  • Just putting it out there, the Willys must be one of the most underrated 80s rock bands out there. With the legendary Shawn Lane dropping world ending solos on each track, their sound was perfect for the time.
In this video we've compiled a load of Shawn Lane solos from his time with the Willys, this includes original songs and cover songs. At the perky age of 25 it was abundantly clear that Shawn had talen well beyond his years, even to this day hearing these solos it's a struggle to see who could have matched it.

I’m a Memphis guitar player. I met Shawn in the early 80’s when he was playing with The Willys. Russ, the drummer lived a couple of houses down and our kids were friends. So I saw the band play often, talked with Shawn a few times. He was a kind, humble and gentle soul.

I knew Shawn pretty well. More than most i would venture to say. Spent many ( although not as many as i would have liked) nights at his house playing, discussing, exploring guitar. He was the smartest person i have ever known. And i am pretty smart ! And know a lot of people who are highly intelligent. But not like Shawn. This dudes brain was "other worldly" to say the least. I could tell you some amazing stories but i wont drone on. I miss our conversations. I was at NAMM when Vigiere ( sp?) gave him a fretless guitar. I took him to his hotel room to get ready to play with Stanley Jordan. He never touched the fretless guitar. I played it for 2 hours while he got ready. He walked onstage and played it like he had owned it his whole life. It was incredible to witness. I feel very blessed to have known Shawn. The kindest , humblest soul you can imagine. Shawn , i love you man , and cant wait to see you again one day. The absolute GOAT !

Shawn Lane is one of the best kept secret of the guitar world, i can't understand how this guy wasn't bigger in the 90s and early 2003, his playing is truly one of a kind. This channel is doing an amazing work on putting Shawn Lane in the map for people like me who otherwise would never knew him.

Gone 20 years this year, and the world is yet to catch up with Shawn's magnificence. A once-in-a-lifetime player, he had few peers then, and few now: the GOAT.

Was Shawn trying to Catch up with Alan Holdsworth, who still is one of the most influential players to this day after his death in 2017
There is also Matteo Mancuso (26) who shreds with just his fingers(no pick)
Then add Guthrie Govan who improvises his shreds
I have never like the term
      “The best”
I prefer it’s just another guitarist to add to the list of talented players to listen too
      No one is the best
      They are all the best

I've been playing for more than 30 years and have taught hundreds of students. What you're hearing here is just pure God-given talent that only very few are born with. I am very, very good at guitar, but all the practice in the world wouldn't make me as good as this. Believe me, I've tried 🤣🤘🏼🔥

Guthrie Govan comes to my mind, not only does he shred and he improvises that shred.

      He is not that unique
Their are a lot of shredders that can play like this
He is just another talented player to add to the listening list
Drop the “the best player” title and see it as just another “fantastic player who inspires”

Try Alan Holdsworth, a player who was to Rock for Jazz and to Jazz for Rock.
He had absolutely huge hands and not only like Shawn, 20 fingers on his fret hand, a finger stretch between frets that would make most guitarists dislocate their fingers.
Alan’s grasp on scales we’re instinct to him
      (This is from Wikipedia)
Holdsworth's playing style combined elements of jazz and progressive rock, and drew upon scale forms often derived from those such as the lydian, harmonic major, diminished, augmented, whole tone, chromatic and altered scales.
In his instructional video for example he mentioned that he often played altered scales that are unusual to the average player, such as F minor major 7th with a raised 4th, while also displaying an ability to recognize such complex scales in chord form with voicings up and down the neck, with each note being a member of a family.
Both Alan and Shawn are simply guitarists who just make you think
“what the F**k, how the hell did they do that, hang on a second did I just hear that (rewind a few dozen times) they must have extra fingers and that’s it I’m giving up trying to play this, I’ll get a severe case R.S.I trying to play that”
There are so many shredders out there
It’s just another to add to the list to listen to
      Then there is Matteo Mancuso
      (Lifted from Wikipedia again)
Mancuso has developed a unique finger style technique: at times he uses his picking hand like Wes Montgomery and he switches to using a rest stroke with his index finger and middle finger to pick the strings like a classical guitar player.
It is a unique finger-style right hand technique.
Mancuso is followed by a large international audience on the internet.
He has been called a virtuoso on the guitar.
      He shreds with no pick
I’m glad I play drums, after watching and listening to Alan, Shawn and Matteo
I would of given up trying to play guitar
