfortunately, Mercedes considers parts for the classics a thorn in their side. They just don't want to deal with it. Mercedes also knows that if they were to make another batch of w123 steering wheels that most, (not all) of W123 owners will not pay the price Mercedes would want for a new W123 steering wheel. So Mercedes would end up having a large number of steering wheels on the shelf that'll never sell. A good example of this is the black and ivory steering wheel for the 1968-1972 W108, W109, W100, W113, and W114/W115 cars. The demand is already there, and has been for about a year now...... but Mercedes has refused to make anymore because they know that people will expect to pay only $400-$500 for a part that Mercedes will want $1,000 or more for. If Mercedes can't work with the realistic expectations from their buyers, then there isn't much hope.

      I get the same attitude from Mercedes while trying to restore my 61 ponton. The MB classic website is full of wonderful exaltations of pride in keeping the older cars on the road but when I call them up all I get is,"Yep, that part is not available. It sucks to be you."
