I noticed a couple of spots of oil on my driveway when I moved my Ford Transit Mk7 Campervan, when I took a look underneath I could see that there was an oil leak dripping that seemed to be coming from between the oil cooler block and the oil filter housing. It wasn’t very much but I knew I would have to do something about it before it got any worse.

Previously I had an issue with a very similar oil cooler on a Ford Fiesta TDCI, only in that case something went wrong inside it and the oil and coolant mixed together. I thought it was the head gasket at first. Cleaning the oil out of the cooling system took a long time, luckily the engine hadn’t been run much with coolant in the oil and after the repair did 10’s of thousands of miles more before being retired. I didn’t want this to happen to the Ford van.
At first I was intending to replace the seal between the cooler and the housing. But I couldn’t find an OEM oil seal and aftermarket seals ones were about 30% of the cost of a full replacement oil filter housing with new oil cooler. Having had the previous bad experience with one of these oil coolers I decided to replace the whole unit for a new one. It struck me that there are so many of these available from different suppliers that they must fail regularly. I found out there there is an upgraded oil cooler and filter housing which is what I bought.
I am not sure what else is upgraded but the things I noticed were; the seal on the block is now a rubber seal rather than a gasket; instead of a cartridge the oil filter is now a canister type; and the actual cooler unit seems a little bigger.
When I came to do the job I found that the leak had got considerably worse with a puddle of oil forming underneath. I was pleased that I had decided to take action and not just live with what was a slight oil leak.
The job itself is quite easy. I was a little concerned about breaking one of the mounting bolts, but that turned out not to be an issue. Maybe because I did take the trouble to warm the engine through then cool the ends of the bolts and loosen them before starting the job.
Steel bolts into alloy blocks have caused me a problem in the past so I am always concerned when removing this kind of assembly. It only takes one broken bolt to make a simple job a real problem.
I torqued the mounting bolts up to 18 nm which is probably a little on the light side, but I will keep an eye on it. I have seen too many threads in engine blocks damaged by people thinking just a little tweak more!
Once I had replaced the filter housing I put in fresh oil, 6.2 litres and used red coolant, the spec is 10 litres, but it only took around 8. This isn’t unusual as there are lots of areas in the radiators and block where the coolant will stay. The coolant didn't look like it had been in so long, so I didn’t bother flushing the cooling system through.

Thank you for the excellent video. Will be having a go at mine today, but the oil is in the cooling system, so a fair bit of cleaning that as well.
It is a nuisance to get all of the oil out. But with a bit of patience and the odd dash of Fairy it can be done. Good luck.

After watching this video which is excellent, I did the full service and found it very easy, due to the excellent commentary! I took my time and in all, the full service took me 2 hours! Saved myself a fortune!

It is quite clear to me and the experienced Mechanic I showed the Oil Filter to, after I had to Smash the old one off because it was not done at the last, so called Garage full Service, costing a fortune, that they had not changed it! The mechanic said that it was Solid and at least 3 years old! Can I ask? Where does the inner Spring belong? If you require, I will forward you a photo!!
@@stephensimpkins8622 I'm not sure what spring it would be. Perhaps it is part of an oil pressure relief valve that may be built into the oil filter housing. I would recommend searching Transit forums looking for your specific model. I would think though that the spring went in below the filer, but there may be other parts to it like a washer or a disk. Sorry I can't be more helpful, I haven't seen one with a spring.

Cool, thanks. Sometimes a fault in the oil cooler can give a lot of symptoms that look like head gasket failure. I would definately look at it first. Godd luck.
@@SPANNERRASH I also performed a test with a HEAD GASKET LEAK TESTER with color-changing liquid.
The fluid in the tester did not change color, which means it is OK.
I only replaced the oil cooler
- fact ! the seals were also hard and flat.
NOW THE CAR HAS TO BE DRIVED, EVEN THOUGH THE SYSTEM HAS BEEN FLUSHED 3 TIMES, IT IS NOT SO EASY TO CLEAN IT. I will keep an eye on it, maybe it will be necessary to replace the whole thing as in the video.

It's a bit messy when it has leaked intot he coolant, but it is basically the same job, just a little more cleaning.

I've got a few hints to share myself if need be with the issues I've had with mine, I've got a low mileage transit sport, and I noticed it had an oil leak around the oil cooler area. I replaced the pan last year as it was pretty bubbled with rust so I wondered if I'd not sealed it properly

Thanks for a great video. Could I ask you a question please? I have a 2012 transit (same model) and the coolant reservoir is always pressurised once I drive the van. It seems to be driving fine but I’ve noticed anytime I twist off the coolant cap there’s a release of pressure. Is this normal as it’s an expansion tank or should the pressure release itself when the van is off and cold ? Thank you 😊
The radiator cap should keep the radiator pressurised when the engine warms up. If the pressure you are talking about is only slight when cold, and the the engine temp seems to be fine when running, then I personally wouldn't worry about it. If it is causing you concern, try a new cap first, I think that when cold the cap should release all pressure, but aren't quite as good as this when they get old. Hope this helps.

Do you know what sensor that is? Mine is leaking from there by the looks of it. Reckon I just need to tighten it up or will I need to replace it?
If it's the latter, do I need to drain the coolant or just the oil?
Judging from where it is I am sure it is the oil pressure switch. They are know to leak and are quite cheap. I am pretty sure you only need to drop the oil but I suspect that you can get away with just quickly swapping the sensor without draining the oil. I would do that unless an oil change was needed. My question is do we have to have this extra item or can you pay pass this oil cooler
I would suspect that it would be hard to bypass, especially as it has the oil filter built into the same unit. I wouldn't like to do with out a filter.
Bypass just water going in and out. Not the whole oil cooler
Do you need to fill the filter with oil before fitting the new cooler?
Filling filters with oil seems to be a pretty modern idea to me. In reallity the filter will fill as you are cranking the engine, and some filters are at an angle where most of the oil would come out before you had full screwed it home. So I don't think it is necessary.
I have annoying leakage just above all these on my ford transit, middle of the front.
Hopefully just something simple like the rocker cover gasket. Hope you can solve it!

hey buddy i know its not good form but out of desperation wondered if i could ask your advice ,my mk7 has a big cooling issue ,system is pressurising and when i use a sniff test theres bubbles a plenty ,i dont mind it being a hg / crack issue but dont want to do that immense job if its not the problem ,is it possible that a blockage or air draw could cause it or would you advise its defo the hg ,thanks in advance
If there is extra gas and pressure in the coolant system it has to be coming from somewhere that creates gas and makes pressure. I can't think of anything that would be doing both of those things that isn't related to the combustion chamber(s) so I think your first diagnoses is very likely to be correct. You could spend a lot of time trying to investigate other things, but in my experience that frequently turns out to be wishful thinking. Sorry I can't be more helpful. Good luck with fixing it.

Arr I asked the man in the car spares shop if I could swap to this style of oil cooler and he said no. Anyway seen this video just in time and ebay had a offer on 20%off plus I had a watch on one and the seller offered 5%off so picked one up for £35

Hi, yes the filter is included. I included the link for the cabin filter because I changed it at the same time. You don't need it for the oil cooler change. I hope the makes sense.

I noticed I have another question. I see how you loose the first water hose, as it has an screw, but I dont see how you do the other one, that particulary has another system and there's no screw. There a speciall tecnic? or you just wiggleled the tube and took it out directly?
@@marcelrchav92 if it hasn't got a screw it might be one of the crimp style clamps. If so there is probably a section that is raised up with the sides crimped in, if so a flat headed screwdriver in the middle of the crimped section will usually loosen it. You will have to replace it with a more standard jubilee clip when you put it back. Good luck.
