  • Battersea Power Station Is Europe’s Biggest Brick Building, Those Four Iconic Chimneys Puffed Their Last Smoke In 1983, And For Decades It Lay Abandoned With Potential Investors Unsure What To Do With The
    42-Acre Site.
Battersea Power Station Short History And 9 BILLION Restoration
Well on the 14th October 2022, it opened it’s doors for the very first time. Restoration was a herculean project that took ten years to complete and a staggering 9 Billion in costs.
During that 10-year project, the four famous white chimneys looming over the River Thames have been dismantled and rebuilt, due to the corrosion of their steel structures.
The power station's distinctive brickwork has, where necessary, been meticulously recreated. Two firms that made bricks for the original building were called on to supply 1.75 million matching replacements.
The roof of the building, also had to be replaced. It was removed by a previous owner as part of a doomed project to turn the power station into a theme park.
More than three times the quantity of steel used to construct the Eiffel Tower has been used in the rebuild
Battersea Power station now has 254 apartments, as well as restaurants, bars, offices and shops. Not to mention that incredible attraction - Lift 109, where you can ascend one of those iconic Battersea Power Station chimneys in a glass elevator and take in 360 degree views of London.
Luxury apartments line both flanks of the main building. They start at £865,000 for a studio, there are also 18 sky villas - three- and four-bed penthouses with private terraces arranged around a communal roof garden on top of the building - these cost a staggering £7m to buy.
Battersea Power Station is a decommissioned Grade II* listed coal-fired power station, located on the south bank of the River Thames, in Nine Elms, Battersea, in the London Borough of Wandsworth. It was built by the London Power Company to the design of Leonard Pearce, The station is one of the world's largest brick buildings and notable for its original, Art Deco interior fittings and decor.
The building comprises two power stations, built in two stages, in a single building. Battersea A Power Station was built between 1929 and 1935 and Battersea B Power Station, to its east, between 1937 and 1941, when construction was paused owing to the worsening effects of the Second World War. The building was completed in 1955. "Battersea B" was built to a design nearly identical to that of "Battersea A", creating the iconic four-chimney structure.
Battersea Power station was also a big target for Nazi Germany during ww2, as the power station provided most of the Electricity during it’s operation, by knocking this out, it would have caused huge damage - After the failure of the Battle of Britain, the Germans attempted to bomb London into submission.
In September 1940, the Luftwaffe unleashed a merciless bombing campaign and London received the brunt of the initial attacks, being bombed for 57 consecutive days at the start of the onslaught.
But, instead of breaking morale, the raids galvanised the will of the British people for the rest of the war.
Battersea Power station survived the blitz of London, and is today an iconic landmark - It is now a place we can all visit, enjoy and shop till your hearts content.

Wow, taking down the huge chimneys and re-building them sounds like a herculean task! I'm really glad this iconic building has been preserved. Ooh, I might see if I can buy my second home in the building, lol! This was a very interesting video, Stephen and Yhana. Thank you Julie and Lucy, what they have done with this building is certainly amazing. Although the cost is hard to fathom. Perhaps the cost increased due to them needing to recreate things like those chimneys. I wonder how much each one cost?

I’m pleased they restored this too, they could have easily knocked it down, Battersea Power Station is one of those London iconic sites, although not one seen by many visitors as it’s a bit of a distance from the usual tourist areas. I think this renovation will change all that, it will bring in new businesses and money into this area too. I can imagine those apartments look incredible inside 😊

Would have loved to have seen a theme park there though. We definitely need to do the lift, might just get ourselves a city pad, only £7m....might get two!!! I don't think we've ever actually been inside it, might have to take a visit next time we head down that way. Great video, really enjoyed that!! Top work both x

Amazing though to live in one of the apartments or penthouses with the 360 views you can get up there and the communal roof on top of the building and it
amazing that though it was a target for Nazi Germany , it survived the London blitz. That was brilliant 👏 ~ Anna 👍
